Question about Canopus Procoder Express

I just recently started using this program.
Should it be taking 4 hours to encode a 1 and a half hour movie?
Just wondering :)

What's the source aspect, framerate, and running time?
If the source is smaller aspect, canopus adds time to resize.
If the source is 23.976 and you're going to 29.97, canopus needs time to adjust framerate.
If you're using 2 pass, highQ, canopus doubles the time (as do all encoders).
We need to know all about the source, and how drastic the changes are to the product, as well as the settings you're using to encode.

The source aspect ratio is 4:3 NTSC 29.97 VCD running time is 1:52, 352x480
Im going to DVD NTSC 29.97 4:3 720x480
I have everything set to optimize for speed, I don't have 2 pass enabled.
It took approx 5 hours and 43 minutes to encode.

Have you got an anti-virus program running? Turn it off during encoding. Some like to scan all new files, and so this may be getting scanned as it's encoding, slowing things to a crawl.
Increase the priority of Canopus.
Try the same encode in TMPGEnc, and see what it estimates the time at.

I'm not running virus while i'm encoding. I tried a very similar file in TMPGEnc took about 3 hours.
Can I ask you about copying from VHS to DVD.
Do I just run an S-Video from my VCR to my Hauppauge card?
Then encode?
Im just learning how to do this now.
Maybe if you can direct me to a good "how-to" page that would help.

The canopus thing has me baffled. It should easily be 3 or 4 times faster...
To cap VHS, just run composite for video to the card.
You will have to get a composte to stereo micro (8mm) plug to get audio, which goes from the VCR composite cable to the line in jack on your sound card.
In GBPVR, go into config, recording devices, setup, and change from tuner to "composite".
If you want, you can make another channel in the guide, that uses composite inputs, so you don't have to keep going back into config.
There's some posts on that at gbpvr.com
Sorry, I don't know of any guides on it, because it's fairly simple.

I also used Canopus for several movies under 2 hours with 2 pass VBR enabled and encoding times were between 8-12 hour; not any better than TMPGEnc. Not looking for help; just a comment.

I suppose each encoder may work differently with different hardware.
I'm so used to the speed of mainconcept, that everything else seems painful...but even so, Canopus is still faster than TMPGEnc by a fair bit (on my systems).

I agree. After Mainconcept, it was hard to even give other encoders a chance. The speed is fantastic and the quality out of the box, too. It has taken me some time (still learning) to figure out its various settings but I'm extremely happy with it.

Yes Im happy with MainConcept too - was just briefly having some problems but I think I've worked them out.
