Are you sure there is no problem with the disk, like scratched, or needs cleaning, because I had no problems burning it with Shrink, and Decrypter, and that was yesterday.

You don't have 8GB's free on your harddrive, or there abouts? I'm guessing you have the latest version AnyDVD, correct? I think you need to spell out more info about your problem.

Sorry, can't help out more,

Rich

i only use DVD Shrink , and sometimes DVD Decrypter, both of which take up virtually no space. Plus Hostage has not funny new protections on it.

My Computer has 9 gigs free, and when i rip the movie it's like 6.1 gig and then when i try to compress it it says that I only have 3 gigs left and not enough to shrink it. And i've tried DVD43 and it crashes my compter. so with AnyDVD I've tried CloneDVD2, DVD-Cloner, 1ClickDVDCopy, and DVD X Copy Plat. and every time I get an error. Either VOB... encrypted or just a generic error on the programs that don't tell you exactly what the problem is.

a-ha, that's gonna be a problem, you need more space, one lot of space to rip movie to disc, and another load of space to shrink to..

creaky,

Just out of curiosity, how much space is required for Shrink/Decrypter to backup a 8-9GB DVD? I thought it was about the size of the source DVD, or actually, whatever size you indicate to Shrink, which should be about 4.5GB for single layer output?

TIA,

Rich

depends what you end up needing to do. worst case you'd need decrypter to drag off the entire 9GB DVD to hard drive, then 4odd gig to Shrink from there, so yup

OK, you guys have been talking about backing up Hostage. Well I have backed up every single one of my movies and all of them have worked. Now I just got Hostage, and everything acts like its fine, burn complete and everyhting, but when I go to play it, even on both my computers and my dvd player it doesnt read it, it says its a blank dvd. I am using the same dvds I have use on all my others and the same burn process. I use DVD Decrypter to Decrypted it, then Shrink to Encode it, then Decrpyter to Burn it. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so can someone tell me how to get around it?

that's nothing to do with Hostage.

download dvdinfopro (free) from www.dvdinfopro.com and run the disc thru it's media info check, pasting the details here. Then glance at the 2nd link in my signature just in case your media appears in my tribute to bad media thread.

@fenix623 - pls do the dvdinfopro media info check and paste the results here. Also, download Nero info-tool from here - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/neroinfo.html

click on the drive tab, note down the exact drive name and the firmware version. Here's what mine shows -

What is the deal with Hitch, Hostage, House of Flying Daggers, and a few more? Using the latest versions of Shrink and Decrypter and sometimes DVD43 (which I actually NEVER shutdown anyway) and Recode2, I have backed up all of these and not had a SINGLE issue with CSS or ARcCOS or playback..... Thank God for TY's and Verbs!!!!

Hey Creaky,

I have Nero, I have tried burning it both ways, decrypter and shrink with Nero, but I will post what the program says when I get home from work.

dvdinfopro, i misread your post, i thought you meant you had Nero Buring Rom, in which case a logfile would have been excellent; saying that Nero info-tool has a great detailed log if you click on the save icon and copy/paste it here, just beware it's a long logfile, but we could try that after the dvdinfo check

trying to rule out the blank media used as most posts i get involved in (lots) are down to bad media in the main, plus usually a few setup problems

bad media is one of my fave subjects, but only because of the amount of people it affects. Not saying you have definitely got bad media but you wouldn't believe how bad, bad media can be. Have a look at the 2nd link in my signature, then the 1st link, for examples of how using many 100s (literally) of the same type of iffy media does not guarantee consistent results or successful burning.

in fact i just remembered, i did explain a similar thing to someone last night - snippet from http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/205136 -
Quote:
i really don't wanna seem like a scratched record ( i know i do ), but Sony's love Verbatim. You see i don't have media problems, Period. Which gives me oodles of time to prowl the forums helping with media problems :)
And believe me i have not a lot of money to spend each month, but absolutely refuse to waste money on media that causes so many problems. I did that already and won't make the same mistakes again. I have to look at god knows how many 100s of the disgusting BulkPaq discs with their bright Orange fronts, every time i go looking for a movie to watch (shudders uncontrollably)

I may be a "tad" off topic, but the little things that the senior members and addicts have us troubleshoot/read up on up front are absolutely necessary and save loads of time. Case in point:

I am still new at backing up DVD's myself. I was trying to backup a brand new DVD yesterday and DVD43 started getting errors. Tried Decrypter and it would only rip until about 75% through the movie. The movie was only 4.13GB, so I didn't fool with Shrink. New encryption?

I have been reading all that I can regarding backing up DVD's in these forums... I was about to uninstall and reinstall DVD43 and Decrypter, when I remembered seeing something about cleaning DVD's even if they look pristine. That didn't work either.

Maybe it is just a bad disc. Pop it back in the computer and the menu comes up no prob... Pop it in my standalone and the menu comes up with no prob again! I am thinking, "Here I go with a thread about not being able to copy" (see my post in this thread from yesterday. Talk about eating humble pie!!!). I figured I may as well watch the movie since I couldn't back it up right now. I hit Play on the menu and I get a blank screen, then it goes right back to the Main Menu. Hit Play again and the same thing. Ditto when I tried the same after putting it back in my computer.

This just goes to show that the little things that we take for granted HAVE to be addressed first. Had I not gone through all of those steps, I would have been posting logs and uninstalling/downloading/installing proggy's today and tying up members that could have been helping someone with a more serious issue. I know that when we have problems, no matter how trivial, it is our main concern. Just listen to these guys when they tell us to do all these seemingly unimportant things before we start deciphering logs and adjusting registry entries and settings!!!

Officially off my soapbox now...

@teflonmyk - nicely put. (i'll ignore the phrase 'off-topic' as i am notorious for veering off at tangents and have to try extra hard not to veer off now i've seen the phrase!). i've been working with computers for a long time and troubleshooting is the thing i've done the most/prefer the most (as opposed to just learning new things i mean). Anyway, to this day you wouldn't believe how many times i miss the obvious things. You tell yourself, nah, it can't be something so simple, blah blah blah, yet you can guarantee it's usually the most basic thing that's the root cause of problems.
Hence why i always start at the bottom with the basics, it's just common sense really.
