Hey,
I'm new here, and I've been have some trouble backing up my DVDs. It looks like you guys know your stuff, so I figured I'd sign up.

Ok, here's what I've been doing.
1. I put my DVD in (using Legacy DVD-R's btw, an unknown brand to me)
2. Open DVD Shrink.
3. Get it on the computer using the option "ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decryptor."
4. That finishes and then DVD Decrpytor opens.
5. I go through all that stuff, and it starts to burn.
6. Actually, burns for a while, steadily.

And then I got this error. Here is the DVD Decryptor log of what happened. Possibly any of you can make some sense of it. Is it a problem with the media I'm using. I haven't used any other brand so I couldn't tell you if anything else works for me, I just recently started trying to back up my discs. Decryptor log:

Seems as though your burner probably doesn't like the media you're using. Have you tried a different brand and type?

I concur. Legacy is not known to be quality media. Use this free proggy http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ to identify the manufacturer and report back with the manufacturer and ID. Try updating your firmware. Looks like the most rescent is TS10 and yours is TS05. There's been many updates since yours. Look here. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1911

Try use Decrypter all the way, and lower burn speed (e.g.2-4x).

Hey, thanks for your replies!

This is the stuff from DVD Identifier:

Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:GSC003]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [GigaStorage Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [GSC003]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Can you go more into into how I install this firmware? It's suprisingly new to me. Would I need to mount this .bin file onto my drive. I've only been familiar with .bin files when they have a .cue file with them. Thanks for your help.

You need to download both the firmware (TS10) and the flash utility program listed at the end of the first line. Use the flash utility program to "flash" the firmware to your burner.

I started getting a similar error last week, E 07:29:31 Failed to Write Sectors 1024992 - 1025023 - Invalid Address For Write. And clicking retry is useless. I'm using a Pionner dual layer burner and the same Sony -R discs I've been using for a while. Any suggestions? Is it an update I need?

Sorry and no offense, but I've never heard of those media before. Perhaps, you should try with other high quality medias as suggested by some of the above members, then try to back up again and see what's the result. I would say Fuji 8X DVD+R, MAXELL 8X DVD+R and SONY 8X DVD+R are some of the top quality in the market now-a-days.

Just a note: make sure it says "made in Japan" on the blank disc.

I just installed a NEC ND3520 which shuld handle + and - R. I used DVDDecryptor, DVD2One to compress, and am trying Nero to burn. I put a Memorex DVD+R in, and it says I'm using the wrong media, that I need to use -R. I don't know anything about all this, I thought I could use either and it would know what to do. I know I could just go and purchase some -R discs, but shouldn't I be able to use the +R blanks I already have? Help!!!

I have the same drive as you (installed about a month ago) and I used a +RW when I first started (only had 1) to make sure I was doing things right. After my 1st burn, I have only used -R because I bought 2 50-packs (Maxell) on sale. I have not updated my firmware and probably won't as long as it works as it does now, but I know the drive is supposed to burn +/-. This may not have helped you any, but I was able to burn a +RW.

@dave614 - i can't answer why your drive will (at the moment) only recognise one format, BUT i will direct you to the second link in my signature, then maybe the first, as Memorex don't supply quality media, and 'media' isn't even what i'd call them :)

Buy some decent discs when you sort the problem, otherwise you'll be throwing good money away

I guess I came to the right place. Is there a brand of discs that a consensus of you "burners" recommends? Also, since I did not yet purchase Nero, does the "demo" only do -R? If that's the case, please accept my apologies for wasting everyone's time and feel free to give me a sound virtual beating. Otherwise how will I learn?

you're not wasting anyone's time, it's a good excuse to spread the word that Memorex is not for dvd burners but for dustbins :)

Nice drive you got there, i'd buy one if only NEC would stand still for 5mins and stop churning out new models.

Demo version of Nero as far as i'm aware won't be - or + specific.

I personally recommend Verbatim datalifeplus, the - or + format decision i'll leave to you, or for others to recommend; i'm a -R man myself, but only cus that's what i started out with & have the most of.

Let the Memorex take the beating, instead of you as they deserve it :)

no need to apologize dave, we all start somewhere...all i can recommend to you for a much better start on "burning" is: Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim~ use either of those 2 and you will be off to a great start~ :)

the ONLY real solid consensus here is that Memorex (CMC MAG)= crap...the other members have their own preferences and i know some agree while some disagree with my own choice of media too~ some media works better for a particular person's setup, while others do not...but, i think it's pretty safe to say that very few people will disagree with me suggesting to you either TY or Verbs~ :) good luck

@dave614

You will find that the the consensus on disks is toward Taiyo Yuden, which for the large part is available through online dealers

http://www.supermediastore.com
http://www.meritline.com
http://www.rima.com

Verbatim are top quality and they can be purchased retail, along with Sony, Fuji, and Maxell. As for Nero, as far as I know, it burns whatever disk you give it, if your burner does both +/- R then use whatever. If your burner booktypes then use the +R as they really are a better format, -R is more widely accepted by standalones, especially older ones, but booktyping takes care of that.

slow typing is cool, it means you got to answering the - or + format thing, i hate answering that as it's something that just annoys me. There being 2 different formats annoys me and describing it too :)

there are just some people that annoy me :) (nobody in THIS thread)

i agree w/ arniebear on the formats...i use mainly dvd+r only because my drives can easily booktype the dvd+r to dvd-rom. this has given me personally the best in compatibility in my picky stand alone players, so i just stick with what works~ :)

I wish that there really was just one format, it would make everything easier. The +R is a much better media, yet some standalones just don't like it. I managed now to have three burner that will booktype so this is no longer a problem for me, however I still have a lot of -R media, and my Panasonic DVD recorder will only record on -R, so I still have to use the format :~)

Just read this in a news article, may affect Verbs
Quote:
A severe drought in Thailand has forced two polycarbonate (PC) factories run by Bayer and Mitsubishi Chemical to reduce output 20-25% due to insufficient water supply, according to sources at Taiwan optical disc key component vendors.

If the drought continues until mid-July, Bayer and Mitsubishi are likely to temporarily stop PC production at their Thai factories, the sources pointed out. A supply shortage will seriously hit Taiwan?s of optical disc manufactures because the third quarter is traditionally the peak sales period, the source indicated.
