Im having the same problem :( Im gonna badger my friends and try to trade my dvd-r (50 pack) for their +r, but not many have dvdburner or know how to use it. That means I gotta try that so you better be here for support ;) Ill probably just break my drive tho.
Did you use warshrike's post on that forum site ( http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=218&Search=Sear... ), or something else to fix it? This knowledge is raping my mind

Not sure I need an engineer, but maybe somebody can find my brain?

XP Pro
512 MB RAM
1.3 Cpu
Firmware up to date (did it ten times)
Driver is fine
Power works, I can eject
explorer sees the burner, sees a full dvd but no name)
Shrink Won't recognize any disk I know works, nor will explorer.

Hmmmm. What am I missing....

No HW changes, been buring away non stop for about a year.

All of a`sudden shrink hangs on me so I go grab a dvd I know is good
and after 10 of these Explorer just shows Disk Full free space 0, as
it should.

Basically my drive is`dead, but has power. It will not read, it will not writed, and I certainly can't boot from it???

The only thing I can tell you guys is that my neice`and nephews were here, but they don't even know how to turn on my PC.

What the heck could be happening? I wish I could give you an error log. you know some more info, but the drive doesn't work.

I really won't be upset if this something very simple I am overlookig, because I'm stumped. I mean I could un mount the drive, and put it back, but I have power? It even ejects from Explorer.

It's an Emprex dual/double layer 16X internal, but I'm only burning regular 4300 GB DVD-5's. They don't just stop working???

Dang, I feel like I'm in the twilight zone. If it didn't have power,
that's one thing, but it does. It's like there is a lock on it do Ichecked my network settings, and I have admin rights, I never change those any ways. Help?

@Nihilator - only thing that comes to mind is the tiny little plastic jumper on the back of the drive itself, near the ribbon cable and power connector. can you see the jumper and describe which pins it's connected to ?. we can always search the internet for jumper settings and check it's set correctly

Hi Creaky,

I know of the jumper you speak of. When I first installed the writer, the documentation (which I still have) said to set the jumper so as to make the DVD writer a secondary master if possible. I do have two IDE Primary master channels, so my HDD uses one, and the DVD uses one. The only other IDE device is the floppy. The jumper is `still in place, and set as I originally had when every thing ws working fine.

I did notice somewthing different though as I booted up last night.
Briefly, and I mean breifly (because I wasn't looking for it), a message popped up "new hardware found - cd-rom." It disappeared before I blinked. So I went to the device manager to make sure it still saw my writer, and driver, and of course it did.

Now previous to all to this, I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver several times. I ALSO uninstalled Nero, (all of it) Windows Media Player, and the program associated with it (can't remember the name), got rid of BS player which came with Klite mega pack codecs, and got rid of the klite codecs becuase I shouldn't need those just to read a simple install disk, program, or whatever, anything but a DVD. I figured if I could get the lil' bugger to read a regular cd-rom, then I could go back and add DVD software and codecs step by step to detetmine what might be causing the problem. No such luck. I am going to do something that makes absolutely no intuitive sense, except that I blame MS for everything, and I'm usually right :-), and take the drive out of my machine, completely out I mean, and see what Device manager looks like, and just start over as if I was installing a new DVD writer. Makes absolutely no sense at all, but I have tried stranger things in the past, with various other non-related problems, and fixed the problem. All I could do is scratch my head, and say "Well, how about that, it worked." Of course there is no definition of "it" when somebody tries to fix a problem that is universally known not to fix that problem. :-)

I shall return...

Thank you...

no worries, with Microsoft half the time, no common sense is required in order to fix something, sometimes that does confuse things :)

Well, Creaky, can't blame MS this time. I went and looked at the thread on my burner, (Emprex) and most say it's a POS. But, to me, it was and has been working fine.

Here's the kicker though. I've been using TDK 8X DVD-R media. According to the thread, my writer does not support 8X DVD -R. I got my documentation out, and all it says it supportd 8X DVD + R, not -R

However I never burn faster than 4X ever. I don't see the point in creating possible errors when they can be eliminated by adding 5 minutes to the burn process. IOW, saving 5 minutes does not justify any possible burn errors IMO.

