Okay, I have spent several weeks reading over threads in this forum and others (DVDDecrypter site is down though so I couldnt explore that one) and Im still confused :(

First I want to give a back ground to my situation...I do apologize up front for probably being dumb about all this!!

I have been making backups of my DVD collection for a couple of weeks now. I have a 300 Gig external Drive, USB connection and Im Building my Video library on there so that I can hopefully just select a movie from that drive using some sort of media device over my home network (Yeah right, they all suck so far :().

1. There is not A GOOD media device out there that will play my movies from my hard drive on my network :(

2. Im having a difficult time with what format to store the movies in. DVDDecrypter has File, IFO, ISO formats. If I store the movies in IFO or ISO I cant seem to play them from my drive on any computer using media player or Win DVD. File mode seems to work sometimes but not always. What is the difference? I have read the technical differences but what is the "pratical" differences IE....which one plays and which one doesnt?

3. Why isnt there more advancement in this type of setup? The DVD is a thing of the past, Mass storage should be the way to go and from there we should be able to simply download a movie rental from online sources.

My head hurts :(

Thanks for your time

For keeping movies on the hard drive, I recommend DVD Decrypter in ISO mode, as it's just one file (well 2 if you count the MDS, but if you don't want the MDS you can rip as an ISO using dvd shrink and no compression if so desired and you won't have the MDS). Then if you want to watch it off your computer download a proggy called Daemon Tools which allows you to create a virtual drive and mount the ISO as if you had a disc in a dvd-rom drive.

As far as the network issue, I'm unsure as I don't know your setup and I have never tried to view a movie over a network, so I don't know the bitrate requirements and all that stuff. If you use a router, check into port forwarding which may speed things up for you.

Thanks I will try the ISO instead of FILE. Are there any other parameters I should set or do I just go with all defaults?

Still working on a way to play a movie stored on my computer Hard Drive on a TV in another room. There are several options.... DLink Media server, XBox Media modification, Windows Media Center (and extended option) and so on. Im not happy with any so far :( since most dont play multi-file VOBs or the video is "choppy" over my home network (which is a 100 Meg netgear switch so bandwidth should be a concern.

The default settings should be OK, the only reason I see to change them is if you have a dvd that is all scratched up or something like that, there are more aggressive settings for that. In case you're interested in that, check out ScubaPete's guides (link in my sig).

I will read the links, I have a couple of movies that keep getting an I/O Read error.

Thank you for your prompt advice.
