cyclic redundancy check

When I use DVD Shrink i get an error message saying that the cyclic redundancy check failed. How do I get past this. It is happening on Shark Tale when I try to back that up.

You have a bad disc. Replace it and try again.

As bilbo said when they error happens depends on the problem. Ripping - bad original - try cleaning the disc first it may be something as simple as dirt or fingerprints. Burning - bad media -use a different media - always make sure you are using good media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.
Cheap media causes problems if not right away it will down the road.

If this occured while using Shrink then you were not burning, you were ripping. This is caused by, as stated before, a scratched or dirty disc.
Sometimes a movie may have a bad file and you won't be able to see any defects. In this case try returning the original for another. If it is a pressing error of some sort, then all the originals may have that problem. I doubt it in this case.
Another cause of CRC errors is when a movie has a newer form of structure protection encryption. I don't believe that is the case here either.

So this error doesn't mean that it's hit an encryption it can't get past? I always thought that's what it meant.

Can be both, clean your disk and try again or you can try DVD Decrypter to rip and see if it works, but with the movie Shark Tale I doubt it is the encryption.

Yep, must be the disk. I'm personally trying to back up a Star Trek disk and kept getting the same error, on my computer and my husband's. Tried to next disk in the series and that one went, so must be the first disk. Thanks for the help!

I tried a movie with ARCoSS just to see how Shrink would react and it wasn't pretty. Basically got a CRC error and then Shrink locked up and I had to "end a unresponsive program". Normally a CRC error does not lock up Shrink on my PC. Most CRC errors are caused be the dirty disc though. I usually clean mine off using my secret hi-tech technique. Some spray screen cleaner, an old tee shirt and a bit of canned air. While the thing is burning I clean my monitors as well.

Just my 2 bits worth. I have personally had the same error on a few DVDs while making a backup using DVD Shrink. This was in a Sony 16x DL DVD burner. I switched over to my Pioneer DVR-109 & all these DVDs backed up just fine, no errors. I am just making everyone aware it can be the DVD Burner that causes these errors sometimes. I get the best success ratio on backing up DVDs on my Pioneer, hands down.

I agree. CRC is a checking process that occurs inside the burner so the burner does make a difference. My 109 is great. I loaned out my Sony DL. :)
