http://www.mediamatch.de/medien.php Media database with cross references for manufacturer info.
DVDInfoPro, DVDIdentifier and tools like those in Nero read media manufacturer codes from media.
The above info is for those who make the mistake of lumping media by brand. I've used excellent media sold under the Imation brand manufactured by Ricoh with the Ricohjpn code. Saying Imation is bad because you may not like a particular item in their line is no better than saying Verbatim is crap because they sell some items by CMC. Most people will say Verbatim is a good brand and I tend to agree. However, I don't use their CMC product (at least I've been able to avoid doing so to date). You'll find similar situations with other brands.
Since I mentioned good software like DVDInfoPro, I am on topic for this thread. After all, it is on the market. In fact if anyone wants to talk about media, they should have a copy of this software app (or something similar). It is a mistake to talk about brands and not include the manufacturer of a particular item. Brands sell media manufactured by different companies. If you think about it for a minute, you can see where just mentioning a brand only can be a problem. BTW, DVDInfoPro also has some handy utilities incorporated into it. Definitely on the best software list for anyone planning on doing a bunch of backups.

Well I thought I'd jump in and throw my 2 cents(and I do mean 2 cents!) worth in, while getting back on track. Of course we all know this has been discussed to death but here goes!
Top 6 apps in order starting with No.1, IMHO:
Dvd Rebuilder and CCE Basic-best job of any app out there for quality, period. No editing needed, but does need a burner app like Nero or Copy to Dvd.
Intervideo's DvdCopy 3-fastest app and the quality is fantastic(2nd only to RB/CCE) considering it takes about 30-45 minutes, easy interface.
Pinnacle InstantCopy 8- A little slow and it's editing isn't great(I use DvdReMake for that), but quality is very very good and it's easy to use. Cheap too at 20.00 or less.
Nero Recode-works much in the same way as shrink, but comes with a entire suite of audio and video applications (and overall, Nero's Ultra 6 suite is just tops-the best of it's kind,A+)
DVD Shrink 3.2-great job with new quality settings, good editing and re-authoring capabilities, and it's FREE. Needs a burner app like Decrypter(also free) or Nero, Copy to Dvd, etc.
Clone Dvd 2- Easy to use, decent(in fact pretty good) quality up to 30% compression, not too hard on the pocket.
Again, let me stress this is my opinion only and doesn't reflect the views of AD or other members ;>)
Right brobear??? LOL
GO VOLS !
