Ok guys, I am super new here, and posted on the XCopy forum so thought I would post here. I have a internal Sony DRU-710A DVD burner in my computer. I have been using Fuji brand DVD-R 8x blank media that I have purchased at Best Buy. I have been trying to make back-up copies of my DVD movie collection using DVD X-Copy Platinum, version 4038. My tabletop Sony DVD player is a new model that can play all types of DVD format (+R, -R, etc). When I burn, I set my recording speed to 4x.
Until recently I had no idea about staying away from Fuji if they state "Made in Taiwan", which the two 100 pack that I bought recently from Best Buy, state that they are. I am going to be taking them back to BB because for the most part, they have burned ok, but playback has been terrible. The screen gets pixelated, skips, sometimes they freeze up or jump chapters.
My questions are as follows: Since I have the DRU-710A (and I just updated the firmware last night), what is the BEST blank DVD media I should be using? I noticed on Sony's website they don't even list Fuji as a compatible brand, but they do list the following:

-Sony Corporation (Disc labeled for use at 4x and 8x speed)
-Verbatim/Mitsubishi(Disc labeled for use at 4x and 8x speed)
-TDK Corporation (Disc labeled for use at 8x speed)
-Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. (Disc labeled for use at 8x speed)

Of these brands, I have never heard of Taiyo Yuden. Is this a brand one can find at a local Best Buy or other retailer? Also, do they license out their technology to other more well known makers such as TDK or Verbatim?

I am going to take back the Fuji ones I have and see if I can get them replaced with something at Best Buy, but will wait until some people here can post their response and opinions.

What speed should I be burning at? Since I have been using the 8x Fuji DVD-R brand, I have been setting the burn speed to 4x. I know not to go to the max burn speed as that causes errors.

Basically I wnat to be able to make back-ups of my DVD movie collection and if need be, watch them and make sure they work fine without having the pixel problem/skipping, etc.

My guess is that the one of the things I am doing wrong is using Fjui made in taiwan discs....but if anyone here can answer my questions, please feel free to post here and I will check often for responses. Thank you!

If you are going to buy retail buy Sony or Verbatim they are first class.

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

But in my opinion Taiyo Yuden are the best disks around. You can purchase these online from several reputable dealers.

http://www.meritline.com

The price you pay for a hundered equals or is sometimes less than retail stores and oftentimes you can get free shipping. You will get more replies on media there are some members who are extremely knowledgeable in this area who will answer :~)

hi k5jon and welcome to AD~ :)

as per your question(s) i TOO have the sony dru-710a (fw BYX4) and i use it daily along with my pioneer 109 as stated in my signature.

you are doing a good job so far in slowing your burning times down to 4x, while i burn ALL my backups @8x, in this case, slower IS better~ :)

my #1 recommendation would be the Taiyo Yudens, with Verbatim closely following as my 2nd choice to you~ as arniebear stated before me, TYs (as they are called short for Taiyo Yuden) are the best media money can buy, i have had countless numbers of flawless burns on TY media in all the tasty flavors rated 4x,8x,16x (media codes are in my signature).

please go with arniebear's suggestion if you choose to buy them online, those are reputable online retailers he mentioned; however, if you want to buy them locally...FEW local retailers will have them (TYs).

nowadays, if you are using the Fuji brand dvd-r 8x as you stated, there is a shortage of the MADE IN JAPAN ones now available, i have yet to find any at best buy since the beginning of the year, they are all made in taiwan now at least LOCALLY for ME personally~ the MIJ Fuji 8x dvd-r are the TYGO2s...genuine Taiyo Yudens, but, the MIT fuji are NOT~ it really depends if you get lucky or not and find the MIJ ones=Taiyo Yudens.

in terms of 8x dvd+r (if you are willing to use them, i personally only use dvd+r now as this sony dru-710a will allow you to booktype them to dvd-rom which is the highest compatibility rate for stand alone players) the Fuji 8x dvd+r MIJ (Made in Japan) and Sony 8x dvd+r MIJ (Made in Japan) are Taiyo Yuden IF you can find them.

that is about the easiest way i can suggest to you about finding some of these TYs locally at stores...best buy/comp usa have been the 2 places i have been able to obtain the TYs under the Fuji and Sony brand names accordingly~ :P

if you have any further questions, please let us know...i hope this provides at least a CLEAR start for you to try some GOOD quality media~ last and final note: find the MADE IN JAPAN on the Fuji/Sony 8x dvd+r locally and you will be fine with some of the BEST media out there, Taiyo Yuden.

you can also try Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003 coded if you decide to try using dvd+r format over the current dvd-r format that you are using~ these will be made in taiwan, just so you know ahead of time.

let us know how it works out for you and have a good one~ good luck :)

wow, i would suggest AGAINST princo media, you are one of the VERY few people who has had luck w/ princo encrypter~ reason i am saying this is based on K5jon's setup, it seems to closely resemble MINE, i have had nothing but problems with princo media as they were the 1st brand i purchased about 3 years ago when i started dvd burning~

i have about 98 coasters now out of a spindle of 100, unreasonably HIGH failure rate for this media~

if it works for you encrypter, i am not going to argue...but, Princo is DEFINITELY a media i WOULD NOT suggest trying...i put princo on par w/ CMC MAG..THE WORST media in the known world~ :)

