Arniebear:
You were very lucky to get those MIJ Maxells. The new 8x goldtops are made in Taiwan, and I.D. out to Ritek G-05 and they are not good. The last dash media Maxell brand I bought had a sticker on top of the Made in Japan saying Made in Taiwan. All the + 8x are still Maxell002 and are great media.

Probably because WalMart buys in such large volume they have enough to stock store shelves for sometime, I imagine when this stock runs out they will get the newer Maxell media. I suppose I should go back for a few more while they still have these :~)

well, this is where i will have to disagree w/ you ALAND, you stated
Quote:
The new 8x goldtops are made in Taiwan, and I.D. out to Ritek G-05 and they are not good.
i have well over 500 flawless burns on Ritek GO5s from over 2 years ago~ mind you they still playback as well as the day i burned them. SOME people on here have had HORRIBLE luck w/ these G05s on their OWN particular setups, hence, many members put down Riteks as if they were the same as crappy ass memorex/CMC MAG media, but, quite frankly, they are NOT~ but, for ME, they are equal to the Maxell made in japans. :P

i think to pass judgement on particular media is SOLELY based on one's PERSONAL PREFERENCE/COMPUTER BURNING SETUP~ i know that both you and laboy have the nec3520, AS DO I, and i have recently tried burning a dvd on my left over Ritek GO5s from 2 years ago and they are as smooth as my Maxell made in japans that i have~ :)

Ritek is a reliable, solid company (nowadays, they were somewhat shaddy before) and are completely MADE IN TAIWAN...they are what some would call good "budget" media for those that can't afford TY and Verbatim prices~ :P

i seriously would rate my Ritek G05s 3rd on my preferred media of choice, after TY and Verbatim in that order. Maxell, even the made in japan ones, i would rate 4th personally...i have kprobe scans as proof to the integrity of my G05s...slightly better than my Maxells.

so, i guess it's really based on personal preference...i have the same drive both you guys currently use w/ that new modified firmware too~ i guess there are MORE factors people need to consider to their own burning preferences~

just my 2cents...i take it people are considering media MADE IN TAIWAN to be of crap quality, let me be the 1st to tell you, not only is that a retarded misconception, that is pure bull$hit~ YES, SOME/MANY manufacturers from taiwan are very LOW GRADE, POOR QUALITY manufacturers, but if you consider that Verbatim MCC media is made almost SOLELY in taiwan now and i stand behind Verbatim's quality and Ritek G05s as well, who is to argue when both I and Creaky have Verbatim Kprobe scans to prove how good of a quality it is?

anyways, im rambling...not trying to offend anyone with my comments, it's just being very close-minded and stupid to think that any media made in taiwan are not good (not saying you are making this claim ALAND, im not pointing fingers here, but SOME people do believe that fallacy). to that opinion, all i have to say is one word: Verbatim~ :)

Kivory 666,
The Maxell dash 8x that I bought and some friends bought were not good media. They I.D. to Ritek G-05. I put them through scans and the best they could perform to was 6x. Maybe it was a bad batch or maybe the Plextools Ident. Tool was wrong when they said that the media was corrupt. But again, I am just passing along my experiences and a few other that I know of. I for one won't get burned again by Maxell dash media. I have had great experiences with their +8x Maxell 002, but as for the 8x Goldtops Made in Taiwan, I think they were garbage, again just my opinion. My Verbs Made in Taiwan were great media, so I am not suggesting that all Taiwan media is trash, but for my money I will stick with MIJ.

@aland

i agree entirely with your point :) as i always say, stick with what works best for YOU~ :P

some people are just under the misconception that "all media made in taiwan are garbage" i just wanted to dispell that myth before it became more rampant here on AD...i read that statement elsewhere in a different thread and i had a lengthy comment about it where MANY senior members and addicts backed me up. i just wanted to make that clear to anyone else that might be reading this thread~ :)

i in no way meant to argue with you or offend you, like i stated, i was not singling you out~ i consider you and laboy buddies on here, so, just wanted to clear up the air if you took offense to my prior comment~ :)

have a good day~

No offense taken. I was just trying to share my experiences with you and other forum members. For the record, you are exactly right when you said that everyone setup is different and one persons judgement should be taken with a grain of salt. It is just that when I can get Verbs and Tys for the same price as CMC, well for me its just a no brainer. I will stick with Verbs and Tys, because that is what" I " get the best results with.

Let me chime in here to clarify myself. My disappointment was that Maxell appears to no longer be making mxl rg03...not that anything made is taiwan is bad (I know better than that, I love my Verbs) or that Ritek is bad media. Ritek G04 is what I cut my teeth on and the first one-third of my library is Ritek and the oldies still play well. I just prefer the mxl rg03 over the G05.

I think that when you buy media you should know what you are getting. If you buy Memorex 16X (and I know that you won't) you take a chance of getting at least three choices: CMC (Yuk) Prodisc R4 (pretty good ) or MCC004 (Outstanding). But you never know until you buy and try. That's my disappointment...

BTW, I have a spindle of G05s that I will burn into movies someday soon....

That is my whole point Laboy. When you buy TYs (I just bought 100 TYG-03 from Rima.com) or when you buy Verbs you know what you are getting. No dissapointment, and no coasters hopefully. And the biggest plus is that they arent any more expensive than the discs of lesser quality. Live and learn. I would bet that if CMC had there own brand they would change their quality control big time.

SONY08D1 is Made in Malaysia, Taiwan, China, and a very small amount Made in Japan. Movies: if you got the MIJ one you are very lucky. I am going to my Best buy tomorrow to see if they got some from Japan. I have a good stock of + Sonys with the media Code Yuden000-T02 Made in Japan but all the dash media was Made in Taiwan the last time I was there. The MIJ Sonys media are great. The others are ok too but I wouldn't go out of my way to get them.

Kivory666 PM'd me about this thread. I've still only skim-read thru it as it's too early and i need some brain food. However it looks like Sony is something i should read up on and look into. I, like most ppl, love their equipment, new or old stuff, and have used various types of Sony media before, but not any ot their DVD media. Come to think about it i can't remember the last time i saw any anywhere (or many threads anywhere on the internet for that matter... hmmmm...). What i will say is if they're more expensive than Verb's i won't be using any!, however i will go thru this thread and absorb what i can, and make a point of looking out for more Sony info. nice one guys...

Creaky:
I just came home from best buy. They have 50 spindles of Sony 8x + and dash on Sale for 19.99. The + are, if you look, are either MIJ Taiyo Yudens or the Taiwans are Sony I.D. They both scan to be very good media with the advantage going to the TYs+. I won't be buying any soon as I just bought 4 25 spindles of 16x+ Verbs and on the dash side I just recieved 100 TYG-03 from Rima.com. But if you are in need the Sonys are a pretty good deal. Like Kivory666 said don't indict media because it is made in Taiwan. My Verbs are made there and I love them.

From now on I will address you as Mr. Verb. Just kidding. Everytime Best Buy has that 9.99USD for 25 spindle of Verbs 16x + and dash I buy at least 200. My closet is overflowed but I know I will never get a coaster and if I do its not the media.

you're quite right, i still haven't commented on Sony media. Haven't managed to look into it anymore yet. However their burners are top, mine is a rebadged Lite-on (can never remember the model number) and they are great burners. As are NEC's latest and a few other makes. But i do think the Sony media info has all been provided by the other guys whereas i've only ever used their CD media. I will have to look around for somewhere to buy some Sony as my usual place www.svp.com doesn't seem to sell any. Plus i have almost 300 blanks to use up so i doubt i can justify buying more blanks just yet.

I shall see what payday brings :)
