For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

It still relies on some external codecs, do you have FFDShow and Xvid?

It doesn't require either. VLC includes libavcodec already, plus some of the other libs that FFDShow uses (libdts came from VLC), not sure if it also includes XviD, but that shouldn't matter.

Black screen sounds like a direct-x/overlay issue.
