I have to agree with him but... alot of hardcore final fantasy fans wouldn't want a graphics upgrade... I know I personally love the old graphics which made Final Fantasy 7 the game it was... But I wouldn't mind a remake either.

Marketing and financial analysts exist for a reason. There is one big reason you will never see a remake of any of these games: it is not in the company's best interest.

Why? Ask them.

You know, at first I disagreed with Alathon, then I thought about what he said : if they're not making another FF7, it's probably for some good financial reasons.

Let's say this : Square isn't a company that prides itself solely on creating beautiful games, they also invest in anything that could make them money.

Anyone remember Drakengard? How about Unlimited Saga? What about FFX-2?

Their thing seems to be to release anything, so long as it looks like they could make money off of it. Sometimes it looks like they'll put out anything because they KNOW people will buy games with "Square" or "Square Enix" on it.

Also, if they truly cared about what their hardcore fans thought, they probably would have done a better job with the PC versions of FF7 and FF8, rather than handing down the entire projects to third parties. And to add insult to injury, after an initial poor launch and review of the PC ports, they pretty much HALTED all of it's production. Try looking up FF7/FF8 for PC on eBay, the prices are ridiculous. It's actually cheaper and easier to buy the PS version of the game, and emulating it with ePSXe (or the emu of your choice).

FF7 runs for $15-$20 for a used copy at EBGames/Gamestop, but that's still cheaper than any PC version you can find out there.

Anyways, to give the company their due : It's probably for the best that they don't release any of the older FF games in the future. The criticism on any of the games would be absolutely scathing. And I have a theory to support it : When FF7 came out, there wasn't really a standard for RPGs on the PSX. FF7 was a massive improvement over FF3 in a LOT of ways, and the advertising job done in the states for the game was pretty extensive. Besides that, critics embraced the game wholeheartedly, and its quality was unheard of at the time, for any game of ANY genre. Back when this game came out, they were still making games which you could fully enjoy WITHOUT memory cards.

Anyways, the FF series is usually the first MEMORABLE starting point in RPG games for all players, and the themes and issues presented in FF7 were those that a lot of teenagers could identify with. Not only that, but it had a strong presentation, and a very lingering presence. It was a catchy game, and then it could also be a very traditional RPG.

All in all, I can say this : the FF games are probably the most memorable RPGs that most people play. I played Xenosaga Ep. 1 all the way through for three weeks about a month ago, and I actually can't recall the entire first half of the game. I played FFX a year ago, and I remember every single important event in the game, and even the progression of the relationship between Tidus, his father, and Yuna. You see, things like those make Square games what they are. Also, nothing in those games is ever better than the initial time. I mean, you can appreciate the games' robustness, and thoroughness, but the initial flash value is greatest its first time through. To remake a game, is to ruin it's initial play value. Why? Because if someone remade any of those game, everything would be a side-by-side comparison to the original. People would be so busy critiquing, that they'd never be able to truly enjoy the games for what they were meant to be.

In my mind that's probably the most compelling reason NOT to remake the games....... A compilation however...... preserving the games in their original format? I think that's something that would be VERY good. Especially if they made it in a limited release.

Hey, it works for Rockstar games, continually re-releasing and repackaging their older games, so I'm sure it'd be a small niche that Square could fill in.

Remaking a game doesn't mean it's just a graphics upgrade. Take a look at Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes on the GameCube and compare that to the original PSX version. The story is the same but everything else is so much better. Given Square-Enix's reputation, they would want to make the same kind of impression. And since FF7 was/is the most popular RPG ever, there will be a lot of people who will buy the game. I know I am one of those people, hell I'm even getting the Advent Children first day when it comes out on DVD just because it involves FF7 characters. The game is a classic, bring it back means a lot of profit.

network dysfunction causes double postings. :-P

but as far as that picture goes, i think that it's from that game that square has on the cellphones "FF7: before crisis". if not, it's some anime cutscene from something that we have not been exposed to just yet.

What I would really like to see is a remake for the PS3... but same graphix as far as the ingame graphixs are due... maybe redue the cinemas... and maybe add more of the story line thats missing in there... like the part that follows what happens to Zack after that... cus he doesn't die... and little things like that...

