I am curious, what is the likelihood of being sued by MPAA for making illegal copies? I have a friend who said he is thinking about doing that. Does anyone know if people who copy dvds but do not sell them got sued?

Your friend is thinking of getting sued by the MPAA? Not a wise decision in my book lol ;)

But seriously, chances are he/she will be alright, as long as they're not selling them and telling the entire world they're doing it.

LMAO...nice one squizzle.

In my personal opinion, I think that likelyhood is pretty small. I mean the MPAA has no way of telling who is copying DVDs and who isnt. Of course ur friend is more likely to get caught if he DL's the movies online. For that I use Peer Guardian, not sure how well it works.

yeah I knew what you meant, I'm just good at noticing things like that LOL

I've used bit torrent before, you're just a drop in the ocean if you use them as far as chances of getting busted. One thing bit torrent does is keep track of your share ratio, which older P2P sites didn't (as far as I know at least). I try to keep mine at about 1, meaning I download about as much as I allow for upload. Bit torrent sites get bogged down if you download a bunch but don't allow uploading, sort of like gettin you back for not participating (or so they say anyway). If you get a share ratio too high, meaning you're using the site mainly to upload stuff, and that draws attention to yourself (at least this is my theory). I think your friend will be ok, as long as they don't get crazy with the uploading.

Huh this really makes me think. Is it worse to upload or download? Through downloading, ur getting illegal material, which is obviously illeagal, but thru uploading ur dispersing it, which seems like its more illegal. Any opinions on this?

both are illegal, but the best way to stop it is at the source. Stop the uploads, and you stop many more downloads.

IN the US, if yoyu chekc al the caselaw, no one has been successfully sued or prosecuted for only backing up/copying dvd's or downloading material from torrents for personal use.

The MPAA clearly does NOT want to test this in court against consumers as they may well lose.

They prefer like the RIAA to go after for profit ventures, pirates who sell large quaintites of illgally copied DVD's or people who upload to torretns, p2p etc.

They also prefer to issue press releases saying "downloaders", knowing the press will get confused, when in fact even during the RIAA p2p crackdown, no person only downloading was ever sued or even named n suit.

Even the case of DVD Decrypter may have been a patent issue, after all it was the patent element that killed 321. patent problems go to distributer not users.
