Can't find the correct tutorial.

Hello everyone... I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to find a easy to read/understand tutorial for both DVDdecryptor and DVD Shrink. I have just spent over six hours trying to backup my nephews Dave Matthews Band cd for him. He and his girlfriend appear in the cd, as they attended the N.Y. Central Park concert. He asked me to make him a backup, as the cd is important to him.
I tried for over six hours, but I continue to get errors no matter which way I go. I have tried to shrink first, then burn; and I have tried to create a folder on my desktop and send the iso image there. Nothing works as I get "cannot find the path" (worded similar), or I also get the error "I/O Error SCSISTATUS 0x02"
I have printed and read, and re-read over and over, a guide I found from a scub diver Pete. But I just cannot figure out what I am doing wrong here. Is there another tutorial that anyone can lead me to? Preferably one without any humor in it? No offense to the scuba man, but that humor was really getting to me.... I would hope to find a no-nonsense, step by step guide somewhere so I can learn what I am doing wrong.
In case it matters, I am using a Plextor 716-A. I am on a brand new Dell 4700 with 1G RAM, so I have tons of free space.
I would like to make him that backup so badly, as he and his girlfriend are right in the front rows in the video; it is important to him.
If anyone can let me know where to learn this procedure to backup, I thank you so much in advance.
note ..... I did search the forum for about two hours; trying to read and learn about the errors. But I couldn't seem to find a post with a similar problem as I have. I did find that post about people who don't bother to research on their own, but I did try to find this info.... I've read so much today, I'll be getting a headache shortly, lol !!

Oops; I forgot to say what media I am using here..... I am using the Plextor recommended Maxell dvd -R; and I also tried the Maxell dvd +R too. The disk identifier lists it as Ritek media, and the media was made in Japan, as I have read that it is amongst the better quality.
I also forgot to mention that the Plextor is properly recognized, and it plays back the dvd's fine. It also burns music cd -R's fine too.
I thought I should mention that just in case.....

Thanks so much, Squizzle... I will read them now. At 50 years old here and learning this new computer, I never thought I'd be trying to learn how to burn dvd's, lol ! But, I am disabled so I've certainly got the time and willingness to learn...
I hope to figure it out someday! Thanks again, my friend... I'll read those tutorials now and try to see what I'm doing wrong.
It seems to be in the "transfer" of the files from decryptor and shrink; and vice versa. That is where I'm encountering troubles. I try to put the file into a folder on my desktop, but then Shrink and Decryptor "cannot find the path" to it. So I think most of my trouble is communicating between the two programs...the darn file is not reaching where it is supposed to.

Can you just clarify one point:
Several times you mentioned your nephews CD, if it is a CD?
You'll need to convert it into a DVD format first, So you'll need the 'free conversion tool from here http://www.vso-software.fr/
The excellent guides squizzle gave you, tell you how to use it.
I'm not certain if they say how to convert a CD?
If they don't... just put your CD in the ROM, access the ROM with the program, and convert from there.

I've just read your last post, and suggest you read Petes or bbmayos' guides on setting your PC up before you start burning, things like aspi layer, and DMA are essential.
If it's any help, I never saw a DVD burner untill I was 63 lolol.

Hello Gringle; I feel young again, my friend!!
Well, it seems as though I found something out here. I believe there is something wrong with this Plextor burner. It would not eject the disk, so I had to use the emergency tool to open the tray. As soon as the tray started to open a bit, there was this terrible grinding sound. Obviously, something is amiss here somewhere. Perhaps this is a bad drive here......
A few days ago, I read many, many posts and forums and made certain that DMA was enabled here, and that aspi also..
My apologies.. yes, it is a dvd that my nephew has; not a cd. In fact, it is two-disc package, but the disc I tried to burn was just under that 4,600,678.000 bytes. (I think that is all set to fit...the graph bar was not showing any red color..)
As you can tell, this is very new to me... I guess my first step now is to troubleshoot this Plextor drive, as that grinding did not sound good at all. In fact, the tray door does not close all the way now, and it opens back up as soon as I try to close it. Definitely something screwey here now.. Perhaps that contributed to my earlier attempts of burning the dvd.
I have another nephew who is knowledgeable with pc's; I'll try to see if he can come over here and troubleshoot this burner for me.

