Has anyone been able to boot backups with cheat codes using an original CB V9 and SM V36?

These are the steps I follow:

1. Boot CB V9
2. Select Codes.
3. Select "Start Game"
4. Eject Tray (either auto or manually), take out CB V9 and put in SM V36, Press Eject to load tray back in.
5. Press X to boot SM V36.
6. Swap with Backup.
7. Press X or Square.
8. Done.

The problem for me comes during step 5. When I press the x button to boot up the SM V36 disk, the disk just keeps spinning and all I get is a black screen. I never get chance to do step 6. Does anyone else have this problem? And if so, have you been able to fix this and how?

Thanks In Advance!

Nevermind, I found the solution to my problem.

It was the HDD I had in my ps2. Without it, the sequence worked fine. With it in the ps2, no go.
