Assuming you are using XP, unistall your Bus Master IDE Controller.
When it's done mine takes a litle while), reboot the system. The system will reinstall at the highest DMA setting supported by your device.

Should be the entry just above your primary IDE channel.

I had a similar problem not too long ago with the secondary IDE channel. After a while the only option I had left was to change the IDE cables for newer/better quality ones. Once I'd done this both channles then stayed in UDMA mode for good. Just MHO

Hello. I am having the same problem and ran across the link below:
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm
However, I am not computer savy enough to expedite all of the steps outlined. So, I am following this thread hoping it will help me also.

go in there and uninstall primary ide and secondary ide. U will be asked to reboot and when u do the drives will reinstall themselves when u log in and then they both should be back to normal. Worked for me.

Check your bios to see if DMA is enabled. And what have you got connected to that channel? Have these DMA setting always been like this or is this just recent?

On a clone computer, reboot and hit delete during power on sequence. If you have a dell or compaq, you'll have to check your reference materials for access to the bios.

Frankly, I'm out of ideas. Could be the device connected to that channel, could be the cable. May even be XP itself, if the info in that michna.com page is correct. Every time my systems have dialed back to PIO, reinstalling the controller has always restored DMA. If you can get another similar device, try taking out the existing device and installing the new one. If you get DMA, you'll at least know it's the original device.

Now that I think about it though. I think it was microsoft service pack 2 that messed it up. I installed it through a cd and not an update so I cant just delete it. Which means the only way to get service pack 1 or professional back would be to install them through cd and it will delete everything on this drive which is something that I really dont want at all!
So hopefully we can figure out how to chang it because I dont want to reinstall XP(dlete my stuff

try another way to get DMA sorted....
Run REGEDIT. Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. You have to go through these subkeys and check the DriverDesc value until you find the proper IDE channel.
Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.
Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, congratulations, you've made it (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA).
