Alright, I've been reading through the forums extensively because it seems a lot of people ask questions like this (and plus I don't want to waste people's time w/ repeated questions), but the answers are all different. Or they're not exactly what I'm looking for.
So, my question is this. I've modded my PS2 recently to play my backups (I... either misplaced or lost about 6 of my games after moving, so that prompted this). Is it possible to use a Gameshark or Action Replay to use cheats on my backup games? I keep hearing different things: some say you can't, some say you can and give this huge list of steps. Is there a simple way to do it? Or does it have to be the long exhaustive way (and which of those is the easiest? I don't have, or plan on getting a fliptop). Help is appreciated.

As far as i know, it's impossible to use an Action replay 2 or gameshark cheat system with backups of games. (and believe me, i've tried)

Hmm, if neither of those two, anything else? I know there's a ton of different programs out there aside from GS and AR

The problem probably lies with the backups, not the cheat systems. i've got codebreaker, action replay and gameshark, and none of them work on backups.

the answer is yes you can
and there is about a 4 step process to doing it. and you will need another free program called DVDLoader which you can get here
http://members.cox.net/candrid2/index.html see this guide for how to do it
http://minnwild.8.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=246 I use to do it with my Swap Magic 2.0, have not tried it with the newer versions. Now i have a mod chip in one of my PS2's so when i want to use cheats i just play on that one because there are no extra steps, back ups work just like originals.

Ok, so that's peachy keen, fine and dandy, but i don't have a fliptop or a slidecard...Guess that means no cheating on backups for me then..at least for now.... :(

Mm, I remember seeing a thread somewhere that taught you how to make a slidecard out of an old card you don't need (be it credit card, or otherwise). I think it was a sticky in the PS2 hardware boot forum.
On another note... what do you guys recommend: GS, AR Max (what's the dif w/ the evo version?), or codebreaker?
Two other things... 1) I need Swap Magic too? (does this have to be an original?), and 2) what exactly does it mean when it says high TOC original? Meaning I can't used a backup version of anything right?
*sigh* So much trouble to cheat.

or you could try and back up your gameshark/AR or download one. burnt copies usually work fine on my burnt games.

Ar Evo is just the newer version of the max, i'd personally go for either the AR or codebreaker (if you have to choose 1 that is, otherwise i'd get both if i where you :D )

then you should have no problem with cheats. That is if you have a decent mod chip. Mine plays back ups with cheats just like using an original.
I just put in AR Max, then choose the game in expert mode, choose start with codes, then stick in the back up. loads right up with codes.

Mine doesn't steimy, then again, i've got like two of the earliest ps2's, and my modchips are really old as well...perhaps it would be time for some newer chips then...

Hi, I got a problem, maybe you guys can help.
I've got a modchipped PS2, and every time I try to update codes for my ARMAX, it crashes after the updates are finished downloading and ready to save.
Anybody had this problem?

Also, it's probably worth mentioning that when I pop the ARMAX into my PC, it says that it has bad sectors. Is the disc physically damaged?

I had the same problem with my first ar max disc, i suggest you return it to the store where you got it, and explain the problem, they'll probably give you another copy. (unless of course you've had the thing for ages, then it might be a problem.)

I download my updated codes directley onto a usb storage device/pen drive, then swap the data from that to mem card through the ps2 with a replay, delete the old codes first, works perfect for me,a/replay downloads section,if this isn't already the way your doing it,it may be worth ago.

Hmm, Datel said that all versions before 3.14 have issues with newer PS2s. I'm thinking about just getting a new ARMAX from EB, they're having a sale.

That's probably because you have a new(er) modchip than some of us, cause some older modchips won't work with ar max and gameshark when playing backups. i had to have my NTSC remodded with a new chip to get it to play backups while using cheats.

I have a PS2 Version 7 SCPH-39001 and both AR MAX and Gameshark WORKS PERFECTLY! With my old PS2 system version 9,I had to do the memory card trick with AR MAX. I hated it! Sometimes it works other times it put me through h#ll. But with my v7 it loads up with not problem!
AR max & Gameshark:
1. I put the Cheat disc in and chose my codes.
2. when it asks for the game disk, I put SwapMagic 3.6 in and press X.
3. After SwapMagic is done loading, I put the Backup game in and press X.
It just works! No Problems! I heard that the old AR MAX v3.14 had issues with the new models v9 and up.
