Thats really a matter of personal preferance and I'm sure you will get a lot of different answers. If your memorex was a 16x dvdrw then it was a rebadged lite-on. The new pacific digital's and sony's are also rebadged lite-ons. Although I have a litey I don't consider it the best burner. Liteys are very fast rippers and work well for scanning your burns, but are a bit finicky about what media they like. I would put plextor and benq up front. It really boils down to what you want to do with your burner. You can booktype dvd+r media to dvd-rom with liteys, rebadged liteys, benq, plextors (I read they were going to discontinue this feature) and nec's (with some modified f/w). I've read pioneer's perform well with dvd-r. Newegg has the best prices for dvdrw's that I know of and is where I've gotten all my drives. http://www.newegg.com/index.asp?DEPA=0 You might look here for some more preferances, pros and cons. http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=61 Hope this helps.

I have a Lite on and a Pioneer - I wouldn't hestitate to buy either one again. Just my 2 cents.
Check out this link on dvd burners - it should help with your decision:

Of my two drives, I prefer the benq over the litey for burning but like I stated previously, the litey is a faster ripper and works better for scans. If I was buying another one it would be a benq or plextor. If buying from a local store, you could open and look at the I/O as some are made by phillips/benq. Either lite-on or I/O should be a good drive. I've read good things about the lite-on SOHW-1673S and SOHW-1693S. Stay away from the SOHW-1633S since they were the first of the 16xx series and had a few bugs. I am not a pioneer fan primarily because I bitset all my +r media and pioneer is not capable of doing this. I read a review where the new memorex 16x burner got top mention (PC Magazine I think).

I don't know either but glad to hear it. Just out of curiosity what model is your drive?

Try the above link. They give very good review of the latest DVD Burners. Myself, I bought the new Memorex DVD16+/-DL4RWlD2 which is a rebaged Liteon 1673S. So far, I am happy with the drive.

That is the same drive I read about that got top mention in that review. One nice thing, since it's a rebadged litey you should be able to use the tools used with litey drives such as kprobe and booktype utility.

Booktype works nicely. Have not tried Kprobe. So far, I am entirely satisfied with the drive. I just wish memorex would post a firmware update. The firmware that shipped w/ mine is not the latest (based on the CDfreaks review) and the lates is not posted for DL yet.
