I recently updated to the new firmware version for my Sony DRU 710A burner (BYX04) in order for it to read and write on Memorex 16x DVD-R's. Now everything has been working fine, I managed to even spit out a couple of DVD's using the newly firmware'd burner and the Memorox DVD-R's. Until today...

I've been doing a little bit of Googling and found people with similar problems, so I decided to try a couple of solutions...
- Uninstalling packet software...
- Turning off the DMA then...
- Reupdating the firmware
- Switching to different media (Fujifilm DVD-R 8x)

I should mention that I've went through about 10 of these 16x DVD-R's before actually giving up and posting here. :(

I used to use Memorex DVD-R 8x before the firmware update and I had no problems at all. I know the Sony DRU 710A is really sensitive to cheap media, which is why I've only bought Sony, until my friend gave me a couple of Memorex and Maxell DVD's and they all seemed to burn fine for months.

Here is the DVD Decrypter log...

I also tried burning a CD-R using the same drive and it seems to work fine, but it appears to be significantly slower.

Any ideas? Is my burner phsyically burnt out? Any help would be much appreciated before I go stark mad because this burner is only about 6 months old...

I actually was able to burn CD-R's fine now, with no detectable slow down on my part.

But my DVD-R's are still not getting through.

i have the same drive as you and my only suggestion would be to use BETTER QUALITY MEDIA, Taiyo Yuden or Verbatims would be my top 2 suggestions...i am betting that even those high speed 16x memorex are made by the dreaded CMC MAG manufacturer~

i've had this burner for well over a year and i updated to that firmware over a month ago, MEDIA issue here UNLESS you have a faulty drive, but i don't think this is the case~ :)

check my sig. for MEDIA recommendations...this Sony drive LOVES the 8x dvd-r or 8x dvd+r Taiyo Yudens and the same goes for the Verbatim 8x dvd+r too~ countless flawless burns on both types of media~ i've also used a few of the TYGO3s which are the 16x dvd-r TYs as well as the MCC004s which are the Verbatim 16x dvd+r media. :)

hope your burns get better once the media issue is resolved~ :)

@Unaware,

I'm with kivory666 on this. I've had my SONY DRU 710A BYX4 since November 2004 and it has been burning flawlessly. Sony doesn't take any craps and or garbages.

yup, ive got the previous model - DRU-700A (rebadged Lite-on), loves Verbatim like there's no tomorrow. Not that i'm biased or anything :)

I'll pretend i didn't see the CMC Mag discs being used there!

Thanks for the advice, I went out and bought a Verbatim pack and Sony spindles.

I tried both new Sony 8x DVD-R (SONY08D1) and Verbatim Datalife 8x DVD-R (MCC02RG20)...both of which are no longer CMC MFG. I'd buy TY's online, but I fear that I'll end up with a pile of discs that are just going to end up the same way.

Still producing the same errors

So are we thinking dead drive?

If there were problems with the buffer? Would this occur? I ask because at times, whenever a movie is either burning or being ripped, someone else would come and use the computer and run programs like ACDSee, Photoshop, etc. at the same time -- does this effect the physical performance of the drive? For example, strain it enough so it malfunctions like this? Any other solutions?

I'm at a loss on what to do.

- erm, YES, kick them off, you don't want stuff going on during the burn, especially heavy stuff like Photoshop. How much RAM have you got ?. Plus any hard drive activity can upset the burns.

I have 480MB of RAM, these latest trials with the failed burns have been with DVD Decrypter only running by itself. I'm kind of kicking myself, because the problem only seemed to hop up when I got those darn Memorex 16x discs and updated the firmware in order to be able to write on them.

I noticed that when it burns it doesn't even go beyond a writing speed of (0.1x)

I 13:18:06 Average Write Rate: 0 KB/s (0.0x) - Maximum Write Rate: 144 KB/s (0.1x)

And then it just goes back down to zero...

