Well, here is something I believe is going to come up quite a bit more often:

It started out when I was trying to copy the DVD movie, "Hitch." I was reading all the threads about the latest versions of DVD Decrypter, AnyDVD, and DVD Shrink, and managed to use decypter to get the copy protected files onto my hard drive. Only thing is, decrypter does not remove all the copy protection when it copied it to my hard drive, so no matter what I used next, I kept getting cylclic redundancy errors like several others have been reporting. Except in my situation, the files were now on my hard drive, not the DVD disc. Continuing to struggle with backing up this DVD, it seemed as if the problem file on the Hitch DVD was, "VTS_01_1.VOB." All the other files copied just fine.

Everytime I tried to use any copying program such as Nero or DVD Shrink to read the files on my hard drive I kept getting a BSoD. There is something in the file "VTS_01_1.VOB" such that when the file system starts reading the drive sectors, it goes into the cyclic redundancy error, and eventually gives the BSoD system stop error, DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, and it was relating the error to my SCSIPORT.SYS system file. At this point the problem was not a major one because if I just re-booted, my system came up just fine, so it seemed to be a problem only when my NTFS file system was trying to read that file.

Well, I ended up finding a different way to make the back-up copy thanks to the another thread; i.e., I eliminated the unnecessary audio files using DVD Shrink.

So then I decided to delete the folder on my hard drive that contained the "Hitch" DVD files. This was a mistake. During the file deletion process, big trouble started when I got another BSoD! Only now, I can't re-boot, because XP keeps giving me the same stop error during boot-up!. It makes perfect sense: the Sony ARccOS? copy protection on the DVD that causes the cyclic redundancy error wasn't going to allow my NTFS to delete the file, since it couldn't be read or tracked across the storage sectors on my drive. This spelled big trouble for my system since my system crashed while trying to read that file. Each time I re-boot, my system tries to re-access that "recent" file and another BSoD occurs. Luckily, the DVD files were not on my main OS drive volume, so all I had to do was disconnect the drive that contained the "Hitch" DVD files and I am up and running now. However, all my back-up files with important information are on the drive that contained the DVD files.

If this had been my main OS drive, my system would have been trashed... thanks Sony. Take caution so this doesn't happen to you.

I am now using SpinRite to try and recover the small number of sectors where the file existed on the drive but, it is having a very hard time with it and is taking an incredibly long time for each sector (if I let it run 24/7, it appears it is going to take about 27 days to finish, and thats if I narrow the recovery analysis down to only the scrambled sectors).

Interesting. I have done several movies with Arcos and had no problems. For Hitch I ran AnyDVD in the background while ripping to my HDD with Decrypter. I then ran those files thru RB/CCE taking out only the foreign audio and subtitles. Came out perfect at 4.33g with perfect quality and all extras.

Never heard of that, ripped severals problem discs b4
rip just the movie with DDVD.
shrink with DVD Shrink and burn with DDVD or Nero.
The error is Sony copy protection..(anydvd also helps as long as you have the latest version)

You might want to read the threads on RB/CCE(DvdRebuilder and CCE Basic). The absolute best back up app there is, period. Compression ratios of 50% and more are hard to distinguish from the original. Does the entire DVD with extras, you only need take out foreign audio if you wish, which it does automatically once set up.

Dvd Rebuilder and the other proggys needed are free. CCE basic cost 58.00. There is also now a Rockas installer that makes setup so much easier, it use to be a little intimidating, for beginners especially.

Ask anyone that uses it and there won't be one person that won't agree it is the absolute best DVD software on the market today. BTW, it's getting ready to be sold instead of free, so now is the time to get it.

That's exactly the way I did it too. But the latest version of DVDD doesn't quite remove all the little bugers that Sony has employed. That's why many folks are getting the cyclic redundancy error.

Yep, I ended up using DVD Shrink and just eliminating everything but the main movie title. Another thread explained that there was a bunch of unassociated audio files that are just garbage files; I left those out.

What was strange is that if I played the movie from the files on my hard drive, no problems. But If I copied or processed the files using something like Nero Recode2 or other compressor, I crashed every time. My first thought was I had some bad sectors on my hard drive that the movie was occupying, but the thing is, I was getting the same error when copying from the DVD (until I used DVDD, which uses a different method of reading and writting files).

Shrink has always had a cyclic redunancy error problem on certain videos and encryptions. It's the nature of the beast. I also did Hitch with Intervideo's DvdCopy 3 and CloneDVD 2 because others were having problems with it. Though quality wasn't as good as RB/CCE(DvdCopy 3 was close) they all 3 played fine and 2 of 3 looked great!

I believe if you had tried another software you might not have had your problems. BTW, I tried Nero's Recode and it hung up on it too. Recode and Shrink are very closely related, and they work almost exactly the same except Nero won't rip and Shrink won't burn. In fact Mr. Shrink now works for Nero. I don't think the fact neither would work on Hitch is a coincidence.

Hey bigorange, thanks for the tips on those two progs. It seems worthwhile to buy the basic of CCE. Do you have a link?

Actually, Recode was the second program I tried. The first was DVDXCopy Platinum w/ripper (4.0.3.8). After Recode, I tried CloneDVD2 and got a similar error.

I am not sure what version of DVD Shrink you are using but 3.2.0.15 definitely burns DVDs; and I use Nero to rip all the time (well, technically not a ripper, I use it with either with DVD43 or AnyDVD running in the systray to allow Nero to rip). Am I on the same page? If not, keep in mind I tend to read back to front most of the time. (heh, all the answers are in the back of the book anywho, eh?)

Sorry, but there is no version of Shrink that burns and no version of Nero that rips. If you'll check you'll see you probably have Shrink to auto-burn with Nero. Look under edit > preferences > file I/O and you'll see an option called "enable burn with Nero".

You can also look in your window that appears after you hit backup and you'll see under the 1st drop down menu options for burning with Decrypter, Copy to Dvd, or to your HDD folder. No where will you see an option that says burn with Shrink, because-ta da, it can't. Trust me, I've been doing this a looong time. ;>)

Oh BTW, here's a link for CCE. Do not get the trial version, it's worthless. It will only do 3 minutes and leaves a watermark. You'll have to trust us on this one and make the plunge for 58.00, I promise you won't regret it.

I can see no way that the corrupted files on the DVD could mess up your hard drive. The stop error you were getting sounds like a drive access problem which typically happens when there is something wrong with the connection to the hard drive.

CRC errors are not going to stop you deleting a file. Your problem is elsewhere.

@EricMo - i think that's the same BSOD error i was getting when my Windows 2000 got hosed one time. I couldn't get the machine to ever boot past it. Reformatting and reinstalling from scratch a few times didn't work as it turned out the hard drive was no good. Swapped in another hard drive and reinstalled , no more problems.

Plus this is not caused by Arccos, you can blame them for a lot of things but not this one!. Nice try though!!

:)

Just a note:

I use AnyDVD along with Recode2, doing "Movie Only" for my burns for quite some time now. Hitch locks using Recode2 when you try and access the title. I had to go back to DVD Decrypter, doing it in file mode and then using Recode2 movie only with the files saved on my HDD.

I used Decrypter and then used RB/CCE. With no editing except foreign audio and subtitles, entire DVD came out perfect with no noticeable difference from the original.
