I'm sure this has been discussed before, so hopefully you guys aren't bored to tears by it. I'm sick of DVDs that are scratched all up and cause my DVD player to restart the movie at chapter 1 again (usually seems to happen 1/2 way through. I'd rather spend a few minutes before hand, cleaning or polishing, than having to search my way through the movie to find where I was.
Does anyone know of a surefire way to fix these scratches/imperfections. Any recommended products that truly work?

Quote:How to clean the disc with toothpaste:
Yep, just put a small dob directly onto the scratch, use the traditional white variety not the clear gell type. I then use a soft tissue wipe gently in only a radial direction (a straight line between the hub and the rim). Since the data is arranged circularly on the disc, the micro scratches you create when cleaning the disc (or the nasty gouge you make with the dirt you didn't see on your cleaning cloth) will cross more error correction blocks and be less likely to cause unrecoverable errors.
If you continue to have problems after cleaning the disc, you may need to attempt to repair one or more scratches. Sometimes even hairline scratches can cause errors if they just happen to cover an entire error correction (ECC) block. Examine the disc to find scratches, keeping in mind that the laser reads from the bottom.
There are essentially two methods of repairing scratches:
Fill or coat the scratch with an optical material.
Polish down the scratch.
There are many commercial products that do one or both of these, or you may wish to do it yourself with polishing compounds or toothpaste. The trick is to polish out the scratch without causing new ones. A mess of small polishing scratches may cause more damage than a big scratch. As with cleaning, polish only in the radial direction

Quote:The "Magic cleaning" technique: Try cleaning your DVD discs. Yea, I know they're new and clean but do it anyway. Do it a few seconds before inserting it into your DVD tray, use a disc cleaner, eyeglass cleaning solution or 99% Isopropyl Alcohol and a soft cotton cloth and rub-a-dub, dub. As soon as you're finished, "Pop" it into your DVD tray and fire up your program. You would be surprised how many times your disc is now "seen" and works like a "Bad Dog".
Dear Ribbit
What more can I say but to Echo the Profound and Prodigous Scuba Pete ! he is a person of wit knowledge and wisdom , Not to mention being funny on occasion ! Though he is right cleaning your original dvd before trying t o backup/copy it often will me the differene between sucsess and failure ! And no in all honesty it will not work every time or always but it is a good thing anyways as Martha Stewart would say as clean disc especially rentals movies don't track extra debris/crud /dustbunnies/ funk and any other word you can think of to descibe dirt into your burner or burners! and a clean burner is a happy burner! The addition I would make to the advice The Illustrious Mr. Scuba pete has given us is to but a Buy a Radial DVD/CD cleaner ! they are fairly inexpensive and last for eons if not abused! they range in price from about $5.00 @ big lots stores if they have tmen still to the $30.00 ish range for the disc Dr./skip/dr. et al . My own is made by SCOTCH and if I recollet it cost me $12.00 several years ago at wally world ? they are easy to use. You place the DVD/CD media on the turntable of the device centering it with the read side facing up - then spray the read surface with 91-99 percent isoppropyl alcohol a little bit goe along way but generaly cover the whole disc area the close the cleaner cover and turn the crank about 30-45 seconds or for a amount you feel is sufficient ! open the cleaner cover and remove your DVD/Cd holding it by the outside edges/rim so as not to smudge your freshly cleaned media open your dvd-rom /player drive and insert the dvd read side down - then commence to play your movie or back it up using software such as DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink or whichever program you prefer that does the function you desire! hope that this was somewhat helpful to you and Good Luck with your future burning adventures ! Ps# 1 Memorex makes a motorized dvd/cs cleaner but I have'nt used it -looks like a portable cd player ! and it cost about 30.00 dollars US -Fyi! again good luck happy burning & peace
