i'm planning on buying an hp dvd burner with lightscribe to solve the paper label playback issues.question:will it burn as well as a regular dvd burner?and will the media be any good? i'm assuming that i will have to go with discs that are specifically for lightscribe. has anyone used lightscribe before?

AS to the quality of the drive- Having owned two HP-CD burners I think you should be okay ! I realise that CD & DVD are different from each other but HP makes good stuff ! have'nt used lightscribe yet but here's my take on the situation ! It's a good Idea but it's propriatery - meaning yes you have to use special media ( LIGHTSCIBE) dvd's or cd's and they are expensive compared to regular - non lightscribe disc . I think the concept is a good idea but I will wait for the price of media to come down for lightscribe use first! Yamaha had a similar technology that was called disc tattoo except they spelled it discT@Tu or something ! it was similiar to lightscrible and you could do it with regular media but on the readable side of your disc - which looked cool but also took up space ont he disc that you would record on limiting the size of your recording not a good idea in reality ! So you pays your money and takes your chances ! When the price of media comes down (LIGHTSCRIBE) and more companies make drives with it (HP & BENQ) only do now I will strongly consider the option - till then my friend it's a sharpie pen ! hope I was able to help ! peace & happy burning

I bought the WalMart special 89.00 HP 640C Lightscribe burner, and it has performed very well. Have not had one coaster using Maxell, Ty, Fuji, TDK and Sony. I used the lightscribe disk that came with the burner and the etching came out good, if not a little light. The disks for these are still a little pricey, so for now I am sticking with Sharpies, they come in all colors. For the money this is not a bad drive. My two cents :~)

Have no problems with Hp just the cost of lightscribe media so like yourself it's sharpie time for me too ! from whatI've read about lightscribe you can record over the lightscribe or label side of the media not having a lightscribe drive yet could'nt say if you reburned your label it would come out darker but you could try that if you were feeling experimental? anyhow Peace & happy burning

My pc totally crapped out last friday, went through 2 powersupplies and 1 gig of ram and decided to ditch it and buy the HP a1118x-b package.

ddp, you know the pc I am talking about. Total piece of crap.

This came with the hp 640c with the firmware version cs30. Compatability is a key issue for me.The compatability on stand alones looks close to my benq's so far,but i've just gotten 2 coasters out of 20 burns this week. The first was on a crappy c-mag the day I bought it. Last nights coaster was a full hub printable Maxell Hitachi 002.It also coastered 1 out of 2 doing an on the fly copy. My old pc had 0 coasters on about 400 on the fly backups.

My normal backups burn start on the inner dye about 2 mms or so and end 1 mm from the outer edge. This coaster started burning at about 4.5 mms from the inner edge of the dye.It crapped out halfway through the disc. This burner is leaving me a little skeptical because I only had 1 legitimate burn coaster this year.Majority of the few coasters I had were from the piece of crap pc with the blue screen of death and black screens. That issue is solved with this new hp system.

I was just wandering how you guys/gals were doing with your hp 640c,what codes of media it doesn't like or any other info you may want to share.
Light scribe is a nice feature, but not a major concern for me.I do love my full hub printable backups. I can easily replace that burner with my original benq 1620.1500+ burns and still going strong.

I re-did that full hub printable copy with a verbatim +8x, coded mcc-003 and it turned out great.

At the moment I am having no problems with my HP 640c, have used basically all the good media on it and burned at 8x on TY and Verbatim and quality came out good and disks played on my standalone. Have not tried a dual layer with it yet, have done those on the Plextor.

I haven't tried the dual layer yet in any of my burners. Still a little pricey, but gradually coming down.

Yeah, the price is coming down slowly, I ordered some Ritek dual layer from supermediastore they were 4.50 a disk, and have burned fine and worked on all my standalones.

Well looks like my hp lightscribe will be pulled tomorrow. I just tried re-ripping one of the hp backups, that was burned on a sony yuden000-t02 at 4x, using my backup pc with the benq 1620 and no dice with either DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink. It couldn't even rip it.
I've still got my original benq 1620 licking it's chops waiting to be put into my new machine.

Your firmware is different than mine. Mine reads ES04 downloaded from HP and rpc lists ES04.

Just checked this article and it states that you can upgrade to ES04, this may help.

I was considering buying a lightscribe. I would like to see the finished product first. None of the stores in my area do a demo. Is this a similiar etch to older TouchStone discs? The reason asking is, I have been buying dvds for over 5 years, recently I watched "Enemy of the State" which was purchase new probably 4 years ago. It froze and pixilated, never had before. Upon inspection there wasn't a scratch, fingerprint. I put the disc through DVDInfoPro, came up with 48 errors. I buffed the "TOP" side with fiberglass boat wax, and still came up with a few errors.

This alone would make me think twice about the technology, if in fact it is the same.

Arniebear,

Interesting article, discs lasting 9 mos, time factor. I'll stick to marking with my Staedtler permanent cd/dvd pen. I find Sharpies have a lot of alcohol or something in it. You can smell it, Staedtlers don't.

I just use Sharpies, so far have not seen any of the articles complaining about using them. They are cheap enough and come in all kinds of colors. It would take a lot to eat through the top of the disks, they have both a lacquer and polymer coating.

arniebear,

Just articles I read long ago, how true they were/are, I don't know. Here are 2 just searching the web.

#1. We've all been through CD/CD-R compatibility issues. DVD has all of the same issues. CD-Rs use several different dye substrates as the recording medium; colorless (Pthalocyanine) reveals the gold or silver reflective surface. The other dyes are green or blue-green (Cyanine) and blue (Azo). Use only genuine CD-marking pens to write on the surface. Any alcohol-based pens (like Sharpies) can eat the reflective layer right off of the CD. Certified CD-marking pens are available at most computer or office supply stores.

#2. The item which concerns me was your advocacy that we use Sharpie? markers to label our CD-Rs. There is a modest amount of anecdotal evidence that the use of solvent-based ink markers (Sharpies use an alcohol-based ink), particularly on CD-R/RWs without a protective coating and CD-R/RWs kept in a warm to hot environment can lead to long-term penetration of the ink to the data layer with resulting damage to the data.

My thoughts: Dvd discs are so inexpensive now, can just redo. For the price of a Staedtler, I'd rather be on the safe side. Staedtlers do come in different colors, they are not labeled cd/dvd, but I do think they are the same.
