1) I have a 4x HP burner that I normally buy TDK 4x DVD+R discs that work great, and burn at 4x in nero.

All the new DVD's seem to be all 8x and up now. I just bought a 50 pack of 8X that said it supported (8x/4x/2x). Well, I put the DVD in and the max it will let me burn on is 2X!

I don't get this. This happened to me the last time I bought 8X, because I didn't read the box that said it only does 8X. This time I bought ones that said 8x/4x/2x and everything below, and still, only burns at 2x!

Why aren't compaines making these supported at 4x speeds anymore? I only have a few TDK's left, and they work on 4x speeds.

Would uprading the burner firmware fix this or is it the media that's doing it?

HELP!

Ok 1st we need to know what media are you using, brand, etc, your problem lies that some brands does are not recognized propertly by your burner because your burner probbably does not have the info and write strategies for this brand, upgrading your firmware will probbably help alot maybe adding new brands to your drive database and maybe this problem can be solved, by now plz provide us with the following information and try updating your firmware, Tell me how you do :P

Ok, I'm a little new at this, but here is the media that isn't working.

The new media that isn't working is:

HP dvd+r 8x
1x/2.4x/4x/8x

It says the above on each disc and will only burn at 2.4x in my 4x burner.

My HP burner is a HP DVD Writer 300n. I've never updated this, it came with my pc that is a year old. Any help would be appreciate. I'm going to return these soon if I can't get it to burn at 4x. I hope you can help.

Good idea dont buy more HP media they are really bad media made by CMC mag, worst disc manufacturer of the world (apart from those honkong disc) I recommend you to buy Fuji DVD+R media (made in japan by Taiyo Yuden company) or Some verbatim DVD+R, both of them are really good options, also upgrade your firmware this will help ALOT, adding more macnufacturer ID to your burner, so it can detect them and write accordingly, so learn a lesson, DONT BUY HP MEDIA!!! not DVD+R DVD-R CD-R or anything their disc quality is the really really bad. Hmm, interesting.

1) So, how was the TDK 4x I was using? That always worked great for me.

2)Where is the best place to update my firmware? Can it do any negative things buy updating?

3) If the newer media out there says 8X only, this you can't burn it in a 4x burner, correcT?

Well Tdk disc are classified as 1st class media so you should be ok with them. firmware upgrades can do no harm to your drive only update it to correct errors and add write strategies for other medias, although if you flash it the wrong way it can harm your drive (but its ok intructions are provided and flashing it is very easy), yes newer media at 8x should burn at 4x, Ive bough lots of media that are 8x and even 16x and they all burn at 4x.

You can find a firmware for your drive in this pag http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

Thanks for all your help, really.

I just looked and my hp 300n has firmware 3.11 on it now.

New firmware is here:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1598

Now, last question, there is no instruction with the file. Care to share the best way to do it without destroying my drive?

Ok:

If the file is an executable that your run from windows do this:

1. Disable DMA on the drive (Device manager, Secondary Ide channel, Pio only)

2. Uninstall any Packet writing software (Roxio Drag-To disc, Nero In cd)

3. Unistall Intel Ultra Ata driver if you have it.

These are the most common recomendations for firmware upgrades, I dont think The Ultra ata causes much problems but unstal it for safety.

GL ;)

Ok, thanks. I found the update from the official HP site. It seems to be the same one, but check out these install instructions.

What's up with the record now?

Also, do I really need to uninstall Nero?

I update my firmware on a regular basis and NEVER un-install or disable anything. Never have had any problems doing it that way. If you have a windows based up-date program, provided by the manufacturer, just run it and do what the program tells you to do.

There is no point in over complicating an otherwise SIMPLE process.

Quote:
Description
The upgrade includes the following features:

* Laser write strategies added for new 8x DVD+R media manufacturers.
o The firmware update will NOT allow the DVD300 drive to write at 8x speeds. The DVD300's maximum recording speed is 4x no matter what recordable DVD media is used.
* Improved drive calibration.

Before Running the Update:
The RecordNow software included on the DVD300 installation disc must be installed for the firmware update to operate successfully. Install RecordNow before running this update.
========================================

From the looks of things, there was an installation disk that came with the burner unit. If you don't have it, you can more than likely download the program from HP. Look around the site and see if you can find the software support page for your burner. I bet you can down load that disk or at least those files that you need to run.

From reading what they say about the upgraded firmware, it WILL solve your 8X media compatibility problems. Go For It!

Ok, DONE.

I downloaded and installed the firmware update. I didn't uninstall Nero, I have too much stuff on Nero and don't have my serial anymore.

Well, it now works are lets me burn at 4x! 14min to burn one dvd, just like before. I guess I got lucky that all this worked!

Thanks again!

Thought you should know that your 300n drive is no longer supported and that firmware is the last update available. I've had it for quite a while now as I was having issues like you. But then I ran into more issues and decided I was tired of having an unsupported burner and decided to replace it. Maybe you should think of doing the same in the near future. Dual format drives(+/-) are getting cheaper and cheaper.
Good luck with what you have.....

Thanks. Well, after I we from 3.11 to 3.20, now I can burn at 4x with the 8x media. Are you saying after you updated yours to 3.20 you couldn't? or that you never updated it and that's why you had all the issues.

It's seems to be working great now. Just burned an audio cd, 6 min, and two more dvd's 14 min a piece.

I think he is trying to inform you that you have a very old unsupported burner that you should think into buying a better dual format (that burns DVD-R and DVD+R) in the future, that you may have OTHER issues in the future so maybe you should think about buying another burner. ;)

@zyppid: I hope I was right ;)

Yes I did go to 3.20 and I did have problems. Maxell disc to be exact. I was about to run out of my Ritek Ridata DVD+R 4X disc(ID GO3)which the burner would only burn a 2.4X and so I picked up the Maxell DVD+R at the local retail store. I had previously used the 4X maxell without issues and the ID was RICOHJPN RO1, but these were rated 1-8X and the ID was MAXELL something or other and this burner didn't like them at all. So I bought a new liteon dual layer for about $80(US). It didn't like them much either as it would only recognize them as 6X and 8X. I got away with the 6X burns but 8X burns would not play at all. So I ordered a new stack of Ritek GO4 and am having great luck.
Basically my point is that with that burner, you will run into more issues as newer ID codes arise on newer blank media. Without any updates in firmware(which there won't be any more for your drive), your drive won't be able to handle them properly and will give you alot of grief. Start tucking away a bit of money here and there and you'll have enough for a decent drive in no time, because as I've said, quality drives are getting cheaper and cheaper......
