someone please help
i recently bought a 50 pack of memorex 8x dvd+r discs. now when i would go to burn a movie i would get all these errors. i read up a little and found out that i may have to upgrade my burner software to be able to burn 8x discs. i checked the discs i was using before and noticed that they were 4x. i had a 100pack of those and never had a problem.

but i could not upgrade firmware or whatever i couldnt find the update. then someone told me i could use a hex editor (which i have) to change my drive to a benQ. but that would void my warranty.
i have a burner that came with my dell computer.
(Philips DVD+RW DVD8601) i got this program called booktype management v8.4 that i tried to use and i'm guessing thats what made this thing work but i could be wrong.

i used it and i finally burnt a 8x disc. but it took about an hour and some change. i put it in my dvd player and it appeared to work the main menu screen would come up and i could go into scene selection and all that but when i actually press play(either from main menu or if i choose a scene) it would not play it sounds like the player is searching or something. and on the bottom of the disc it looks likes it is in layers or something. it never did that on my old discs.

does anybody know what i can do?
by the way the times when it did burn i would have to set the burn speed for 8x. instead of max. i did a total of 4 discs and i get the same problem with all 4 cant get passed that main menu.

anyhelp would be appreciated. sorry if it's too long

hi ceo and welcome to AD~

don't worry your post is not even close to being "too long"...you can check out some of mine that fill like 1/2 the page~ :P

anyways, this is your problem :
Quote:

memorex are regarded as some of the MOST problematic blanks to use for backing up movies on dvd-r/dvd+r

seems like for the most part you have your burner issues taken care of and from your problem, all i can see is that MEDIA is the issue~ :P

check my sig. for MY personal recommendations, you will have MUCH better success with standalone playback if you use better media~ hope that is a good start for you, let us know once you try some Taiyo Yudens or Verbatim media, or Maxell or Ritek even, just please stay away from the Memorex, im GUESSING that the media coding on those discs you have are CMC MAG..which i've stated a hundred times or more on AfterDawn, SUCK. CMC MAG=crappola~ :P

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

thank you! that has to be one of the fastest replys. i actually thought memorex was a good brand just because i see so many people with them. but thats with music cd's though. i guess i wasted my money on these things. any suggestions on what i can use them for besides coasters? i have a feeling you are just gonna say to chuck em in the garbage.

do you own a gun? you can use them for skeet shooting or target practice, i dumped 90% of ALL my memorex in the trash years ago, but still keep a 15pk spindle for coaster use on my dining room table~ :)
i even had my wife draw some pretty designs on the tops to make them "match" with my table~ lol :P

anyways, i just happen to come on and noticed your problem, so i responded immediately in hopes of helping you before things became worse for you and you became more frustrated~ :)

good luck with your new media...try TYs or Verbatim~ they work great for me~

sorry i forgot to ask a few questions before.

1. do u know why it was burnt with different layers? my burner never did that before.

2. should i only get 4x discs?

also i tried to copy one back to the computer so i could re-try to burn it and i got errors with decrypter trying to read the disc.

kivory666 - thanks for all your help

that is definitely expected when you try to re-read/encode a movie from a "bad media" disc~ happens quite frequently and a lot of times, it's nearly impossible to re-rip from the bad burned disc and put on a GOOD disc~

well, about the "layers" thing, i'm not completely sure what you mean? do you mean the noticeable "rings/lines" that the laser embedded onto the bottom (dye side) of your blank dvd disc? that is normal to some degree, if the rings are crooked or uneven, it's most likely because the dye quality is sub par, that is not the burner's fault, that is the problematic media's bad dye fault :)

i've read a LOT of bad things about Philips burners in general, especially the ones that Dell put into their systems...while i have NO experience with Philips burner (your particular model or any other models), if you have never had problems with 100 backups so far with your burner, then it should be ok~ you don't have to ONLY buy 4x blanks as if you were able to burn @8x like you stated earlier, then it should be ok~ if that burner is capable, you can burn @ 8x ALL day LONG on good TY or Verbatim media with flawless playback~ :)

just make sure the firmware is up to date. secondly, 4x speed media is becoming MORE and MORE obsolete nowadays as 8x rated media is becoming the "norm" now as become the new standard~ i have thousands of 4x dvd-r TYG01s and have had no problems with them, so the difference in quality between different speeds is negligent, what IS important is the difference in quality between different MANUFACTURERS...not all dvd-media is created equally~ that is why i suggest getting some GOOD media to make your backups~

hope that clarifies a bit~ if not, i'll help you with any more questions you might have~

Hi ceo2123,

My buddy kivory pretty much summed up all the problems associated with memorsux media. One reason your first batch of memorex's worked could be because memorex buys their media from several different manufactures but mainly CMC Magnetics which is the worst manufacturer there is period. Pure junk. Your first batch could have been made by ricohjpn (which is fairly good media) or ritek (which is also descent budget media).

I have also read of some problems associated with the phillips dvdrw's that come with Dell systems. Phillips and benq are made by the same company and I love my benq. Maybe you can crossflash it with some benq firmware. Here's a good forum that specializes in different brands of burners. http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=92 Maybe you can get some info and insight on what can be done to yours. I also use the booktype utility manager to booktype all my +r media to dvd-rom.

As a rule of thumb it is generally recommended that you keep your vidio file burns to 4x or under to insure less chances of write errors. As media and burner technology improve we are able to burn at faster speeds and more are doing so but untill you get some good high quality, proven media and other problems resolved I would suggest burning at 4x or under.

..yup, i've only recently taken the plunge to 8x burning, now that my setup can sustain it (but not exclusively, i still prefer to keep to 4x). Had stuck to 4x for a long time, even after using quality 8x Verbatim for quite a while it took me ages to do some 8x testing. Plus my recently purchased TY 8x discs burn just nicely at 8x too.

I would have said check the links in my sig re crap media, but the guys have explained it already (though feel free to look at th threads, then you can pass the word so others don't get visits from the bad disc fairy :)
