I've found a few other threads in other forums but none of the suggestions there have solved my problem, so I thought I would try here.

I'm attempting to back up my PS2 games. Up until yesterday, it was going well. I've been using Taiyo Yuden (TYG02..not fakes) on my LITE-ON SOHW-1673S drive. It has the latest firmware JS07. All was well. Games were backing up just fine and so were movies. Yesterday, I started making coasters with DVD Decrypter. I tried burning a movie with CopyToDVD SE (which I never have any problems with) and it too made a coaster. I've only had this drive a few weeks and I've backed up probably 20 discs with it without any problems. Since yesterday...6 coasters.

I also have a BenQ DW1610 that has no problems burning movies, but it's no good at backing up PS2 games. The LITE-ON was getting that job done admirably.

The only change recently made to my system was an auto-update of security patches from MS, and I upgraded DVD4Free to the latest version. I don't normally run it because Decrypter does it all much better, but with the demise of DVD Decrypter I thought it best to have a backup. Just in case.

I've reflashed the f/w to the drive 3 times now without any differences. I still get coasters. I've also tried some RiTek DVD-R that I normally use for movies (RG05) and got the same results. The message I get from DVD Decrypter when it fails is:

I/O Error:
Device: [1:0:0] LITE-ON SOHW-1673S JS07 (E:)(ATA)

Interpretation: Cannot Write Medium - Incompatible Format

The failed sectors happens for any ISO I try to burn and doesn't matter what kind of media. I sometimes get a different SrbStatus, but the Sense Area interpretation is the same and the sectors it fails on are the same.

My system is an HP Pavillion A220N in which I've changed both optical drives. That's an AMD 2600+, 512MB, 120GB HD.

Here's the log from DVD Decrypter:

I am at a loss as to what the problem could be. My TY and my RG work fine in my BenQ drive so it's not the media. I have the latest f/w and have burnt with it before. I tried uninstalling DVD4Free in case the new version caused some incompatibility and that didn't make a difference. I have enough coasters. I don't need anymore. Any ideas are greatly welcome!

why are you running with a fairly high spec pc with FAT32 formatted drive? have you got 2 hardrives?
convert to ntfs
check the dma settings

but whats that got to do with the lite-on?,it obviously doesnt like the disk type you are using, just because they work on another, doesnt mean they will read in the lite-on drive, although they are good media,> it is not happy with them, flashing the drive constantly cant be good, especially if you are using non, official firmaware,in which case you may have trashed the drive(i doubt, but its a possiblity)
check the above first, then go from there

After looking at that log i think it may be the FAT32 system.
Although i am not sure the other games worked.
If you have 2 hard drives, and use one of them just as storage i would convert it over to NTFS. I know i had problems when my drive was running FAT32
Also i will ask a few questions that others can answer that may solve the problem.

when you put in the game XENOSAGA_II, look in the DVD Decrypter box. Does it tell you how many layers it is? Make sure it is not 2

Also, Hursty. Can you post him up those screen shots of your DVD Decrypter settings. I see he has burn proof enabled, i do not remember checking that box on mine...is that right?

I have never had the incompatible media error, and i have been using DVD Decrypter for a little over a year now.

xenosaga is on 2 dvd's,so 1 layer on each

burn proof is enabled

its nothing to do with DVD Decrypter, its the burner not agreeing with the disk's
are you 100% certain they are not fakes?

must be a very touchy burner, or some real crappy media.
I have put in TDK,Philips,Macell,Memorex, & Imation
and have never had that error with my Sony DRU-700A

Wish i could be more help on this one, but if it is a media problem that is sort of a hit or miss (trial and error) situation
You will just have to buy small packs of media, like 3 packs, and find a brand that works with that burner every time.

My system is still FAT32 because that's how it came out of the box and I've never had a need to change it before. There's only one drive with 2 partitions. I've checked both burners and they are both set to DMA. As for the drive being picky about the media, I chose this drive because I heard it was a good one, especially for DVD-R. The spindle of TY and RiTek media I have had no problems on the LITE-ON drive. I've used both with no problems and went through probably half a spindle without errors. Now it's nothing but coasters. I've got some DVD+R DL media but there's no way I'm going to experiment with those until I get this burner working again with the DVD5 blanks.

