Hello,
I have a Asus 16x DVD drive on my computer. It normally plays all movies using Cyberlink Power DVD player ver 6.0.
A friend gave me a movie that won't play on it, gives some kind of DVD Error message.
This movie which has been burnt on a writable DVD works fine on my Sony DVD player attached to Samsung plasma TV.
What could be the reasons?
I tried looking at its properties etc. It's size is 4.4 GB. Has 3 folders........Audio_TS,ULEADDMF & Video_TS.
The first 2 are empty. When I try opening the contents of the Video_TS folder the system hangs at times & at others it evens fails to recognize the DVD, but instead reads it as a CD.
How can I make this DVD play on my computer.
Thanks in adavance.

hi
sounds like the sonyRW isnt compatible with your drive! you can get firmware updates that may remedy this problem from the makers website of your drive.
Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Computer's DVDRom drive is ASUS Quie Track 16x/48x.
Software is Cyberlink Power DVD 6.0.
Sony DVD player is stand alone DVD player, connected to the TV.
I was doing some research on line & this is what I concluded. The DVDR disc has a ULEADDMF folder apart from Audio_TS & Video_TS, meaning that Ulead movie factory software was used to burn the DVD.
Some brands of DVDRoms have a problem playing such a movie, cause they cannot recognize the empty ULEADDMF folder.
It's best not to burn this folder, to make the DVD play on most brands of DVDRom drives.
As regards the stand alone players are concerned most brands would play a movie/DVD that has been burnt using Ulead movie factory.......
Waiting to hear your comments.

Download dvdinfopro and check out your Asus 16x48 DVDrom I have one, and mine doesn't support the DVD+R format, if yours is the same, and the disc is + format.
that may well be the answer.
best of luck

@Jane1 - i'm puzzled, haven't come across 'ULEADDMF' folder on copied dvd's - they normally should only have the other 2 folders. maybe it's a multisession dvd or something

i didn't look into this anymore as i'm fighting my eyelids. Had a quick at the link you found and saw Quote: ULEADDMF Will confuse some players.
Just like not having the empty Audio_TS folder won't work on most players
For now, if you just wanna play the movie, copy the Video_TS folder to your PC somewherre and play thru PowerDVD

Hi there,
After installing the latest ver. firmware (1.08), the DVD no longer hangs, but it still won't play.
The Video_TS files won't get copied to the hard drive, give some kind of an error....cyclic redunancy??
DVDinfo sw shows that the DVDROM doesn't have the necessary MEDIA CODES to support the DVD disc.
Once again which are the most versatile brands of DVDROMS & DVD writers?
I have a old home movie that I got converted from a video casette to MPEG CD version using Nero. The file format of mpeg is DAT.
Is it possible to convert DAT to a better or DVD format?
IF yes than what software do I need for conversion & how do I do it?
Thanks again.

hi
you could try but a cheapo brand new dvdrom drive for £15 for jobs such as this or use vcdeasy to convert the riff header on your DAT file to a mpeg2 complaint one so as divxtodvd can make it a vob/ifo/bup file extension (dvd structure) to burn with say nero.
have you tried a simple copy and paste from the folder VIDEO_TS to your hard drive?
dat files are usaully vcd fomat which mean getting to dvd = 2 losses of quailty = crap video end product.
CRC = Cyclic redundancy error = dirty disc / scratched / not compatible....

cyclic redundancy usually means scratched or dirty disc, or even crap quality discs.
As to the .DAT file, you can play that by dragging in onto windows media player. There are various tools to convert between formats. look at top of page in software section for vso divxtodvd (can't remember how you spell it though)
as to dvd readers your dvd-rom drive sounds quite recent. they are quite cheap now so you could buy another similar drive to what you already have, ie a dvd-rom/cdwriter combo drive. your drive is most likely fine, i think your problem is this particular disk. if you buy another dvd-rom drive i fear you will have the same grief with that.
as to dvd burners, there are quite a few good makes out there, Sony (which tend to be rebadged lite-on drives), pioneer 109, NEC 3520, 3540 etc (NEC seem to bring a new drive out every other week), Benq, etc etc

Hi again.
I took the DVD to a guy who has quite a bit of experience in burning DVDs/CDs.
He looked at the DVD (which to him looked in a fine state), tried running it on his pc, but it didn't despite that he was using Ulead DVD player software.
His reasoning was that most probably it was burnt from a DVDRW disc to a DVDR, which was the problem causing it not to play.
He suggested copying the Video_TS folder on the drive & burning it on another new DVD.
Any comments on the above...
One more issue, correct me where I am wrong.
I assume that normally there can be only 2 optical storage devices on a desktop.
I would like to know which brand/type would play & burn both CDs & DVDs.
Like a DVDRom can play both.
Can a DVD burner burn CDs too........if yes what brand.
I dont feel comfortable using a combo drive.
Waiting to hear from you.

@Jane1 - you can have more than 2 optical drives.
Combo drives are great. Mine does many many 100s of rips (it has region-free firmware too) and all my CD's. Then all my DVD Burner does is burn DVD's. As it's not doing any ripping i (hopefully) don't wear it out too soon.
As to copying the Video_TS folder, i pretty much stated that before. Copy it the the hard drive somewhere then you can burn that to a new DVD with whatever software you have

Can you explain in simple words, what functions do you get out of the combo & it's brand.(play CD,DVD & burn CDs??)
The DVD burner you only use to burn DVDs...yeah right?

it's a long time since i bought mine so don't know what's out there. Mine is an LG drive, exact model is in my signature. However there are many other decent brands.
Tell you what, here's what i would do if i wanted another drive (and i always do for a dvd-rom or combo drive). Go onto a website that does a few combo drives, read a couple reviews on the more well-known (and obviously reasonably priced) drives, then go here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php and see if there's region-free firmware for that drive. That way you don't have to worry about different regions of discs for watching or ripping from..
