from what you wrote about your backups it sounds as though you burn the .mds file and iso to the disc
you should just use the mds file to burn the iso, if you did this then fine
swap magic will boot the discs, but you need a tool to open the drive, ie a slide card or a fliptop.
slide card is cheaper, i think ive seen them for £1.49 in the UK or you can make your own, I got my fliptop for £9.99 but it is much easier to use, but obviously you have some work to do to get it on

cheapest and easiest would be the slide card and swap magic, bear in mind you HAVE to buy swap magic you cannot download it, as we discussed this would be a backup dvd and the ps2 doesnt read backups as standard