First off, I want to thank everyone who has taken time out to post in response to my original message, I really apprecaite the feedback. Today I went by Best Buy and returned the Fuji DVD-R packs I had. I went back and checked over their selection of blank media. I checked all the packs of Fuji DVD-R discs and they all stated "made in Taiwan" on them, so I knew not to go that route again. Also, I did notice the Fuji DVD+R tubs were shaped differently and they did say "Made In Japan" on them. Since Fuji isn't listed as a compatible disc with the Sony burner I have, I decided to pass on Fuji all together.
I looked over Verbatim and was going to go that route, but just wasn't sure. Like wise with Sony brand. This week they have the 50 pack of Sony DVD-R or DVD+R on sale for $19.99 each. Where can I look on the packaging to know if they are those TY made discs? I may just do mail order and get those TY discs that people are saying are the best but if I can get them locally I will. Which speed should I get? 8x? 4x? I only saw 8x at Best Buy, in fact, I even say 16x Verbatim there. Regarding Verbatim, I noticed they had a 25 pack stating "1x-4x" on them the outer label was black, and they said "Movie" on them. They resembled a reel of film looking at the top of the case. Are these anything special?
Now that I have my firmware up to date, I really hope my issues were a result of just the type of media I was using. I have to go back and re-burn everything, but I should have found out more about burning before I started.
Now, one more question and this concerns the DVD X-Copy Platinum software that I use to burn. I have only been using the "simple" method and haven't tried the "advance" mode because I don't know what I should select the compression at. Usually anything two hours or under I think I can get away with the simple mode, but, for example, if I want to burn a back-up of the DVD release of the TV show "The Shield", each disc has about four episodes on them...so about 3 hours of video on a single disc. Can I still use the simple mode for this or should I use "advance" and if so....could someone talk me through it here step-by-step on how advance works for something that is longer than two hours long?

THANK YOU!

Also forgot....since I have the Sony DRU-710A burner, what is better to use? DVD+R....or DVD-R? For some reason my Sony burner wouldnt take +R or +RW discs which is why I was only using -R....last night I updated the firmware, but since I don't currently have any blank DVD discs, I haven't been able to try a +R disc.....but was curious which is better to use...the +R or -R?

hi k5,

like i said...i have the same drive as you, i use almost ENTIRELY dvd+r format media~ in terms of the TY to be found locally, the FUJI and SONY dvd+r format is what i use...but, must be MADE IN JAPAN for the them to be Taiyo Yudens~ :P

yes, the cakebox for the fuji's at best buy are different between the made in taiwans and the made in japans..that is another indication of either TYs or not~ the made in japans are a little "fatter" at the base...also, just look for the "made in japan" right above the bar code for further indication of TY material~

the "movie reel" verbatims are nothing special, i've seen those in the 4x...some people have had great success with them, but, i have not personally tried any~ i stick w/ ONLY Verbatim dvd+r 8x media which will code out as MCC003~ terrific media~ :)

also, on this burner, i would suggest using dvdshrink/dvd decrpyter/nero to burn if you want to try something different other than your dvdxcopy platinum~ you can use dvd+r media and BOOKTYPE it to dvd-rom using this drive and those above mentioned software~ only a suggestion, but, those programs are free (dvd shrink and decrypter) Nero is not free, but they have free trial on their website for you to use before you make a purchase on it~ give it a test run~

hope that helps...if you DO take the Verbatim route...they are almost ALL going to be MADE IN TAIWAN...those are just fine...it's the FUJI and SONY you want to find the MADE IN JAPANS for them to be Taiyo Yuden in the dvd+r format~ :)

it's somewhat confusing when you are first starting out to get all these medias/formats/brands/manufacturers sorted, but hang in there...you will be burning like the best of them very soon~ :)

Thanks again for the advice. If you were given a choice of the following, which would you prefer?

Sony DVD+R Made In Japan
Fuji DVD+R Made In Japan
Verbatim DVD+R

or ordering the TY brand direct from one of those websites listed earlier (I believe it was $43 for a 100 pack DVD+R TY brand).

Which would you get and use? You see like you have great success with Verbatim. Do you not use the TY kind? Also, what speed should I get....4x, 8x, 16x?

the Sony and Fuji you have listed are IDENTICAL in terms of quality, they BOTH code out YUDEN000T02 respectively in the dvd+r format MADE IN JAPAN~

i like my Verbatims...the 8x dvd+r are the MCC003 coding that i use VERY regularly~

i will always rank my Taiyo Yudens #1 and Verbatim #2...but, only by a slim margin...they are BOTH great media and you can't go wrong with either~ :)

i use MOSTLY 8x rated TY and Verbatim, while the 16x TYGO3s and MCC004s are GREAT media, i will never burn at that speed, so 8x is more than sufficient for my needs~ i burn @8x on my TY and Verbs, some will suggest slower, but with my quality media, i see no need for this personally~

I have used the Verbatim Movie Reel disks, and find them to be consitent with all Verbatim media. They ID with the MCC002 code and are 4x. I just like them as a change the movie reel is nice to look at. otherwise they burn like any other Verb, great :~)

TY & Verbs, what a cute couple~ :) if those 2 companies ever combined forces, their offspring would be so RIDICULOUSLY good in quality that i would have to re-stock by the thousands~ :)
