How come when add files to burn on a list the files are bigger?

I am trying to burn 3 MPEG files that are around 700MB each. I know this for a fact.

Error I am getting

Your project currently exceeds the capacity of a DVD, but still fits onto a DVD-9 media to record your project on.

Do you want to have the porject quality reduced automatically so that your project will fit into the available space?
If you click no the project will be expanded to DVD-9

Each of the files were less than 700MB so why are they coming up as more than 1GB each? I clicked no so it would fit each file into 1GB with 3GB altogether. So then it says that the quality was automatically reduced to long play (3382kbps)

Is this suppose to happen?

It sounds like you're using Nero. You had to click yes for it to automatically go down to long play. You can also customize the size. Did you add chapters to the files? Adding chapters will add some space to it but not enough for it to go up as much as you say. Even though the files may be around 700 MB, the extra space includes the size of the file and the amount of space needed to make the video.

One way to save on space is to use DivxToDVD and then DVD Shrink to burn.

the best way to do this,is to carry on and convert to dvd 9,but put in a folder first,and not burn straight to disk.
then shrink the file down to fit on a dvd5
this way at least you will use all of the capacity of the dvd 5,instead of the 3 gb worth you would have used.(which would have been a lesser quality),although, i didnt know you could customise the size with Nero??
