Hi there,

DVD Decrypter v3.5.4.0 (No longer updated) is FREE.
DVD Shrink v3.2.0.15 (Free)

I would definitly purchase AnyDVD.

If you are happy with AnyDVD and DVD Shrink, then just purchase Nero Burning ROM to burn.

DVD Shrink also has a built in burning engine if you wish to stick with Free Stuff.

VSO 1ClickDVDCopy I suggest, because it will use VSO CopyToDVD to burn, and you will be able to SELECT THE BURN SPEED, which is very very important.

Most others will burn at MAX speed, which is a problem.
If you insert a 8x media (Not so good quality) it will burn it at 8x.

Is burning speed important ?
You will probably see 1,000,000 of messages on here explaining why, keep reading in these forums.

I have heard good of dvd43free, but I will not perform as well as AnyDVD to remove all known protection.

I have also heard good about InterVideo Copy 3 (Or something like that) that it's very good for video quality, but again, it will NOT let you choose the burning speed, but most people create an .ISO or a directory on their hard drive, then burn with Nero.

I've been burning G05's +R at 8X with my Lite-on for almost a year, and never had a problem, plus the PQ is great.

Best regards,

really?? DVD43 works on Closer?? Cool.

As far as the best software, I use the DVD Rebuilder/CCE combo and the results are better than anything I've ever seen. It takes a while and isn't free (CCE Basic is $60 US), but well worth it IMO.

As pointed out by squizzle, RB/CCE is without a doubt the best encoding software period under $2000. CCE basic ($58) uses the same encoding engine as it's parent CCE SP ($2000) just doesn't have all the bells and whisles. I would put Intervideo DVDCopy3 next followed by CloneDVD2 then Nero Recode2 then DVD Shrink. Of course most of these proggy's need a ripper. Some will work with only AnyDVD or DVD43 running in the background but some require the dvd be ripped to the hdd first.

This is my prefered method of making a backup. Rip the dvd with DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD running in the background. Edit the folder useing DVDRemake removing any previews, trailers, warning screens and logo's, saving a functional menu, the movie (of course), bloopers, deleted/extended scenes. I save or delete the other extra's as I so choose. Then encode with RB/CCE and burn with Nero at 4x on verbatum inkjet hub printable dvd+r booktyped dvd-rom. Makes a better dvd than the original IMO.

@mort81

I have Nero, a program called ones, clonedvd2 and copy to dvd. Also installed dvdcopy3 but for some reason will not let me choose my external burner. Is there a conflict that you know of with any of the above mentioned software or did I not configure it properly. Basically I wanted to compare the quality against clonedvd2. I have dvdrb and cce (pro) but i'm not patient enough to get it installed :)
Just looking for the best quality backups.

matt,

It won't let you choose your external drive as the sorce or the target or both? Let me know as I may have a work around.

I don't know of any conflicts with dvdcopy3 but some seem to have odd problems with it. There was a long thread between bbmayo and brobear a while back comparing dvdcopy3 and clonedvd2 and they both came to the conclusion that dvdcopy3 was better although not by much. The person to ask would be brobear. You could PM him. He's pretty cool and doubt he would mind. You can even tell him I recommended him to you.

You really ought to get RB/CCE up n running. You won't believe the quality. My polished folders are about 7000-7500 mb and I can't notice any loss in vidio quality on my 52" bigscreen. It takes on average about two hours for RB/CCE to encode. Well worth the wait. You can also use the batch processing feature and encode several folders while you sleep or are at work.

It won't let me choose my external burner as the target. Haven't tried it as the source yet as I use decrypter and shrink to rip to hd first. I'm using a laptop that already has an internal burner but seems alot slower than my external (my preference). Really want to test to see which are the best quality for backups.

As far as dvdrb and cce issue I tried using every guide on here but no dice. Could simply be some pc specs are better suited for software which I may have overlooked.

