I am not computer savvy. I just purchased an external dvd r/rw from ebay to use on my ibm laptop which uses windows 2000. I get a message saying I cannot play movies without a decoder. I tried to download media player classic from this site but now I dont know which program to use to open it. Do I just plug in the player to view a movie?

Why in the world would you purchase a product that you do not know how to use? (especially second hand crap from Ebay).

You need appropriate Codecs on your system for playback (e.g DivX9). MPC should have these but you really need a player such as PowerDVD or WinDVD on your system.

Think you need to read some guides using the Guides tab at the top of this page.

Yes...
most video cards come with DVD decoders built in and with software decoders (winDVD and PowerDVD). If you can get one of these programs for your laptop, it should play DVD's on your external drive. However, some may not recognize drives on USB. Look into some software manufacture forums to be sure of what you are buying before committing to one.
