just crappy dye/disc manufacturing techniques they utilize, they like to "keep costs down" so they "cut corners" in producing their discs, THAT is why CMC MAG is so bad...when you cut corners to turn a profit in business, it's the end users/consumers that get hit the worst~ :)
because CMC MAG standards are much lower than other GOOD manufacturers such as MCC (Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp), what "passes" their tests are of a much lower grade to what would pass with MCC or Taiyo Yuden~ (who by the way have MUCH higher standards before they will sell to the consumer, what would be considered "A-Grade" by CMC wouldn't even pass a grade B or C by MCC or TY standards by comparison)
so, bottom line, you buy a inconsistent/lower quality disc at the stores and because of the poor dye forumlation/creating process, your backups will suffer with the normal symptoms caused by poor media; ie: pixillation, skipping, freezing, greenish color hues to your picture, etc.etc. or worse case scenario, won't even play back at all~
hope that explains it~ :)
stick with the good stuff and you dont' have to worry about it, TY and Verbs for life~ :)

OMG i don't believe it!! - not a CMC thread; ..luckily kivory666 has described it with far more restraint and detail than myself :)
Original poster pls form an orderly queue at the 2nd link in my signature, then maybe pop in to the 1st link.
I detest crap media and the nonstop hassle it causes so much that i felt the need to have a tribute thread to crap media such as CMC you see :)

CMC is such a large distributor, the problem is that whatever media the are associated with is always cheap and crappy. I really believe this must have something to do with profits. Cheap labor, cheap product, high profit. My two cents :~)

snippet - they already love using CMC media -
HP DVD+R 2.4x (CMC MAG.R01)
HP DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
HP DVD+R 4x (MCC.....002)
HP DVD+R 8x (CMC MAG.E01)
HP DVD+RW 4x (PHILIPS-041-000)
The only things i've read about HP and dvd media, up to now, is to avoid them..

HEE HAWWW...is that the sound a donkey makes? yeah..i think this thread gonna get tired REAL soon, not much else anyone else can really say, unless someone actually comes to the defense of CMC MAG...then they will get flamed outta here faster than a lit firecracker~ :)
@mort...it's not even july 4th here yet, i plan on using my CMC MAG coasters to make a small mountain and blow them up w/ my M-80s~ see how much schrapnel (sp?) gets embedded into the surrounding walls and trees :)

When I first bought my DVD Burner I bought a 50 Pack of the Memorex CMC. Not knowing how bad they "supposedly" are I burned a bunch of movies. It's now a year and a half later and all of them still work fine with no pixelation, greenish hue or skipping on my 61". Everyone says they are horrible but I personally have never had any problems.

macburner- Just run a disc quality scan or a K-Probe on a CMC vs a TY02 or MCC. The error rate is 100's of times higher in CMC's. Even on "good" scans.
kivory666- I've always skipped HP blanks as well. Maybe they'll contract out to TY or MCC now that a MAN is CEO. LOL. Mark Hurd was hired a couple month's back after Carly Fiorina was forced out at HP.

bout time they forced her out~!! i really hope they take a new trend in that direction to have TY or MCC manufacturer HP discs, but, i wouldn't count on it~ :P regardless of the CEO now~ :)
@mort
thanks, i was close, but, i spelled it how i would say it phoentically~ hahaha...my spelling has been deteriorating lately, probably due to natural aging~ :P or the fact that CMC MAG has caused me such an affliction whenever i speak about them~ LOL
turns me instantly retarded~ hehe
@joe33333
i wish you the best of luck w/ your memorex CMC MAGs, i agree w/ both mort and creaky as you are one of the LUCKY few that have had such success w/ substandard media:) it's YOUR money, so, in the future if they don't play, don't say we didn't tell ya so~ :P
