Hi, I got some GENERIC DVD-R's and ran DVD Identifier and it said that the manufacturer name was Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd. Is that good enough to make backups of PS2 Games with???

not necessarily, TY are the most faked media. Surely the media isn't actually called 'generic' ?

oh i see, (thats the trouble with the word 'generic' lol, dunno if its a genuine name or if you mean no-name)

there are however ways to verify these discs. I'm gonna blatantly refer to Mister TY himself (kivory666), well his posts anyway -

The answer to your original question is yes (if the disks are original TY). You probably won't get a better disk to backup PS2 games to, but you'll need to ensure that you keep the burn speed down to a minimum for best results. You may already know what software to use, but if not, then try DVD Decrypter. If after this, they don't work, then you have probably got a batch from someone else.

The 'TYG02' code is not sufficient on it's own to prove these are genuine. Pls look at the two links i posted further up the page (there should be codes around the inner hub of the discs that will confirm whether or not these discs are genuine

the media code is still not sufficient, more help hopefully coming shortly. In the meantime re-read those links and all will become clear.

hello, just got the PM from my buddy creaky, from what your telling me, you got your hands on some FAKES...unless you can find a LONGER number that starts with GGxxxxxxxxx, TGxxxxxxxxx, TTxxxxxxxxx or GDxxxxxxxx (with the "x" being numbers, some less numbers, some are more...but they all start with a 2 letter prefix)

i have some FAKE ty's here right now and the coding on the inner hub is as FOLLOWS : -r8x dh-05-19 314 0109

a REAL TY code i have here is : GD000535 this is for a 4x TY dvd-r

please check to see if you have any OTHER numbers faintly inscribed on the inner hub~ based on the info you provided, i have a strong hunch they are FAKES~ reason for this is, your dvd identifier scan is IDENTICAL to my own FAKE TY scan~ that is why i ALWAYS mention that a software media code identifier is NOT a sure fire way to tell authenticity of particular media~

i have 2 sets of fake TYs actually, one of them after scanning the media ID is IDENTICAL to yours...they are 8x dvd-r as well~ TYGO2 coding, but i KNOW for a fact MINE were made in TAIWAN, i can assure you right here and now that NO AUTHENTIC TAIYO YUDEN will EVER be manufactured in Taiwan~ that last statement was verified by a Taiyo Yuden North America representative that i have regularly been in contact with since i joined AD, straight from the horses mouth you could say~ :)

unless you can provide more numbers for me daviel100, i will have to say you got yourself some FAKE TYs unfortunately~ :(

WOAH~ i would use your FAKE TYs OVER the CMC MAGS~ ahhhhhhhhhhhh~ RUN DAVIEL RUN~!!

hehehe.

as bad as fake TYs might be, since i know firsthand how horrible and inconsistent MY FAKE TYs are...i would still rate them higher than anything made by CMC MAGs...they are definitely the BOTTOM OF THE RUNG...i would consider actually putting a small pizza into my burner before i ever use another CMC MAG~

yes, if you can't already tell, i really dislike that trash media they call CMC MAG~ :)

good luck daviel~ since you're having some bad luck w/ getting your hands on FAKE TYs...might you consider trying some good quality Verbatims? there aren't any "fake ones" that i know about just yet...it's a good time to try some good ole' MCC = Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp. ones~ that would be MY personal suggestion if you've been shocked by the whole FAKE TY thing~

keep the burn speed right down (i don't do PS2 backups myself even though i have a PS2, but i read it's best to keep the speed right down, maybe even a shocking 1 or possibly 2speed)

well, i guess the only way you could ACTUALLY tell if your fakes/other media is good enough for your backups, is to actually TRY them out...bear in mind, i would suggest burning at a VERY low speed...4x or even slower if your burner allows it~ that is the ONLY way i can think of to actually "test" to see if they are good enough to play~ how long will they LAST after burning, IF they will even play...that is a completely different subject altogether~ :)