@troten: i'm afraid zack did die. his body didnt react to jenova like the others, so he didnt have a long life. in the shinra mansion at nibelheim, there was a report that zack had been shot. uhhh... also, from the trailers of advent children, zack and aeris had memorials placed where zack was shot to death.

but in all honesty, FF7 remake is feasable with the technology that we have. some say that the original team is not there to do the job, but i say that's why they have the soure to their old stuff. some think it's not going to be a money making venture for squareenix because of the time and money that has to be put into it with this new tehnology. also considering that was the largest selling FF game, quite possibly the largest selling RPG in the world. some would assume that ppl wont want to spend another $50+ on the same game they have for the ancient ps1, when they can play it on the ps3. personally, yeah i'd get one. if you did an online survey of who would atually buy a FF7 remake for ps3 with updated graphics, i think you'd get quite a lot of votes for it.

I see alot of people don't really like the ability to control your characters instead of the computer controlling the characters, but recently kingdom hearts is very popular game.Even though it is a kids game, the ability to control your character makes the game what it is I think. If they made a Final Fantasy game that was based on controlling your characters,it would still be considered an RPG.Take a look at Fable for Xbox(considered a good RPG,didn't really have good graphics also but they gave you the chance to control your character which made the game better I thought),where you can control your character not click on command prompts telling them to attack but rather hitting buttons on your controller that interact with attack, jump or healing etc...Trust me on this, controlling the characters would be a big improvement I think.Square-enix has alot of potential, but releasing the same game fighting layout is getting old with the command prompts. They need to step it up a notch I think like Devil May Cry,Rygar or something similiar where you can control how your character interacts with the scenario around them, instead of the computer playing the game for you.Final Fantasy latest releases for the PS2 have been pretty good, but they still make you use the command prompts for attack, heal, switching characters etc...Final Fantasy 8 had a difficulty level, but once again the recent final fantasy games are more like strategy rather than RPG if you ask me.The reason I say this is for the fact that all you are doing is thinking for the computer, but the computer actually interacts with your commands whatever you tell it to do.So basically the computer is actually playing the game for you, when you play these games you are really just watching someone play it for you while you watch.Still though I would probably play the game even if it did have the fighting command prompts, but probably get bored of it after playing it one time.FF7 is very popular I agree, the story plot and world, summons, main characters are definately interesting.I just don't like the way you fight in the game, but kingdom hearts fighting layout was actually an improvement I thought. It is alright for PSX,but the systems we have now at the present can handle the ability of controlling the characters instead of the computer doing everything for you when you fight.I would expect to see this kind of improvement I hope in the future released RPG games from Square-enix,but I guess there are not alot of people that want to change how the fighting layout is in the games.

I agree with you SuperXL about remaking the FF7 game with the same graphics. Why make the same game with the same graphics for PS2,when you can get it for PS1 it wouldn't make sense to be honest if you ask me.The PS2 has a PS1 integrated into it already and the price would differ.I seen some of the remakes of Resident Evil for GameCube, they caught my attention. They had the same story, characters, fighting scheme but they differed in graphics. An increase in the visual graphics made the game sell once again, same game and same plot just had improvements on graphics. It is actually cool to be honest I think, how our game developers can take an old game and make it look like it is new.I miss Knights of Round, why don't they bring that summon back into Final Fantasy. That has to be one of the best summons I have seen out of all the Final Fantasy games.

@L-Burna: "taking an old game and make it look like it's new" makes me think of the super mario brothers series that came out on NES first, then they got a graphics overhaul for SNES' super mario alstars. that's the type of drastic graphics improvements i would like to see done for FF7. they have the technology, and we are the fanbase who would be supportive of the company's efforts to redo the game. lots of people would buy it. i know i would.

i dont think that i will agree with you about the fighting system of FF7. it's simple and easy to use. many people do hate the turn based system, but it's a matter of preference. i think that was the method from previous games, and they hadnt learned to let go of it yet. but also at that time, what they had done was unprecedented, and maybe they wanted to retain some old elements so that you dont get too lost in the gameplay. i believe that the fact of, at the time, and how they programmed the game, they couldnt allow very much info on screen.

you mentioned kingdom hearts, and i think that the fighting system was pretty decent, but the computer is still controlling your additional characters while you use the main character. i think that the story behind KH is why you only control one main character, with two subs. FF7 had a big cast, since you could only make a party of 3, you might not need computer AI to control them all. which goes back to you only making a party of 3, and having one person onscreen running around.

i just recently started playing summoner, and found out you can set AI for the other characters, but you still have to have one main character to interact with the story. at the end of it all, you're still having characters being controlled by the computer. with the FF7 battle system, you can personally direct each person's action as you see fit. from what i understand, you'd prefer a battle system like KH, but what about the rest of the team. at some point you get up to 9 characters at one time. you can't set AI for them because you can't take them all into battle. the problem with that was the initial limitation of the PS1 hardware, simple and plain. PS2 hardware allowed for more/better graphics onscreen, and more/better memory handling. that would explain why KH's battle system works out so well.

