Writer: LG GSA 4163B
Firmware: A104
ASPI drivers: Have tried Adaptec's, ForceAspi and Nero's to no avail.
I'm losing sleep and sanity over this. When I first installed the writer, blank discs went unrecognized. After installing aspi drivers and updating the firmware things were running beautifully. Recently I had to reinstall windows, now no matter what I try, I can't get my writer to recognize blank media as anything but Audio cds. Plays real DVDs and burnt media, just won't recognize blanks. Please help!

so all you have done is reload windows xp? and not touched a thing anywhere else!
try going through this first!
1. Running Programs
Make sure you quit all running background programs, such as anti-virus software.
Windows 95 Users
Use the Ctrl-Alt-Del function to quit all the programs using the Task Manager, EXCEPT for the Explorer, systray, and your recording software
Windows 98/ME Users
Select [Start] -> [Run], then input "msconfig". Disable everything under the [Startup] tab, except "system tray'.
Windows 2000/XP Users
Open the Task Manager, then select the program/s under the [Application] tab, then click [End Task].
2. Drive Connection
Other devices may be interfering with the CD-R/RW drive. Disconnect all other removable devices, then try recording again. If there is still a problem, try the following.
Optimal Hardware Configuration
All hard drives are placed on the Primary IDE, check that the drives are correctly set as master/slave. CD-ROM/CD-R/RW drives are placed on the Secondary IDE, set the recording drive as the "master". If you are using a USB or IEEE devices, disconnect them.
Update your chipset
Windows 95/98/ME Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click on [Device Manager], then click to open [Hard Disk Controllers]. You will find: the Primary IDE Channel controller, the Secondary IDE Channel controller and a brand name controller, e.g. Intel, SIS, VIA, etc. The brand name controller is what needs to be updated. Please visit their website to obtain these updates.
Windows NT/2000/XP Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click [Device Manager] on the [Hardware] tab, then click to open the [IDE ATA/ATAPI (hard disk) controllers] section. You will find: the Primary IDE Channel controller, Secondary IDE Channel controller, and a brand name controller, e.g. Intel, SIS, VIA, etc. The brand name controller is what needs to be updated. Please visit their website to obtain these updates.
Configure Windows
Make sure that your operating system has been fully updated. Visit the Microsoft website to acquire these updates.
3. ASPI Manager
Check your ASPI layer configuration. Your recording program is likely to use the standard windows ASPI layer, which has been replaced by another ASPI layer of yet another recording program. Make sure you have the original windows ASPI layer in use and retry. If the problem persists, contact the drive maker.
4. DMA Settings
Setting DMA mode:
Windows 95/98/ME Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click on [Device Manager], then click on [CD-ROM]. This will expand to show the CD drives on your system. Right click on a drive and select [Properties] from the menu. Click on the [Settings] tab and check that the [DMA] option is enabled. Repeat this procedure for the remaining CD drives.
Win NT/2000/XP Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click [Device Manager] on the [Hardware] tab, then click to open the [IDE ATA/ATAPI (hard disk) controllers] section. You will find: the Primary IDE Channel controller, Secondary IDE Channel controller. Complete the following procedure:
Right click on the Primary IDE controller and select [Properties] from the menu.
Select the [Advanced Settings] tab. Check that the [Transfer Mode] for both devices is set to [DMA if available].
Repeat this for Secondary IDE controller.
Note: In some cases older CD-ROM drives will not support DMA mode. In that case please set both devices to PIO mode.
5. Disc
Recording errors often occur when the disc is dirty, or has fingerprints or scratches. If an error occurred during test simulation (before actual recording), clean the disc. If you are getting recording errors, try the following.
Use a different blank, recordable disc.
Use a different manufacturer's disc.
Ensure the disc is clean before recording:
Remove all fingerprints, dirt, and dust from the shiny side of your disc using a nonabrasive cloth with a mild, nonabrasive soap solution.
Wipe the disc from the center to the edge of the disc.
Dry the disc completely.
Error during file verification
If an error occurred when the files were being verified, record the same files again using a different disc.
Read error when copying a disc
When copying a disc, if an error occurred while reading data from the original disc, the original disc may be scratched or dirty.
Try cleaning the disc.
Remove all fingerprints, dirt, and dust from the shiny side of your disc using a nonabrasive cloth with a mild, nonabrasive soap solution.
Wipe the disc from the center to the edge of the disc.
Dry the disc completely.
Try using a different source drive.
To change the drive you use to read your disc, click the Change button when asked to insert a source disc into your drive tray.
Select the drive you wish to use from the drop-down menu.
Insert your disc into the new drive.
Try using copying the disc using one drive as both the source and destination drive.
When you use your recorder to both read and write to your disc, B's Recorder GOLD creates an image file of the entire disc to your hard drive and then copies that temporary file onto your blank disc. This can be helpful if the drive you are using to read your original disc is slow or unreliable.
If the problem persists, contact the drive maker.
6. Drive
If you have tried Actions 1 through 5 above, there may be a problem with your drive. Contact the drive maker with details of the error code. If the 5th and 6th digit of the error code is 80 through FF, then the error code is maker unique. The descriptions of these error codes differ depending on the maker.

