Hey,

I have the MAGNAVOX MRV640 DVD RECORDER and I recorded some DVD+R with it. I finalised them and they play on other DVD players. But when I play them on my computer, wich has 2 DVD players, it won't play. It looks like the computer doesn't see any disk. It usually plays both +R and -R DVDs. I would like to be able to read the recoded DVDs on my computer so I could copy the content and edit it. Anyone has an idea why I can't read them on my computer? It also seems like when my computer tries to read them, it erases the DVDs... They won't play anymore afterwards, even with the MAGNAVOX MRV640 DVD RECORDER. I very often watch DVDs on my computer and I don't have problems. I am not even sure if the problem is the DVD recorder or the computer.

I think this may be in the wrong forum but I doubt your computer is erasing the discs. A DVD +R is not eraseable. You sure it's not a DVD RW disc? Sounds like this may be another one of them there media deals. 99% of the time when problems like this come up, it's usually related to cheap/low quality media being used.

Yes before burning the media on your DVD, Download DVD identifier (google it) and tell us what media manufacturer ID has the disk your using for your burns

I use MAXELL DVD+R. Is it too cheap? Should I get DVD+RW instead? After I tried to read the DVD on the computer, when I play it on the DVD recorder, it is blank.

Good morning, octobre26.
Sorry I cannot offer any assistance regarding your particular situation, but I am a newbie too and I'm still learning here myself.
But I thought I'd mention that I also used that Maxell 8x dvd+r media, and I had excellent results with it using my Plextor 716A burner. I burned at 4x speed to try to obtain a better quality burn. I assume I did the correct thing, as all went well and the dvd plays quite good. But I'll know for certain when I try it in numerous players.
I tried that Maxell because of Plextor's recommendation about what type of media the 716A likes. I am brand new to burning, so I am still learning here but I thought I mention the Maxell and the results I've had with it in case it helps you a bit.
Take care; good luck. Excellent forum here, by the way... Some very nice folks have helped me a few times now, and I'm so delighted that I found this forum.

@octobre26 - As per paztelu, pls let us know the media code. DVD+R are once only writable discs, so i suspect you're either not quite following the instructions for burning to the letter, or you're more likely using a re-writable, and not 'finalizing' the disc on your recorder or something, thus the computer thinks it's blank, or not 'quite right'.

plus maxell are generally very good quality discs

when i first started, i used maxell dvd +r and had crappy luck. some dvds would not play in regular dvd players, some would play find in the laptop but not standalone dvd players, some were choppy and froze up....
find a link for good media info.
only thing made in taiwan worth using is verbatim discs. other than that, only buy media that specifically says on the package 'made in japan'
seems like made in japan and singapore are the two decent sources for blank dvds.
besides verbatim, anything from taiwan seems to be crappy media.
i went to walmart for an emergency stash of blank dvd +r last week while waiting for a 100 pk of verbs to arrive, and found a 25 pack of maxell made in japan, no problems. but most of the maxell dvd there were made in taiwan.
i think creaky has some links in his sig regarding blank dvd info

@jer911tx: That myth was long forgotten, taiwan=bad japan=bad, these rule may apply to some specific brands (like Fujifilm -R and +R) but it does not go further than that, although some companies in taiwan really suck, some do really good disk, so I think you should follow other guidlines to find good media. GL :)

That's an excellent point that I forgot to mention.
Luckily, those Maxell's that I bought online from Staple's are made in Japan. I took a gamble when I ordered them, but it worked out to be a good choice for me.
I haven't tried Verbs or TY yet, but those will be my next choice as I've read some good comments about them.
I sure don't want to bud into the original poster's thread; hope he doesn't mind me answering here.... my apologies octobre26, as this is your thread. Take care.

my desktop liteon is pretty picky with media, didn't like tdk or maxell (both were made in taiwan) but the verbatim seem to work fine (also made in taiwan).
i dug through all of the dvd media threads i could find, and from what senior members and mods were posting, the overall general impression i have is if it is made in japan, it is probably good media (not CMC mag) and if it is made in taiwan, it is most likely bad (CMC Mag), unless it is Verbatim, which is only made in Taiwan now, but still very good media (MCC-003))

that may not be accurate, but it is the impression i have, which explains my problems with tdk and maxells from taiwan...maxell from japan (via walmart) seem to be much better than the taiwan maxells i tried before.

now i just look for a good deal on 100 packs of verbatim and stick with them.

Don't worry about posting here, it helps me ;-) I am still wondering what is the problem with my DVD+R. My DVD drivers on the PC work fine and the DVD recorder seems to be working fine as well, I mean the other DVD player can read the DVDs I recorded from the recorder.

Don't be offended by this question, but do you have a DVD software program on your PC like PowerDVD, DirectDVD? Have you ever played a DVD movie on your PC before? DVD decoders are not standard issue with Windows. Your PC's DVD burner can read practically anything (except DVD-RAM) which includes all +/- formats including rewritables. It just can't write to all formats. I have PowerDVD, and I can even view DVDs by clicking just a VOB file.

@octobre26 - in addition to DogBomb's question, pls download dvdinfopro (free) and run that disc thru it's media info check (2nd icon from top left in dvdinfo). This is due to that dvd indentifier output not giving us enough to go on.

right, so this disc is once-writable, so..... without labouring the point i wonder if something is going wrong creating the disc on the magnavox

What happens is that I record something on a DVD with the MAGNAVOX recorder, I finalise the DVD and when I play the DVD in my PC, the driver can't read it (but I can play it on another DVD player). It's as if the DVD is empty, but it's not.

did you try playing it with a couple of different media players? (windvd, windows media, realplayer, etc)
have you flashed the burner to get the latest firmware?

i've had a couple of tdk and maxell burns not play in my bedroom dvd player (won't read them at all) but they play fine in the living room dvd player.

if you don't have any other brand of media right now, you could try to burn another copy and try that new burn, or get a different brand of blank dvd and try those.

sounds like a media problem to me, but i still don't know that much, myself. most important thing i've learned is
when in doubt,
verbs you must try out

(i'm a creaky verb convert)

usually burn with laptop: dell, XP SP1, P4 2.66ghz, 384mb RAM, HL-DT-ST DVD +RW GCA-4040N burner

desktop: dell, Win 98, P3 800mhz, 512mb RAM, Lite-On 1673 burner, cheapo DVD-Rom drive

media i am currently using: verbatim - MCC-003

Is this a disk that you have recorded only one program on or used several times to record and then finalized. Because with a DVD Recorder it optimizes the disk each time it records, if you go through this optimization process too many times it can render the disk impossible to play in some formats even though finalized :~)

How can I play it with a medi player if the PC can't even reconise it? I may have recorded a few times before finalising it. So I will try recording once and finalise it immediately. You think it might be the problem?

Cheers

Well in my own experience Ive known picky DVD-ROM drives (like the one in my laptop) that only prefer an special kind of media example my laptop DVD-ROM does not play: Princo, Fake TY'S (LOL!!), Imation -R(Fujifilm coded), but it does play Optodisc and ritek, I think you may have a picky DVD-ROM drive, so try using the verbs that as kivory has stated in many posts they have "fairy" properties that make them reabable in every player...JK lol...but try using some verbs or TY's and your disc will probbably work, although the problem that arniebear stated could also be the one troubling your PC DVD-ROM drive...GL :) ;) :'(