Having said all that, is it still "OK" for lack of a better word to burn media 8X -R at a speed of 4X. Would that matter? I mean, I can show you, mail you all the DVD's I made that work perfectly with the 8X -R media burned at 4X. But that didn't cause my drive to fart correct? Using explorer, with or with out a disk in the writer, it shows all space spent (all blue).

I was the 1999 computer bowling champ, and If I don't get this figured out, the whole machine and I will go down and register for the next computer bowling league.

Here's another problem: When I rt click on my writer, click on properties, all drives show up and show a location in the dialogue box. My HDD is shown as 0 (0), and the writer's location is shown as the same: 0 (0), but there are no conflicts showing anywhere. It says both drives "are working properly." Well, no they are NOT. My writer can't read or write, kinda like our students in high school, and it is being recognized as a physical drive, stick a disk in there, and it tells me I need to insert a disk. I've used CD, CD-RW, DVD-RW, and DVD-R media, no luck on any.

Being the newbie that I am, the location of both the HDD and writer at 0 (0, just tells me both master channels are being used. Or do I have A `hidden conflict my good friend Bill won't show me?

Next step is to swap my writer with my old cd/rw just to see if I can get it to read a dang disc! I have no idea how this whole mess could have started. I didn't change anything!

Arrghhh. <grumble> <grumble> I hate you Bill! This is all your fault!

I hope I'm not overwhelming you with info, but maybe some of these snapshots might help see what's going on:

This has my PC startup disc (bootable) with all drivers etc. in the drive

As a newbie, don't really know what aspi is, but I know it's needed for something.

Well, fixed the DMA problem, and used "forceaspi" so those two problems are taken care of even tho I pretty much knew they had nuttin to do with my drive not reading. Not too far behind Bill is my hatred for Nero And Roxio. I had to choose one so I went with Nero because you take just about any file extension, AVI, mpg, etc, and NV2-3 express will automatically convert the files into 1 movie. My hobby is downloading non-proprietary very rare video clips of the 60's and 70's bands. For those of you who are around 40, my age, and you used to think you were cool like me and made all the mixed audio tapes you could, that is exactly what I do except they are short video clips. Way cool. I have a video clip of The Stones and Jimi Hindrix just yackin, and also Mick and John Lennon chatting. I can't waste any more time on this, I hope the drive had a year warranty; I'll just take to Fry's, hopefully it actually is just dead. My machine is running way too healthy right now to re-install windows when I can only make matters worse.

you're right, we could keep going with this, but it does get annoying when it drags on. If you're able to swap the drive, i'd do it. i don't personally like these generic type drives. get yourself a better know brand, ie lite-on, sony or whatever. good luck and make ure to come back with progress, good or bad.
hopefully that should get you going again..

Well it does have a one year warranty (i've hade it for 8 months) but Frys won't honor manufacturer's warranties. So I am a the mercy of a company whose support page does not work. I emailed them, though, but who knows if it went to China Korea whatever. I'm not crossing my fingers. Also, as a last resort, I tried the other two jumper settings.
No luck.

i daren't go near recommending firmware for this drive unless you can provide more info, ie off the drive itself.

I think you are talking about the dangerous brothers? :-)

I'm not at a point to do that yet, plus, I put in my old HP CD-RW, reinstalled all the drivers for my PC, I mean, it booted right off the CD, and my DVD burner is just being ignored.

They asked me about the firmware; I told them I have the most recent version. It wouldn't make sense any way, there has been no upgrade in the firmware for over a year now. AND IT WAS WORKING. Still waiting for them to send me an RMA number and instructions.

I'm getting a bit off topic here maybe, but I have a new HDD I want to install. As I said, I have two master channels and of course 2 slave. The drive is basically for storage, ie, Im not going to replace it as my main HDD, so how should I setup the new HDD?

I'm thinking as a slave off my primary HDD channel, so I can leave a master IDE chanel open for my "new" burner. Does it really matter?

I'm thinking the burner might run a tad slow (encoding)if I set it as a slave, but there is absolutely no rhyme or reason to my thought process, it's merely a guess.

Hey Creaky,

You were right from the very beginning. The drive just crapped out.
I spent 7 bucks to ship it back express (and mostly to track). It got to their shop in Ca where I live (100 miles or so), and they shipped a new burner out to me. Whole process took 8 days. I can't complain.

Thanks for your help. Next time, please just tell me to do what you said! I'd have more hair.

Nihz