Man; I was "talking to myself" earlier; didn't want to read any humor at that time.. My apologies Pete, and I hope you were not offended by me asking that. I was quite nerved up at the time.....

Hopefully your plex is still under warranty. I've read of some problems with the 716's. A buddy of mine had to return his 2 weeks after he got it. They sent him another brand new one and it's been good. Not saying anything bad about plextor, I still believe they are one of the best drives made. All makes have problems now and then. Right after I ordered my benq I read about a bad batch of them flooding the market. I must have gotten lucky cause my benq has performed most excellent. There was also a bunch of bad phillips drives (made by same company as benq) sold with new dell pc systems.

Hello Mort; I am sorry for the delay in replying to you... it was a hectic day here.
Well, there appears to be nothing wrong with that Plextor now... the front part of the (replaceable) tray cover was not fully snapped into the correct position, and the tray door was getting hung-up while closing. Plextor furnishes replaceable face plates for black color too; apparently I did not fully snap in the little tray door face plate correctly.
So, that means that I will once again try to burn this copy, lol!!
yesterday I tried for many hours, but no luck. I think my problem is sending the decrypted file to the desktop folder. The decryption appears to work fine; I just cannot seem to get to the "burn" part. I don't know why I just can't seem to open that desktop folder! I specify that "mds" like the tutorial says to; it just wont fetch that decrypted file and send it to the burning step....
But my friend, I will give it another try today...I wont give up that easily.
Oh, also... I don't think I have to actuallt "shrink" it, as I believe that file will fit onto my Maxell disk. So I hope this is condidered a good way for me to learn; one step at a time.. I don't think I need DVD Shrink yet.... But I will experiment today.

Hi arniebear; nice to chat with you again! I will head over there and print them out.
I just tried this again; again, no luck. I create the folder on my desktop; Decryptor successfully decrypts the file; but I cannot send the file to that damn folder... that is my problem. I click the folder "properties", and it is always -0-.... there is nothing in the folder. The file is not getting stored into that folder for some reason.
That is why when I clicl ISO Write, nothing happens... there is no content in that desktop folder. Also, everytime I try to open the folder through Decryptor "source / destination" prompts; it will always come up as "cannot locate folder / path."
Man, I just cannot figure out what I am doing wrong here, and I feel so stupid too. But I'll head over to your suggested sites, arniebear... I'll keep on trying until I figure this darn thing out.
By the way.. The Plextor "read speed" is listed as 10.5; is that good? It starts out around 5.0, then slowly climbs up to 10.5 speed.
Just wondering if that is within the norm...

OK, this sounds like you have an ISO and an MDS file, am I right? In DVD Shrink, don't click Open Files, instead click File, then Open Disc Image. Now find your ISO or MDS file (doesn't matter which one) and you should be good to go.

Well... Some very encourageing news here; partial success! I'm not sure how I did it, but I managed to successfully burn a backup. The only problem is that I apparently needed to shrink it, as it ran out... did not all fit onto my blank. I must have got confused with my numbers, as I thought I was just under the max amount that would fit.
The other thing I noticed was that the audio is very, very "strong" with the pronounciation of any words with the letter "s" in it.. for example.. "sunset"...the sound of the "s" is over emphasized a bit; too much "s" sounds. I hope I explained that o.k.; I know it probably sounds strange. I hope somebody knows what I'm trying to explain.
Now; there was this box that appeared after the burn, and I wrote down all the info so I could list it here; perhaps this might be of some help to decipher what happened. ........

Well, that is what appeared; I hope you might understand what this means as it might tell what I did wrong. The Plextor wrote at 8X with these Maxell 8X +R media. The burned backup played back fine on the pc; I do not have a regular dvd player yet. But, like I said the dvd cut off as there was not enough room. Apparently this should have been run through DVD Shrink.
Oh, speaking of Shrink... Is it best to use Decrypter first, then Shrink? Or is it best to use Shrink first, then Decrypter?

