How many times do I have to turn that "knob" before I find the right combination? I've done this procedure several times and it really doesn't make the ps2 read discs any better. It's actually worse. So any insight would be help. TIA

Not had any experience myself but you should just try it at every notch. http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars

The thing about that is, it's incredibly tedious. You can't just move it one notch and then put the disc on it and hope it plays. You have to put the cover back on the drive. Repeating all those steps could kill you. The instructions make it seem simple and straight forward but it's really a disaster. That guide has to be updated with warnings.