Ok, make a new folder on your hdd with a name you can associate with the dvd being backed up eg: the dvd is SLEEPERS so name your new empty folder SLEEPERS_DVDC3. For the target click on the little mag. glass/folder on the far right side and locate and select the new folder you just made. When DVDCopy3 is done burn the folder with Nero. This is also a neat way to control the burn speed as DVDCopy3 will burn at max speed otherwise. Let me know how it goes.

wait you mean dvdcopy3 is not a burning application and needs 3rd party software (eg nero)? I thought it was along the lines of clonedvd2. I'm feeling about 2 ft tall right now. Been looking for a guide on the specifics of dvdcopy3 and not one in sight. Just within the last month or so I've learned to uses ty03 and verbsw :) become halfway proficient with DVD Decrypter and shrink so I learn something new weekly. I would be broke replacing movies if it wasn't for you guys thanks :) Also think in some of threads I've replied to hopefully been contributing something positive. Oh here is my external burner not a plex or nec but it burns lovely so far http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827154021

Yes it does have it's own burning engine, burns at max speed according to rated speed of media used and burner being used. Didn't mean to burst your bubble I was only giving you a work around so you could check out the results untill we figure out why it doesn't see your external drive.

I always use the method I provided above anyway because I like to burn at 4x and DVDCopy3 only burns at max.

duh ok thanks I was too fast to reply. Just bothers me it does not recognize my external burner. In simple terms you mean run the movie thru dvdcopy3 burn with Nero and will be the same quality as if I used dvdcopy3 but with the adjustable speed of Nero to avoid pixel or skipping problems caused by high burn speeds.

You got it. Burning utility being used will not change the quality, burn speed can. We'll work on the reason why it doesn't recognize your ext. burner after you decide whether or not you like it. If you decide you like the results (you will), let me know and if you don't want to PM brobear I will ask him to join in and see if togather we can resolve the problem.

Speak of the devil... LOL And addicts are people who have shot their mouths off a lot, not mods. We're not always experts on everything (or necessarily anything for that matter). I've never run into a problem like this one, then I don't use external drives. If the app recognizes the drive in browse, I don't see why it won't write to it. Put a DVD in the external, assuming it is a ROM and burner, and see if the PC will read it as a source. Just checking to see if the PC will communicate with the external at all.

Morts method of using Nero as a burner for the transcoded files was a good one. Now you know if you like the quality or not. InterVideo has good support, but they don't waste their time with people who haven't purchased the product. I'd say purchase the product if you like it. One of my friends had a hardware conflict with some InterVideo software and they refunded his money when they couldn't get the software to function. They appear to be a good company to deal with.

It would be helpful to have info on the PC being used, brand and model, operating system, processor and its speed, RAM, HDD size, and brand and model of the external burner and is it hooked up USB or firewire?

bigorange is another user of this app and he uses external burners, so he may be of some assistance. PM him and see what he has to say and give him the link to this thread.

BTW, the Rockas installer makes RB installation easy for all. Try http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/ RB is great when you have the time for the best and Copy3 is a good app as well as being quick.

Mort, give CopyToDVD a shot. I like it just as well as Nero for burning and in some instances prefer it. Both suites have their strong points.

Hi brobear. Good to see ya. I think I got matt to where he can at least see the quality of DVDCopy3 but was a little puzzled on why Copy3 didn't see his ext. drive as a target. I gather that the other apps were seeing it.

We also need to help him get his RB/CCE up n runnin.

The only one you mentioned that is top notch is AnyDVD (a ripper). Slysoft's CloneDVD2 is a decent transcoding app, http://www.slysoft.com , you'll find AnyDVD here as well. Check out http://www.intervideo.com for DVDCopy3 and http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/ for RB with the Rockas installer. You'll need to use CCE SP if you're doing a trial, the Basic trial times out and isn't functional with RB. http://www.visiblelight.com/mall/productview.aspx?cat=201&pid=9 is where you can find a download for CCE SP trial. It has a logo on the output and has a trial period. If you like it, purchase the CCE basic for about $60. DVD Decrypter is still a good ripper, just no longer supported. As it's free, use it as long as its functional.

All he needs to get RB up and running is to use the Rockas installer. I gave the link for it. There is also a forum there as well as help threads here at AD.

DVDClone2 is not the same as CloneDVD2 by Slysoft. I gave the Slysoft link above where CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD can be loaded. With the free trials, one should at least check these out. Though I prefer the Copy3. I guess I allowed my bias to show. My main favorite is RB (which is a true encoder setup when using CCE).