As far as the I/O error, those usually revolve around media quality issues. Maybe try different stuff, Taiyo Yuden are the best, but if you buy in a retail store I suggest Verbatim with the Super AZO dye and keep burn speeds at 4x or less to cut down on the chance of errors in your backup.
For the audio issue, that's very unusual unless the source is screwed up of course. I can only guess that it's also a result of media issues.
The process I recommend is to use DVD Shrink first to rip/compress the movie, then use DVD Decrypter to burn the ISO. Some newer movies however will require you to rip the movie with DVD Decrypter, then compress with DVD Shrink and burn with decrypter. The reason for this is encryption. DVD Shrink is a great tool, but it hasn't been updated in over a year and since then new encryptions have come out, thus making shrink somewhat obsolete as a ripper. This is where DVD Decrypter comes in extra handy. Unfortunately, as of earlier this week DVD Decrypter is now in the same boat. So it's still good right now for ripping, but sooner or later it's going to be obsolete as well.
Hopefully this sheds some more light on this subject.

I'm sure Pete won't mind tommy,
His sense of humor is what makes his guides popular. I have read every single one dozens of times as I am the one that turns them into webpages. I know that when the going gets tough it is sometimes better to have a simple step by step for some folks. I have considered "condensing" Pete's guides but I find they are more popular just the way they are. I also promised Pete I would not change anything while formatting. I run them through a spell-checker and post them as is. Pete and I go over the guides quite often to make sure there are no errors. We would always ask that suggestions complaints or anything else be brought up to me or Pete. Your input is important and helps us improve the site. Our E-mail links are at the website.
BTW I just added another ScubaPete Guide for A movie only backup with Shrink and DVD Decrypter.
About the only thing that might get Pete mad is you called him a "scub diver" hehe.

Good morning Frank and everyone! Oops... I am sorry for that; it was a typo on my part. I can only type "finger by finger"; the posts take me a long time to type using only one finger, lol! I must have not spelled "scuba" correctly; my apologies!! It was late at night here too; I think I was tired and seeing "double vision", loo...I spent so much time trying to learn the backup process.
But this 50 year old new-comer is not giving up, lol!! I will master this yet... Today is a tad busy as I'vr got to head to the doctor's now, but as soon as I return I am trying backing up that video again. They've got me wearing this cardiac monitoring thing, it clips onto my belt; and luckily it is coming off today!!! So the backing up will continue as soon as I get home later on. I have made good progress, so at least I'm gettin' there slowly!
Thank you for answering my post; very appreciative here! This afternoon when I return home, I'll try again and post my result here.

Hi Mort; thank you Mort for those kind words! Yup, I'm slowly getting there. Right now I'm learning what I can safely delete (for extras) to gain some additional room. I should have bought some dvd RW's,lol.... So I don't make too many coasters here! But, I guess it is part of the learning process.
At this typing, I haven't really learned the compression settings yet. The first backup I made ran out of room. I thought I had everything correctly set, but I guess not. That status bar up top was all green in color (no red) so I thought there was enough room for the burn. At that time, I had the compression settings on "automatic" mode; I thought that was correct.
So, that was coaster number one, Mort! Oh well, I've got to learn though...
I think I've got the Decryptor learned now; I just must learn the Shrink now. Maybe some day I'll splurge and buy some of those dual layer disks and experiment with that.
I can't tell you how fortunate I have been to find this forum, and how appreciative I am for the many responses I've recieved. I quickly learned that there are many, many fine folks here.
Well, that is the update for now... I will keep trying here, and keep you posted. Take care Mort; nice chatting with you.

nice to see another friendly face on here. The guides mentioned in the replies and ppl's signatures are great, i plug them to ppl whenever i can too. As for Shrink and Decrypter, i think they're the best things since sliced bread. Looks like you've used Decrypter, in which case you'll definitely enjoy Shrink.

Hi creaky; thanks for the welcome! Yes, I think I have Decrypter figured out, but I'm encountering some difficulties with Shrink. I'm trying to learn the compressions. The backup that I wish to do is so very close to fitting; in fact it shows in that green bar as being o.k. to fit, but it wont completely fit during the burn. So I ended up with another coffee cup coaster. lol...

@tommyo54 - no problem, wasn't sure if i was stating the obvious. (i'll whisper this bit - i dunno exactly what's in any of the guides as i do my own thing but i read nothing but praise for the guides and i always pass on the links when i can). Hi creaky... I just tried another burn; nada..
It seems as though I am having a problem with the correct transfer of the files from Shrink to Decrypter. I always get an error saying "cannot find file / or path" (similar wording..)

I'll review your lnik that you listed; thank you my friend.. I will head over there now and re-read, and then re-read some more.. I wont give up easily....