I'm about ready to give in. :-p

I have the same problem with my LITE-ON 1673S. It was burning fine, then overnight it decided it didn't like DVD-R and I feed it the good stuff (TYG02, RG05, Maxcell, Vertbatim). I get the same errors from DVD Decrypter that you're getting. Fails during the lead in phase. I found that mine will burn CD-R and DVD+R but not DVD-R. Maybe see if you have the same problem. I've found through other forums for LITE-ON that their latest firmware (JS07) is not so hot. Maybe your new firmware is the problem?

it seems to me there might be some hardware conflict problems after you mentioned continued problems w/ the drive...the slow burns might be that your comp. resorted back to PIO mode after many errors caused by the memorex media~ switch it back to DMA mode or make sure it is enabled~

secondly, your firmware should NOT be the issue as i've had no problems at all since i've updated the firmware for this drive.

im still thinking about other possible solutions, but that is what i can gather off the top of my head so far...worse comes to worse...your drive is going bad..but, let's not do an RMA just yet, that should be your last resort. :P

I agree with that why dont you try going back to the firmware you had last time BY03, I will also recommend trying Nero to discard a software problem, well about the DRU-710A mine accepts anything and burns them really good (I got some weird swimex media, and burn them 100%, also some princo 4x and burn a 100% and it even played of my DVD with almost no skips!!!,) My sony even likes garbage, Ive never got a media problem (only some weird mini dvd issue), it seems the problem started when you updated your firmware so as I posted above try to flash it with an older one, also did you follow the intruction provided in order to update firmware (disable the intel ultra ata driver, but if your amd forget it) GL, I dont think the drive may be dying, mine is a warrior although tortured some times with bad media, he always wins the fight ;)

i just looked over those other programs starting while ripping/burning...photoshop and even acdsee are pretty memory intensive, photoshop especially like creaky mentioned...are you using those programs while burning or they just automatically start for some strange reason when you are ripping or burning? if they start automatically, there might be some sort of spyware or trojan on your computer if they just start by themselves without you making a command~ i suggest using ad-aware to rid your system of those things, it's free and can be easily obtained by doing a simple google search or from download.com~ i don't know if that will help any in terms of giving you better burns, but it might~ i run my ad-aware like 10x/day just to make sure my comp isn't infested w/ those tracking cookies/spyware. :)

@kivory:
No, no, I'm pretty keen on keeping my computer virus/adware free. I'm pretty obsessive when it comes to updating to the latest definitions and whatnot. All my latest trials with the failed burns are done with only DVD Decrypter running by itself, no other programs opening or running. And DMA was indeed enabled, I made sure.

@paztelu:
I have an AMD.

How do I rollback to the previous version of the firmware?

What bugs me the most is that when I updated the firmware, it burned about 3-4 discs just fine. Then this started happening...to everything, even the better media you all suggested. I have so many "coasters" it's not even funny. :-p

Take it from me, dump Memorex now. :-p

i'll let the others sort you out with the firmware.

I have one rule when burning. i leave the internet running, virus checkers too etc, however i don't surf or do anything myself that would trigger the hard disc to start churning. Sometimes i've had a few browsers open before i started a burn, so thought it won't hurt. then whichever websites i went on caused loads of activity and caused my Nero buffers to go wonky. I either had a skipping disc on playback (v rare for me as i don't break these rules anymore) or a 'PIF' disc scan would show up where the buffers struggled during the burn. (the disc would play fine, but the scan highlighted where the burner had to struggle more if that makes sense)

Get a file with the older firmware and Flash it with it, also have you touched your hardware (I mean opened the case to check the drive) maybe there is a hardware problem, so check for dust make sure the jumper is correct the cable is correct ;)

I flashed back to my old firmware version, and tried to burn another disc with DVD Decrypter and still no luck.

However, here is a ray of hope, I burned a data DVD-ROM disc with Ahead Nero and it burned fine. Completed the process, no slow-down, speed as expected.

Diagnostic? It's probably the DVD Decrypter right?

Will it help to reinstall it or what?

Take it from me, dump Memorex now. :-p

reinstalling decrypter would be a good idea, it certainly can't hurt...

As for Nero, even though it worked, it may give us some clues that we can fix anyway.

Nero logfile is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log

- DON'T post the serial number(s) whoch are at the beginning of file, usually beginning with '1A21' or similar. Also, the logfile is appended to by all burns, good and bad, so only post the last section, ie last burn......
