DVD Movies play fine even without a chip. Although you should use only DVD-R or DVD+R.
They only reason that they may not play, is if your laser needs cleaned or adjusted.

movies are easier than games to get to work. And like Mik3h said they will play on your PS2 without modifications, unlike games.

I suggest you get two programs. now they will cost you about $39.99 each but i can tell you they are worth it.
Anydvd which runs silently in your system tray and removes any protection on the DVD.
CloneDVD2 which you use to copy them. With these two programs i have copies a few movies and they are flawless. Not only will it copy them, but you can leave in all the extra's, deleted scenes, outakes, and other stuff and still get really good quality.

If you want to go with a free method get DVD Shrink which will let you load the movie and remove anything you do not want. Then it will make the Files for you to burn. Then you can use your favorite burning program to burn the files.

I use to use DVD Shrink and burn with Nero, but the results were less than perfect.

"Only use DVD+R/DVD-R"

I have burned and played more than one DVD-RW movie on my PS2. Unmodded, untouched. Copy DVD to DVD-RW and play. I was tempted to use RW instead of regular because of the chance of me screwing up. Turns out (to my suprise, I was just planning to use them on DVD players) that my PS2 supported it. Don't know if it matters, but I used Memorex DVD-RW - 4.7GB(standard) 1x-2x. On the back of the box (which is a 5-pack) in the lower right corner under the serial it says Part Number: 3202 5536. Don't know if it matters, but I tried to be as descriptive as possible. Tired of reading posts like "I have a problem burning a DVD. Help me."

Thanks, Razor

yeah my friend uses DVD Shrink too and his copies are really good too. My problem was with Nero, and with Nero installed i can't seem to get it to burn on it's own. I unchecked the use Nero feature and pressed back up and all it did was back it up on my hard drive and stop. I will find the right setting eventually, but i can tell you the CloneDVD2 is top notch. But if DVD Shrink works fine then save yourself the $40
