hey, i'm just getting into backing up my DVD's, but have come accross a possible small problem. i use dvd shrink 3.2 to compress the video, that all goes fine and the files work without a problem. i then put the files onto a dvd-r and play the disc in my player. its all fine except for one thing, when the dvd gets to the end it starts to jump and skip a little, with pop noises sounding, not much to really put you off but irritating all the same. i was beginning to think the file dvd had been copied with an error, but when i rewound and played the same bit, the jump was in a different place, and when i play the dvd on my computer it works fine. i have looked at similar posts and they have said it is down to the dvd-media, well this is a possibility cos im only using bulkpaq dvd-r's which didnt cost me a lot, but the posts said to use more expenisive ones, and i have used datawrite and had a similar problem.

Three things can help you:
1. Use high quality media, e.g. TY or Verbatim
2. Set target size to 4300mb when burning
3. Burn at 4X or less

ill av to give verbatim a go, cos if i make the dvd image to 4300mb then wouldnt that mean compressing the dvd even more? and changing speeds probably wouldnt help cos my rewriter only goes upto 4x cos its a couple of years old. with recent dvds ive made, ive made them a 2x but have yet to watch them so that could help.

Dropping the target size down to 4300mb would increase the compression rate compared to a full disk at about 4450 mb, but only about 1% or 2%-- less risk though than writing on outer rim.

My gut feeling is that your problem will be solved by changing media..Bulpaq is not one of the better media around (imho).

small follow up, i will now change the make of discs i use. but im wondering, with the backup dvds ive already made, if i was to just copy the files off those backup dvds and then put them onto the better dvd-r's, will the files be alright? i am assuming they will cos the error seems to only be with the playback and not the actual data itself. but i ask cos im not certain.

If it plays fine on your computer then putting them on better media should work fine if your player plays them at all.

Definitely copy them now. Waiting a few months you may not be able to.
DVDD is also the best ripper out there imo and will usually handle problem discs. Since the files are already compressed you can use it to rip and burn.
