I've been making backups with DVD+r media (maxell, sony, fugi); and on my xbox I have no problems playing any of the backups. But on my Sony DVD player (DVW 7000) the movies sometimes freeze then continue after a few seconds or stop entirely. The xbox is one of the newer models so I figured maybe the firmware on the sony is older. Is it possible to update the firmware on a stand alone player? If so where do I get the update/how do I install?

Some manufacturers, I know Philips does, have websites with support. I recently upgraded my Philips firmware with a download. The website supplied the instructions on the "how to". So, check with Sony and see what's available.

The -R may solve the problem, lets hope. I know some of the earlier PS2s won't play +Rs at all. Usually though, if a player is set only for -R, the player won't play +R at all. Sometimes just the difference in the manufacturer or media speed can make a difference to the firmware on older players.

What brand dvd burner do you have? You may be able to booktype your +r media dvd-rom thus greatly improving the compatability with your set-top player.
