not sure why you ask but is ritek-g05 the only media Iv'e used since I had a compatibility issue(stand-alonesnot likingmedia) with two out of a five pack of sony dvd-r's
just bought the pc in feb' 05 never had probs (knock on wood) do you recomend the firmware update recognizes -r/rw,+r/rw,&dl
I've heard that this is risky a lot of post saying back up hd first and what not so have not considered reading more I guess my thinking is if it's not broke don't break it (which is a talent of mine)I am not sure how to but will bow to the knowledge of the fore-fathers

Up to date firmware is essential. All you have to do is make sure apply the correct firmware and don't reset or power off stuff when you do firmware upgrades.

just for a change there was a readme for this firmware, you'd be surprised how few firmware have any info -
Quote:
Original RPC-2 Firmware version BYS3 for the SONY DVD RW DW-D22A

Flash in Windows using "LtnFW"

If the drive is not detected after a misflash, then flash in DOS with mtkflash (1.69 or higher)
Use this command: "mtkflash # w /b BYS3.bin"
Where # is replaced by one of the following numbers:
1 - Primary Master
2 - Primary Slave
3 - Secondary Master
4 - Secondary Slave

If using mtkflash 1.80.1, then do not include the "/b" flag. Use this command: "mtkflash # w BYS3.bin"
- to read up on "LtnFW", see here - http://dhc014.rpc1.org/howto.htm

- that's very similar to the util i used to update firmware on my Sony.
