I currently use a plextor px-716A. For software im running dvdshrink and nero. For some reason it takes me 30-40 minutes to rip a DVD while my friend ripped the same dvd in about 15 minutes. any clue on how to make my burner rip faster?

Did you check to see if your in the dma or pio mode? The 716 can connect as high as Ultra DMA4. Most dvds rip in about 10-11 minutes with my 716

No problem, open Control Panel, click System, Hardware, Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Now you must select primary or secondary IDE channel to locate your 716, it's probably in the secondary. When you locate it select Advanced Settings. Now look at the transfer mode, you want it to say DMA not PIO

I don't think there is anything in PlexTools. I see a dvd read speed but it's always been grayed out. Do you always get slow rip speeds or just this disc?

I got slow rip speeds with my old plextor the px-708a also.. but i figured it was just the burner. as we speek im backing up a movie and its a single layer dvd its 20% done encoding with 30 minutes left.. My pc is a p4 3.2 with a gig of ddr 400 ram.. gonna swap out my IDE cable and see if that helps.. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. thanks again

When your ripping the dvd aren't you using your dvd-rom drive and not your burner? If thats the case then you probably need a new faster dvd-rom drive

Jaspers right, dvd burners do rip alot slower than a straight dvd-raom drive. If you want faster rips buy another dvd-rom drive.

Is there a way for decrypter to automatically compress like DVD Shrink does? I played around with DVD Decrypter and it rips at full speed unlike DVD Shrink.. is there a way to fix DVD Shrink also? please let me know

Did you once rip at faster speeds? have you had many write errors etc? I had this issue once with my Plextor 708A, I had a fair amount of write errors and then my rip speeds in DVDecryptor dropped to 1.5-2X speed. I don't know if you have same issue I had but I found a forum somewhere after searching on net for some time. What happened with mine after a certain amount of errors or write failures my drive sorta reverted to a safe mode, not exactly sure what its called, but there was a way to fix it and another way was to uninstall drivers and reinstall again. I resinstalled drivers and it cleared up and i was back to ripping at up to 8X speed again (same DVD that was slow before). If I can find link to the forum I read, if still active, I will post later.

Edit: I must have been typing this as you asked last question doesnt look like it same issue.

apic are you saying with Decrypter your 716 rips at full speed but with Shrink it's much slower? If thats the case why don't you always rip with Decrypter first then go to Shrink after?

I could do that.. i didnt play around with dycrpyter until i came on this and started this forum. To give a time frame, one movie i ripped on DVD Shrink took 34 minutes to rip and that was without any compression.that same movie with dvd dycrypter took about 9-10 minutes. Is there a way to set up DVD Dycrypter to compress the dvd like DVD Shrink does?

I have found it best to rip with DVD Decrypter first before going to DVD Shrink. DVD Decrypter is much better at removing the copy protection than DVD Shrink is. I learned the hard way that shrink can fail to remove it (or at least place dummy sectors in when necessary)and you will end up with a coaster.