personally i wouldnt mind if the turn based aspect of FF7's battle system was maintained. it can be updated and modified, but if that changes, it could also change the feel of the game. and that could be bad for the game in general. take into consideration, fighting one of the weapons (emerald or ruby). having 9ppl is good, but considering how strong you have to be in order to beat them, everyone should be strong right? but if you're using 9ppl to beat it, wouldnt that mean weapon has to be stronger in order to maintain the challenge of fighting it? suppose you still have the 3ppl party. wouldnt you rather control what everyone does, instead of them randomly doing something stupid that you dont need them to be doing during tha scenario?

that seemed like a lot just to say that the battle system is fine the way it is because it allows you to control all of your characters, and changing it could be a bad thing in the end. now what would be stellar, is on the fly materia switching.

Well yeah I do agree with you about the other characters, but if you are controlling one character at a time then they can't do stupid things. The ability to switch to a different character would eliminate the issue you are talking about, only problem would be you could only use one character at a time. The additional weapons in the game where pretty cool Ruby and Emerald, but you can beat them with one character. It makes it more challenging to fight one on one I think, and even off FFX I fought in the calm lands against the monsters created one on one without using my additional characters. It was just a test to see if I could do it to be honest, but the level of the monsters would change in difficulty depending on a party or just using one character at a time.Your definately right though about the computer controlling the fighting system, even in KH the additional characters where controlled. What happened when you went and fought Sepheroth in the colleseum though ;).You could only use one character am I right, and even though he is considered hard to beat.It is possible to beat them which requires you to use more skill.Like I mentioned earlier Final Fantasy is making the games too easy, but applying a difficulty setting for the game you can choose how hard or how easy you would like to make the game. The materia was a pain n the ass no lie, constant switching of the materia and setting it up to do chain combinations.I agree with you also when you talk about the materia.I don't think a fighting system change would make a big difference if actually applied just right, but the current fighting system is outdated in my mind.If they keep using the same fighting system,it will never change and so far it hasn't really made that many improvements except for graphic wise.Trust me there are ways to work around the KH fighting system to make it better. You have to also think that KH was a gamble with Squaresoft and Disney, for even integrating that fighting system. It actually worked though, you have to give them credit for using it.They made alot of sales by just using this different fighting system.Since it hasn't really been introduced into many games, flaws are going to show up as you mentioned.I did hate the additional characters actions, and would rather play without them in KH.FF7 can use the live action fighting system, switching to different characters could also give you better fighting strategies and would be used by choice of which character you would like to use as your main character.I'm not saying the current fighting system is bad to use,but what I am saying is why not take a chance and try it out before regarding it as non negotionable.Let's say maybe not in FF7,but atleast one of the Final Fantasy games they should try to integrate it in.You also forgot to mention this bro,if you can take control of your character this could make online alot better.I'm not really into online to be honest, but I see alot of people play online these days as well as offline. When they made FFXI I thought it sucked and I never wanted to play it,just for the fact that it was mainly for online than offline.Given the choice of offline and online like some of our current games would be another improvement to the Final Fantasy series. There are numerous things I could come up with to make the games for Final Fantasy even better, but sticking with the same old fighting system is not an improvement of the game to be honest bro. They are actually stuck with this old fighting environment that should be looked at more clearly I think. The turnbase system has flaws as well as the system I just mentioned to be honest. For instance waiting on your turn to attack and the computer following your commands isn't really what I call the perfect fighting system. It makes fights take longer depending on certain enemies, and just makes the whole game seem longer than what it really is.Being able to attack as much as possible, and no given time limit can give you advantages. This is what I think about the turnbase system, and the live fighting system. The turnbase system does allow you additional characters to fight along your side, but who wants to wait on there turn and why is the computer taking control of the fights. The live fighting system has flaws in carrying additional characters, but eliminates waiting on your turn and gives you more freedom of your character.Just an opinion of what I would like to see in a Final Fantasy game,no improvements on the fighting system have been made.If anything should be looked at I would say the fighting system, because they have never made a change to the fighting system. They have always stuck with the turnbase system, and it is getting old in my opinion bro.