The firmware is official (came from the liteonit.com site), but I don't think flashing it again will make a difference. All games successfully backed up with the LITE-ON drive work flawlessly in my PS2, including a couple of CD-R based ones. Any games backed up with the BenQ don't work, so I know LITE-ON is much better at writing DVD-R than BenQ is. I've read that in other forums as well which is why I chose LITE-ON.

I uninstalled DVD4Free and DVD Decrypter and then re-installed DVD Decrypter (which apparently fixed up an ASPI problem I had according to the Nero Info Tool). Decrypter is using the default settings, except that I always write ISO images at 4x. I made another coaster so I put DVD4Free back on. I don't run both at the same time BTW.

I used KProbe to check the discs and from what I've read in other forums, they are legit. I'll try some DVD+R tonight and see what happens. I saw in another forum where someone had a similar problem where there drive stopped working with DVD-R but would work with DVD+R.

I doubt that FAT32 vs. NTFS is the problem since all was well earlier. I'll try disabling the OS burn settings (saw in another forum) and try DVD+R and let you know the results.

uninstall then reinstall the drive.make sure the ide cable is inserted all the way and check the cable for pinching or damage(or switch out for other cable).i had problems with ide cables where the device would still work but had glitches.

Thanks for the tip on the cable. I'll check that out as well and post results. This is frustrating to say the least.

Well, I uninstalled and reinstalled the drive. No luck. I got another TYG02 coaster with the same failure. I burned an audio CD as a test and that worked. I then tried a Verbatim DVD+R and while it burned okay my PS2 won't recognize it (RSOD). I also picked up some Maxell DVD+R and the first one I put in the drive made some ugly grinding noise so I took it out and put it back in. It read the disc okay (KProbe showed it to be okay anyway) so I tried that. Same result as the Verbatim. What I find interesting is that DVD-R never made it past the "Writing Lead-in" stage. It would sit there for about 3 mins or so and the device buffer never filled up. With a DVD+R it filled up the device buffer and moved on to "Writing image" in under a minute.

My PS2 is a v5/6 so I know it's supposed to support DVD+R. My mod chip (a ChipMod from modchip.ca) is supposed to handle anything including DVD9. They claim it's better than the Magic chips. My next task I guess is to switch my book type to DVD-ROM and see if the PS2 likes DVD+R that way. I still don't understand why I can no longer burn DVD-R on my LITE-ON drive when it was working before. Could it be a drive problem? Should I consider taking it back and exchanging it or getting some warranty work done? I could try the drive in another computer this weekend and perhaps rule out WinXP as the culprit. The other computer has Win2K on it. I am very leary about trying a backup to DVD+R DL media. I picked up some Dynex brand (media code is MCC002 I think...I know it was MCC something so I know it's good). They were cheap at Best Buy so why not try, but with my burner problems that's an expensive test.

it might have been all those times you flashed your drive.anytime you flash a device you take a risk of messing it up.there have been people who messed their drives up by flashing it even with the correct firmware.and you said you flashed your drive several times.

Well, after switching the book type to DVD-ROM I managed to backup both Xenosaga II discs and they both boot. Then I tried to backup .hack//quarantine using the same media (Maxcell) and it won't boot. According to DVD Decrypter it burned okay though. I don't know why my PS2 would like the same media for two discs but not a third, but they are rather picky.

Anyway, I'm going to exchange the drive. I wouldn't think flashing the firmware would damage the drive. The business I'm in involves flashing firmware on a regular basis and our devices can handle thousands of flash operations without any problems. I guess not all devices are made the same way... Pity.

well it seems you know what you are doing when you flash your drive.the people i noticed damaging their drives were newbies who never done it before.they had the right firmware but somehow flashed their drive and destroyed it.i have flashed a bios before (and was crossing my fingers the whole time) but never a dvd drive.

I found on a discussion forum on the LITE-ON site that the JS07 firmware has mixed results and that upgrading to it can cause bad things to happen. I doubt I can fix this so it'll go back to the store just as soon as I locate that receipt.
