Just now trying to learn about DVD burning... so bare with my noob questions plz.

Looking at getting the NEC ND-3520A
http://www.xpcgear.com/necnd3520a.html
because it has Dual-layer ablities (backing up HDD). Not sure what the diffrence is with the DVD+R DL & DVD-R DL...

I'm wanting to back-up DVD Movies as well, after going through the threads i see you can rip, then compress a full-size dvd to fit onto a 4.7G DVD (which you can cut out additional featchers to get better quality video)... but what about the 8.5G DL DVD's? all you would need to do is RIP and burn without compressing, correct? and will normal DVD movie players (for TV/VCRs) be able to read the DL DVD's the same?

Also, I see many diffrent ripping, compressing, and buring softwares all over this forum... are there any imperticular that are better/easier then others?

Thanks all for the help!

integraol,
Welcome to the forum. Below you will find a guide for using DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink ( both free). I suggest you start w/ the fairly simple program first and then you can try the other programs if you want. You might also want to Purchase Nero and AnyDVD. Nero has a lot of useful programs included and AnyDVD is another ripper ( works in the background). Nero is approx $69.00-99.00 and AnyDVD is approx. $39.00. Read the guide below and then print the info so that you will be able to burn.
To do D/L disks I use DVDDecrypter (mode>iso read , Mode>iso write)Since these disks are fairly expensive you might want to stick to the less expensive DVD-5's. Also you will need to purchase Verbatim blank media as they and the Taiyo Yudens are considered Superior blank media. W/ my burner I can bitset the + disks ( tricks the computer into thinking the disk is a DVD-Rom so it is more compatitable w/ the standalone players) so you might want to make sure that you can bitset the NEC

integraol: welcome aboard. Car.Mike has given you some great information to get you started. There's a lot to absorb but someone is always here at AD to answser your questions.

There are a lot of good burners out there and the one you mentioned NEC3520 is the one I have (and many other forum users have) and it is great. I ordered mine from Newegg which has low prices and super service. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152039
The 3520 cannot be booktyped or bitset with its original firmware but can be with modified firmware. Flashing firmware has risks but few have problems. Along this same price range and capabilities, others might suggest the BENQ1620 which I believe can be bitset.

Decide on a burner, read and heed what Car.Mike gave you, and then post further questions.

Again, welcome aboard...

good info, thanks guys...

i've actually already got Nero 6, i'll have to go try and find AnyDVD...

Question: both of you are referring to BITSETing... what is bitseting and why do you need to do it on the burners?

Also, with the NEC, if I do go with it, how do you go about Flashing the firmware? same procedure as flashing the bios on a mobo?

Thanks again!

integraol ,
Bitsetting is like I told you in the previous thread I did:
" ( tricks the computer into thinking the disk is a DVD-Rom so it is more compatitable w/ the standalone players) "
Flashing the Burner is very similiar to the MOBO flashing. You will most likely use the Win version. It is fairly simple to do.

You also might if in doubt seek LABOY's advice further on the modified firmware site and its addy. You can PM him for the addy and I am sure he will help you

ahh ok, so the + discs are the only discs that can me read by a standard DVD Player... but it must be Bitset. is that correct?

and if so, then what is the purpose of the - discs?

Also, i've been searching for the "BENQ1620"... but i can't find an dealer that sells it... and won't you eventually have to flash the firmware on the BENQ1620 as well for updates?
if so, then both the BENQ1620 and ND-3520A are the same... correct?

Thanks again guys!

DVD Players can read both if enabled to do so. All you are doing is tricking the DVD Player into thinking the disk is a DVD-Rom. The - blank media is usually more compatible w/ the older DVD Players.
You should always update the firmware for the burners but the burners you mention are the different. My Recommendation is to buy the NEC

Integraol: standalone dvd players will play all commercial DVDs which are generally booktyped as DVD-ROM and many will play home made DVDs in the + or - format (but many standalones have an affinity toward either the + or the - format).. Bitsetting or booktyping (interchangeable terms) allows you to change the + format booktype to the DVD_ROM booktype thereby allowing it to be played on most all standalones. That's why many look for burners that will allow booktyping/bitsetting in order to increase their chances that their standalone will indeed play what they have burned.

If you decide to go with the NEC, you can flash it with modified firmware found here:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=139533
Follow their instructions; but simply download the firmware, double click to open and follow their instructions about flashing, and restart the computer. Presto and your done...
As far as the BENQ1620, Newegg should have them because a friend of mine just ordered one about a week ago. Check here at this site:

Hey all, i'm back...

I finally ordered up the NEC ND-3520A and will update the firmware so that i can bitset with DVD+R's...(to make them look like DVD_ROMs) :)

Question, because the DL DVD+R's are so expensive right now (compared to the SL).. i'll be using the SL's for most all of my DVD Movie back-up's (using the suggusted Nero and ANYDVD) Now, are there any perticular Brands of DVD+R's I should be looking to get?

I remember back when CD-R's first came out i've had problems with certian brands... so I'm asuming it's the same way with the DVD+R's now?

Thanks again all!

integraol,
Welcome back. Here is my list of favorite +R's
1. TY or Fuji 8x (made in Japan) code out as Yuden 000-T02
2. Verbatim 8X(made in Taiwan) code out as MCC003
3. Maxell 8X (made in Taiwan)code out as Mxl R02

All of the above are excellent quality. Be careful to set your burning speed, because all of the above will burn 12X or 16X on the NEC 3520.

understood... not a problem with the burning speed... even when i make a regular cd-r Music disk i only burn at 4x's max... i've always thought the slower the better quality of burn and less chance for bits to be lost.

Thanks again! i'm sure i'll be back on here next week after i install the burner :)

great, now i have a list of 4 brands to try and find on-sale :)

Question: I recently downloaded a movie (Original is 2 DVD Disk set) and the file sizes are Disk 1: 609MB Disk 2: 662MB
They are in AVI format.

Now do I just use Nero to burn them right to a DVD... or can i de-compress them to make them a better quality... then burn to DVD?

I thought a "compressed" DVD (for 1 disk) would usually be about 2-4GB. So being that the downloaded files are only around 630MB, i dont know.

Thanks again all!

ok, I just now recieved AnyDVD (i've already had Nero)... I see that AnyDVD only Unprotects all DVD's. Now do I need Clone DVD2 to rip it off the DVD so that I can copy the DVD onto a DVD+R?

Thanks again all... please bare with the noob. lol

AnyDVD will work in the background with almost all encoding and compressing programs. Since you have Nero, it will work with Nero Recode, it will also work with Shrink, a freeware program.

Well i recieved the 3520A today, and installed in-place of my old CD-R burner (set both as masters)...
When I boot the PC it sees the drives, then after the boot process it attempts to read the CD Drives for a bootable CD (which it should), but then it stalls at the 3520A drive... and sits there. Windows never comes on.

The drive was set to Auto Detection in the BIOS... so i set it to NONE... reboot... does not see the drive and goes to Windows just fine... but Windows sees the drive! And i just burned a CD-RW with it.

What is going on here?

Thanks again all!
