I have used these disks and have had nothing but good burns.

I am sure that Sony is on their high list, next to TY and Verb. The good thing about Sony is that it is a quality media that can be gotten in the retail stores and it is consistent :~)

The Sony 8x+ are Made in two different countries. If you look at the Package of +8x some will say Made in Japan and some will say Made in Taiwan. The Made in Japam Sonys are Taiyo Yudens T-000-T02-000 and the Made in Taiwan carry the Sony I.D. I think both are very good but the Yudens will overspeed on my NEC 3520A and my L.g. 4163B to 16x without any loss of video quality. I do use hacked frimware but that is not why they do this. It also overspeeds with stock firmware. The dash media is a different story. I think they all carry the Sony I.D.

The 8x DVD-R will carry media code SONY08D1 which is considered first class by DigitalFaq. Sony DVD-R 4x is TYGO1.

Thanks ArnieBear:
I did not know that 4x Sonys were also TYG-01. I wonder if Liggy and DEEs firmware will overspeed them to 8x without spiking. I am going to research this. Thanks again.

@aland: If Liggy and Dees firmware can overspeed Ritek -R G04 (4X) to 8X or better, I bet they can do the same if not better to the Sony 4x. Unfortunately I don't have Sony blanks to try...Let me know if you research this out..

@movies27: Did you get the Maxell 8X -R (goldtops). If so, they used to code out Maxell RG02. I've noticed maxell changed their -Rs from being made in Japan to Taiwan. I still have 5 or 6 spindles of the MIJ Maxells. May be a dying breed...

@gamename

you should be fine with those, i have not had a LOT of experience with the Made in Taiwan Sonys...which coded out exactly as you stated...Sony 08D1 (only bought 1 50pk of MIT), but i have a few hundred of the MADE IN JAPAN Sony dvd+r (i use mainly dvd+r so i booktype to dvd-rom for better compatibility, personal preference of course). as arniebear stated, i do have quite a few of the Sony's and they DO rank pretty high up there w/ my TY and Verbs~ :) only because i try to find the MADE IN JAPAN ones for the Sony branded discs as well~ which at least in the dvd+r format, ARE TYs~ :P

but, i know a LOT of other members here with nothing but success on the SONY coded media...made in taiwans~ so, you should be just fine w/ the ones you can get inexpensively from your friend at walmart~ :)

if you can get them for a good price, SONY coded media is VERY decent stuff, even if made in taiwan~ i would put them on the same level as the Maxells~ i personally use ONLY "MADE IN JAPAN" discs when i buy locally, unless it's the Verbatims which then i use ONLY "Made in Taiwan" :) but, that's just me~ i stick with what has given me countless flawless results~ but, from my limited test results of about 50 backups on the made in taiwan sonys you mentioned, they are working just fine~ :)

that is Sony's newest "tag" term for their newest media technology:

Accucore stands for : ACCUrate-COmpatibility-REliabitily~

it's just an inclusive term of Sony media dvd tech.

marketing gimmick..hehe...hope that clarifies it~ :)

I am somewhat dismayed at movies27 report that his latest batch of Maxell -R 8X Goldtops coded out as Ritek G05. I noticed recently that Maxell no longer makes these in Japan but rather Taiwan. When made in Japan they coded out as mxl rg03 and in my opinion were "excellent".

I would be hesitant to highy recommend Maxell anymore (at least until the media code ID is resolved). Not that Ritek G05 are not decent media; I just never rated them on the same par as mxl rg03.

BTW: If you like Ritek G05 the best place and cheapest (When on sale) is office depot. A few weeks ago they run a sale on the Office Depot brand 8X -Rs for $30 for a 100 spindle and they coded out Ritek G05. Also there 4X -R code out as G04.

It seems like nowadays when you buy media you take potluck as to how they are going to code out. That's why it is best to stick with Sony, or TY, or Verbs--as least (so far) you know what you are going to get. If they ever change, then the media selection will be no more than a "grab-bag"--you take your chance.

That's just my humble opinion....

Arniebear: you lucked out; pretty soon all the inventory of MIJ will be depleted and we all may end up like Movies27...

I still have 5 or 6 spindles of RG03 MIJ and I believe they are a dying breed. I hope I am wrong. But I am seeing more and more of Made in Taiwan for the Goldtops as well as any -R media regardless of maker.