i suppose the turnbase thing is outdated, and does tend to make gameplay last longer, but like i said, it's a matter of preference. freeform (live) fighting is good in that you can set all your other characters' AI to do whatever, and your main person can sit back and do nothing. now that doesnt seem to be any difference from the computer controlling the fight. you can choose to fight anyone, or anything with either mode. so once again, preference plays a part in it. but i assume that squareenix will come up with some fight system that no one will like initially, and then it'll grow on us (hopefully)

that thing with sephiroth/herc/ice titan in the colleseum is just the way the game is. it's possible to beat these characters one on one, but you're not even given the option to have extra characters alongside you. so that FORCES you to play it solo. beating monsters one on one in FFX is doable and makes for a great challenge and test of your skills, but the way the game is setup, you'd have to load up your character with lot's of HP, magic, and accessories in order to fight bosses and stuff. which means you have to run around fighting for 23 days straight just to level them up enough to get the power spheres that you need to move around the board just so you can make a well ballanced character or make one nearly unstoppable. doesnt that add to the time you spend playing the game as well? and besides, unless you are the type who must have a low completion time, FF games are meant to be played for their engrosing stories, and character development (or something like that).

i just assume that FF11 is ok. i do not have internet access at my apt, and i do not plan to get it. i also dont want to have to pay a fee every month, just to play ONE game on the internet. also, by the time i get into it (if i ever decide to) most of the characters there are pretty well established, and i'd have to play for over a year or two just to catch up to their levels of today. online play gives you the chance to test your skill against someone else, but it doesnt do me any good since i dont have online capabilities.

I just wanted to add something about the full control comment. Personnally I hate it. Any of you tried Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time(also published by SquareEnix)? It has that kind of control and lemme tell you something, I think that's probably the worse control scheme ever (in a RPG of course)... And I personally prefered FF8 and FF9 to FF7

OK another reason why I would like to see full control over the characters would be multiplayer support for offline as well as online.I'm sure you have to pay for online, but wouldn't you be given a choice if it was online and offline. You know that online charges don't apply to offline right. The ability to make your character do flips or whatever would be nice, and would be a change from the present fighting system that we see in every final fantasy game.I can say that not everyone likes the turnbase fighting system, and then I can say not everyone would like the fighting system I just mentioned.Everyone has a different preference when it comes to RPG games,so why not broaden a game like final fantasy instead of keeping the same fighting scheme.Square-Enix makes Star Ocean Kerdel, but I am sure that the same developers that made Final Fantasy where not involved with Star Ocean.Game companies are huge you know and there are alot of game developers in these kind of game companies.Take Rockstar for instance, they have game development quarters set up all over the world. The same applies to Capcom and Midway etc...the possibilities of the same development team making Star Ocean as well as Final Fantasy is rare.Final Fantasy is one of the most popular time consumed develop games they make.Everyone has a personal preference when it comes to a fighting scheme and turnbase is not a change in final fantasy.I can say that not everyone likes turnbase, and then again I can say not everyone will like full control.I don't really care to even see what I mentioned made into one of the final fantasy games, but anything different from the turnbase system is fine with me.It would be different, and a change is not going to hurt Square-Enix.Have they made any improvements on the fighting scheme no,and it has been the same fighting scheme since FF1.You can't really say they did anything different in the fighting style in any of the games, because they all look the same to me.No changes have been made since they released the first game for final fantasy all the way up to the very last game they made of final fantasy.I will have to look into Star Ocean to understand what you are talking about Kerdel, but from the games I have played so far with full control I like.

hello

Heres my two cents.Nieter Square nor Square Enix has ever had a game sell more than ff7 and the reason is oviouse after having sold more copys than it had ever done it final game it sent out a comercial or two for there game . So it had two excelent game sell periods. To top that off the game was excelent arguebly the best the mechanics werent as sofisticated as X but the story was much better and charicter dont have to be so human they just have to be beliveble and the chars for VII were .You were most defenatly heart torn if not a little exited when you saw Sapiroth Drive his sord straight through Aris .And if you were level 50 and under when He summens Nova and one winged angel starts to play you become terafied of loosing the game.Yes this game had it all cool charicters reviting storline excelent music a fun if not complicated magic system i enjoyed the game very mutch .More importatanly the remake of this game in spacific is most likely inevitable just from the economic stand point I believe their waiting for their current projects to come out and really intice the buyers for the remake after all its all dollars and cents to them. Dening what actions they take to rais the suspence for the sale.

I have a question... why would Square make all these "prelude" ffvii games if their time isnt worth to remake it like they claim? If they have to wait till their current projects are done... then why they keep shipping out new ffvii games all the time? FFvii dirge of cerberus...before crisis... and the Compilation of FFVII... why not go after the remake too?

but that is a good question. i would think that they'd make more money from a FF7 remake. more than they would from spinoff games. if they had it ready for the ps3 launch. many many people would go get ps3 just for that game alone. i know i would be one of them. i'd more than likely pay whatever rediculous launch price for the console and the game itself.

that pic might come from some other FF7 game 'crisis core'
