Yes, you can backup PS2 games like normal DVDs. Simply read the game image at a slow enough speed(8x, I suppose) to your HDD. Then just burn the image from your HDD to a HIGH QUALITY DVD+/-R at a slow enough speed(NO MORE THAN 4X!!!) In your case I am pretty sure it is just bad media. I suggest you use Taiyo Yuden manufactured media; I do and have no problems. You do NOT need to patch the games. You may or may not need to rebuild them, but I am no expert in that field.
You say you use DATAWRITE? That is Verbatim(MCC manufactured) right? I, myslef have had problms playing backups on Verbatim discs. Once you switch over to genuine Taiyo Yuden media your problems should stop.

What i was saying was that ahem downloading ahem PS2 games is illegal. Now if he were to download a game, and then get prosecuted for it, we would have been considered as aiding him in the crime. Then, because I couldn't help him, I told him to google his question, and then not to be fooled by paysites SUCH AS supernova.com. Jeezus is that so hard to understand.

that brings up an interesting question.if you told someone to go jump off a bridge and they did it,would you then be an accessory to murder? (just trying to expand on the theory)
