does the brand of the DVD-R matter? Because I know how to create image files, and burn them, but I don't know what kind of DVD-R brand to buy, or is it all you need is to burn it at 2x (recommended by this thread) and a modchip will do fine?

A Modchip
A DVD Burner
Some GOOD MEDIA (Ritek G04/G05, Verbatim, TDK, Maxell etc.)
And you should burn at 1x or 2x. Personally, I burn at 1x but if that doesen't work I move up the way, 2x, 3x, 4x, etc. until it works. After 4x I give up and assume the Image is corrupt.

Good media is media that is known to be reputable. You can buy the media online at meritline.com, supermediastore.com, etc... or at a store such as Best Buy or Circuit City. The best media to buy is that which s manufactured by Taiyo Yuden or Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation. MCC DVDs are frequently sold under the name Verbatim. You really can't go wrong with those disks. You can also try Fujifilm as long as it says MADE IN JAPAN. The one which are MADE IN JAPAN are manufactured by Taiyo Yuden whic is really good. If it says Fujifilm Made in Taiwan on the disk, do not buy it.

Actually it might work. Some people have luck with cheap, and usually bad media because it is simply a combo with their burner that works. I however recommend Taiyo Yuden and MCC because they are known to work consistently well. You can try HP media, and if it works for you, you might save some money over the TY and MCC media, although they dont cost that much in the first place.

1st of all I dunno why this is on User sumitted guides??? is this a guide???? :P so why dont you ask the mods to move it, About the media you need to buy:
www.nomorecoasters.com
On this page you will find a list of media manufacturers and their grade of quality, for good PS2 Backups, I recommend the most popular Verbatims DVD-R, or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R (www.supermediastore), Fuji DVD+R (Remember made in japan), dont get HP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they are made by CMC mag, you backups will be horrible and unredeable after a year or two, DONT GET HP, you will loose your investment, also dont buy weird store branded media or dynex media, at maximium buy some Smartbuy media (Prodisc the one that does the fuji disc that say made in Taiwan) Ive tested this media and has worked very well on my PS2 backups, Conclusion: Go and buy Some verbatim, Sony, Tdk and DONT BUY HP!!!!!!!! GL :p

hehehe, then how did you find the "user guides section",
anyways, thats history, and welcome to the AD forums,
as stated, the chioce of media you use is vital to acheive 100 % successful burns, using poor quality disk's is asking for trouble, and burn them at no more then x 4,
the modchip is the best route to go down
verbatims, maxwell,TY'S are said to be one of the best,
i personally at the minute,am using riDisc's purples, with a max speed limit of X 4,they have the ritek go4 dye