All I've done is reinstall Win98SE. I had this problem when the drive was initially installed. Firmware update did nothing, but after installing new aspi drivers (both adpatec and Nero, not sure which actually did the trick) everything worked fine. The adaptec's aren't working nor have the Nero dll's.
I've gone through each step, except the chipset(why would that be a problem now all of a sudden?) and as for error codes, I haven't recieved and error codes. The drive simply attempts to play the blanks through cdplayer. I can't describe how frustrating it's been, i'll try the chipset(if i can find drivers for this old hunk of chunk) and hope it works.

hi
the via drivers are needed for cd/dvd drives to work correctly and if you wipes your hard drive they have gone! so need to put them back like sound drivers to ...
via drivers are neede so you can set DMA = on!

Well, like i said i'll try to find them but it's an old board. Thanks for the help but ig et the feelign i'm screwed either way. god, and it was running beautifull less than 24 hours ago. :(

Intel® Bus Master IDE Driver
End of Support Announcement
Intel has discontinued support for the Intel® Bus Master IDE driver. This means that Intel no longer posts material for this driver on the product website. Support was discontinued Monday September 29, 2003. The reason for this decision was due to the fact that the supported operating systems for the Intel Bus Master IDE driver are no longer supported by Microsoft*.
Note: The Intel® Bus Master IDE driver was for use with Windows* 95 Retail and Windows 95 OSR1 on Intel® 440 AGPsets and Intel® 430 PCIsets only.

thanks again for your help and patience. you can see why i'm frustrated. 2 days ago i burned dvds on ridata, memorex and benq. today, while those discs play on this drive, it won't recognize their blank counterparts.

well i wanted to give up but i'm too stubborn lol
reinstalled windows again, this time it worked fine, until i installed the aspi drivers, programs wouldn't recognize the disc
drive at all let alone the discs. tried ForceASPI again and this
time, praise the gods, everything is working. (for now)
thanks for all the help and hopefully the thread ends here. i'm
going to attempt burning tomorrow, for tonight i'm going to try
sleeping for the first time in 48 hours.

not sure it was the install itself, because after i reinstalled windows the second time it was actually worse! to tell you the truth i'm still not sure what finally did the trick. it may have been ForceASPI or roxio's software. or both? it seems to have kicked in after they were both installed so maybe there's a link or specific dll somewhere. thanks again for the help, everything is working great, when it works, this burner is a thing of beauty and i've written 3 today to make up for lost time lol.

hi
you will find its the roxio software and its on microsoft website that it will knacker your drives up bigtime mosr people here wont use, it conflicts with lots of other apps you need to use!
also uninstalling it wont get rid of it!!!
you need to get an app called ROXIO ZAPPER to really get rid of it from registry, then it can still leave your drives not fully working..

i've never had a problem with roxio and i've been using it for years. once you get the proper configuration and remove it's certain components from startup there are no problems. i don't use it to author cds but i like its cd and VCD authoring. the major problems i've read about have to do with it's drag to disc RW element, but later updates removed that element and it was no longer supported. to author dvds, ive been using 1click copy and on occasion use DVD Shrink or decrypter to adjust the disc properties. like i said, this LG drive is an absolute dream, when its not a nightmare installing. i wish microsoft and the manufacturers would get their acts together and decide on a standard layer and at least warn new buyers that their products need them. take care

Roxio's Drag to Disk, Nero's InCD and other packet writing apps that were/are part of recording suites have been found to be troublesome with DVD recording. Some like Drag to Disk can be turned off in some instances and apps like InCD have to be deleted. Then with some systems, the Roxio drivers were at fault. That's where Roxio Zap comes in. Not everyone's system was/is affected in the same way.
Well, as long as you stick to smaller movies and do movie only with one click, and don't run into the newer encryption systems, you'll get playable backups. However, the Shrink is the better app. I got rid of one click because it is such a poor transcoder. Most of the name apps on the market are better, CloneDVD2, DVDCopy3, Nero's Recode, and Rebuilder with CCE to name just a few. The Copy3 and RB/CCE are my favorites. BTW, I own and have used all these programs, including the retail version of one click. The Grudge stopped one click dead in its tracks and the app froze. That was the last time I used it and when I deleted it. Also, the video quality wasn't as good as with other apps. I got it to see what people were talking about and found it to be a waste.
Forgot to mention, Shrink is probably best for recording DVD with older systems that have the Fat partitions. NTFS is the file system that works best and is part of the XP OS. New Technology File System (NTFS), the name is self explanatory.
