I am trying to make good quality DVDs from AVI files I've downloaded. I have no budget for software so I need to do this with FREE software.

I'm trying to follow the instructions on the "Convert a DivX or XviD AVI to DVD" guide here on afterdawn.com. I already had DVD Encrypter and DVD Shrink. I have also installed AVIcodec, TMPGEnc and IFOedit.

I started with 5 AVI files and I think I've successfully joined them together into one 1GB AVI file. I am trying to use TMPGEnc to convert this file into MPEG2 format, per the instructions on the guide. My first problem here is that TMPGEnc says it will take 12 hours to convert my AVI file to MPEG2. I can live with that, although it seems like a LONG time. The advanced settings I chose, per the guide, are geared more toward picture quality than speed of processing but my computer is rarely unused for more than 12 hours at a time. More importantly, I can't get TMPGEnc to finish the job. It looks like it works for several hours overnight, then quits unexpectedly, leaving MPEG files of just a few hundred kb.

I tried converting to MPEG using WinAVI Video Converter. This program works much faster but leaves a large watermark in the middle of the video screen. And I have not been able to author a DVD with IFOEdit or DVD Shrink using the converted file generated by WinAVI Video Converter. Specifically, it doesn't look like any separate audio file is created.

I would like to complete this project as instructed in the guide, using TMPGEnc. But I'm open to any suggestion that will solve the problem. Could there be something wrong with my AVI file? Am I doing something wrong? Maybe have something set the wrong way?

I am using a 3-month-old Dell desktop with a P4 2.8Ghz processor, 80GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM.

I'd appreciate any help or advice any of you can offer.

Jim,

Thanks for the tip. I am running my AVI file through DivxtoDVD now. I'll let you know how it comes out.

Your welcome.
If everything goes right, the end result should be dvd compliant VOB files, that you can burn with the burner program of your choice:)

Jim,

Looks like DivxToDVD did the trick. Thanks again.

Now, the guide says I need to author the DVD with IFOEdit but I can't get that to work. I can't see that an audio file was created by DivxToDVD.

Do I need to perform this authoring step, or can I go straight to burning onto DVD-R?

It doesn't look like either DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter will do anything with the converted file(s). I guess it's becoming evident that I have no clue what I'm doing here. Can you point me in the right direction?

I've had good luck copying DVDs using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink and I have the RecordNow software that came with my PC. Which one of these should I be using?

You might want to preview the files before you burn them just in case.
You can watch them with your dvd player software, like windvd, or powerdvd etc...then, although Im not familiar with recordnow, that should do the trick for burning.Burn the VIDEO_TS folder.
