is the crc error test the best to know if the dvd is error free?

that is ok, but the best ways in my opinion are transfer speed tests and PI/PIF scan tests.

you have to have a compatible burner to do PI/PIF tests though

...which is where the first link in my signature comes in.

ps that reminds me PIF scans (evin if they state 0 errors) can't be trusted on their own. I did a CRC check on some of the discs also which did show up the errors - it's all in the first link in my sig.

If you have a Lite-on or rebadged Lite-on drive you can use k-probe to do the PIF scans, otherwise you can use dvdinfopro as you have done, also try nreo's cd-dvd speed

you could always try and copy them.

also use dvdinfopro to do a media info check and let us know the media code.

'fraid i don't get errors as my discs are top notch but i've copied no end of discs made on crappy media and the odd one has beaten me due to too many errors.

same as cd's or floppy discs, crc errors are corruption

OMG is all i can say. You have what are considered by most people to be the worst, most appalling discs ever made. They are i'm afraid utter rubbish and you're lucky to only find the odd error.

Check the 2nd link in my signature, and then have a look thru the first link.

i believe the hardware is ok, as are CD's made my companies such as these. It's the DVD's that they don't make well.

I don't know much about Maxell DVD's as haven't used any myself.

snippet from http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431 -

Maxell DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Maxell DVD+R 4x (YUDEN000T01)
Maxell DVD+R 8x High Grade Video (MAXELL002)
Maxell DVD-R 1x (RITEKG03....)
Maxell DVD-R 2x (MXL RG01....)
Maxell DVD-R 4x (MXL RG02....)
Maxell DVD-R 4x (TYG01.......)
Maxell DVD-RAM 3x (MXL8)
Maxell DVD-RW 2x (MCC 01RW11n9)
Maxell DVD-RW 2x (TDK502sakuM3)

not an up to date list but looks good. There's some very good media codes listed there.

there's also some v good info here - http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

and here - http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?dvdmediasearch=maxell&dvdme...

what's the exact name of your burner, it may well be a rebadged drive anyway as most companies rebadge other people's equipment anyway

@pixie

good luck on your memorex to maxell discs...i HOPE they will still rip properly for the transfer to begin :P

rebadged means a company BUYS a product from a manufacturer and puts THEIR own name on it~ the internals are produced by LITE-ON (as per your example) but, are "Rebadged" (re-labeled) Memorex for Memorex as a company to sell under THEIR own name~ :)

you SHOULD be ok hypothetically, unless those CMC MAGS have degraded so much over time that you will not be able to get a proper "rip" from them to your harddrive to begin the backups onto your maxell~ i wish you the best of luck...keepin my fingers crossed for you pixie~

@pixiestix - sorry i did mean to explain if more fully, but was fighting my eyelids. Kivory666 has hit the nail on the head there. It's good you found the CRC problem early on so you might be able to salvage enough of your stuff

For the maxell/ritek dvds - go with other ppl's comments as i can only post what i find, i haven't used either.

For memorex/CMC MAG, ANYTHING is better :)

Burning at 4x (for movies) gives less chance of error even on a properly setup, fast system with top quality media, 4x takes all of 15mins to burn a disc, 8x as little as 8mins, it's not worth the supposed speed saving
