I was just told by a salesperson that these discs that we use to burn on will eventually rot and not work anymore within a few years possibly! Does anyone know about this? Do all the discs go bad eventually or whats the deal?? Thanks.

It really depends on the quality of the discs you are buying. Some lower grade manufacturers use a poor quality dye to make their discs, and there have been reports of deterioration with a relatively short lifespan of the disc. Higher quality manufacturers tend to use better dyes that don't degrade as quickly and last longer.

Right, they last longer but still deteriate within 5 years or so? Is this the same with real dvds that are purchased and not copied?? I hope not.

I could not find the post but a couple of months ago i read this in a post here on afterdawn that dvd-r sholud live 100 years .I also agree with ziyppd quality is evrything not only on this subject but for so many other reasons. Althought it does suck because thier is so much reading on this who do you believe http://www.verbatim.com.au/products.cfm?ID=95048&technoteID=1115

That link is helpful Slmh, i only wonder how true it is, and especially how long the life expentency is on other types of media. I have never used Verbatim, although I do try to get the highest quality. Most of mine are Taiyo Yuden printables and Maxell dvd-r. I'm also wondering if there is a way to know when they are starting to go bad before its too late to transfer them.

Yea I've been wondering about the same thing. I'm sure that if you use high quality meadias such as Ritek, Verbs and TY you should have no problems and the media should work for a long time. My opinion is that the less you use the media the longer it will last, becuase the reading laser may eventually dry out a part of the DVD. One thing that puzzled me once tho, was that some Ritek DVD-Rs are made with Organic Dye, so wat does this mean? Is it biodegradable ;)

maybe with the other media see if you can locate a tech doc like the verb .I just thought of something Ive got some old backed up software and music that is 7 to 8 yrs old and still works and their maybe some truth to what skidme said the less you use the longer it will last that's true with most things think of pepole still using a WIN95 cd Ive used it just for kicks and it works 10yrs later. On the the organic dye im not sure i would say it would probably last a shorter time but that is just a quess.I guess time will tell LOL.Ya know that thier will be some new format in less than 10yrs so will have to start all over again anyways f**cking corparate pirates. oh lets put out this 50 year old movie and make a killing all over again thier should be laws against that or at least a discount for the upgrade to the new media.Oh well that was fun

Yep I'm pretty sure that my theory makes sense, as that link slmh1296 posted says that the life of the DVD decreases at higher temperatures. When the DVD is read by a laser, that obviously heats it up. I guess theoretically you could probably watch a movie once a week for 50 years without any loss in quality(just for the higher quality DVDs). Interesting stuff

Besides not using these discs in the player that often, what else can I do to make them last longer, keep them in the freezer? I mean, I don't know how to keep them at a lower temp.

i guess you live somewhere hot then. I don't (UK) so the most we'd EVER get is 100F or so. If anything ihave the opposite to worry about as i live on a boat and my discs are kept in 240-capacity wallets. All well and good but they're kept on the floor, which is below the waterline. However i've never read anything about cold affecting them, even the odd bit o' condensation

Even when the boat (it's steel and mainly black so absorbs a lot o' heat) is in direct sunlight it's not 'too' hot indoors

No, no dont keep the discs in the freezer. Temperature extremes will affect the DVDs negatively. Just keep them at room temperature if possible(around 25C, or 74F) and they should outlive you. The most important thing is to not get scratches on the disc surface, and you do that by keeping the discs in jewel cases, or wallets. I personally keep my DVDs in cake boxes(covered of course, wouldn't want them to get dusty) and they keep nicely.
@creaky-you live on a boat? ah maybe someday i will too....

Ah what can I say. Thats pretty awesome. I have a question tho. You 've got broadband right? Do u have to connect a cable to the boat to be connected or is there something like a central wireless router stationed at the dock? I can't imagine boating and downloading stuff at the same time. Oh interesting idea- when you need media you can just boat on over to Japan and get some TYs lol.

@skidme - yup, i got broadband now. you can get wireless b/band, but i got a normal phone line and my firm rebrands a b/band service so i got free b/band access on the premise of dialling up for work (i support all the Unix servers) (my b/band is 512k down, 128k up). more than quick enough for me).
Good point, as every couple years the boat has to come out the water (sometimes for weeks/months at a time due to sheer cost of cranage in/out for repainting the bottom of boat). Someone i know showed me an 'air card' or similar, basically a laptop card with 2 types of communication. One type was GPRS, same as my Blackberry, but the other type i can't remember the name of. I'd be lost without my net connection now as work monitors our surfing (at work) and i'd be in loadsa trouble with my afterdawn posting as it is, never mind double the amount due to catching up from overnight posts due to no access out of hours!.

I could probably get to Japan for the TY's, but i can only do 5miles an hour so aliens will be found before i ever get there, it'd be like Planet of the Apes or something, i'd be lost at sea or something for years on end; i could be the new Christopher Columbus lol!.

Ah you'd have to abstain from AD for some time if that ever hapenned. cant jeopardize work. As for the repainting of the boat, is that really necessary? The paint keeps the boat from rusting right?
Note to self: If I ever get a boat it will be made of wood

Fiberglass, eh? Good idea. It might cost a bit too much but probaby well worth it. Altho when the paint comes off the boat will be see through LMAO. Wouldnt wanna be lost at sea in a see-through boat.

lol, kevlar seems to be a word synonimous (never used the word so don't know how to spell it!) with afterdawn.

mine's made of steel so every couple years or so you have to get a £1000-a-day crane to lift you out so you can clean the previous 2yrs bitumen and crap and wildlife off, to enable you to put up to 3 new coats of bitumen to fend off the oxygen for next 2 years. It's a real slow thankless job, i'm usually drubk when i do it as 55ft each side, of about 2odd foot high from bottom to waterline, pi$$es you off after the 2nd or 3rd day :)

i''d rather live in steel than wood anyday!
