Hi people! I'm new to the forums but not entirely new to the backup world. Here's my dilemma. I have a Sony Vaio notebook (PCG-R505JS) which has a docking station for CD-RW/DVD-ROM but the drive won't read my backup DVD+R movie. It played on my regular DVD player but its weird that it won't play on my notebook with DVD-ROM.
Am I missing anything here? Do I need to download anything for it to recognize my DVD+R media? I have Directx 9.0 installed but it shouldn't be the problem. Other than that, it reads CD-R and CD-RW.
Help would be great. Thanks all!
Brand: Sony VAIO (PCG-R505JS)
Slim dock station: DVD-ROM/CD-RW (PCGA-DSM5)

Its me again. Sorry for not replying fast, I was at work the whole day. Well I'm back and I tested CD-R, DVD-R and regular DVDs and they all worked just fine. The only problem is reading DVD+R which I'm not sure why. Anyways, I just did what you told me and installed dvdinfopro on my notebook.
It looks like it doesn't read DVD+R cause its unchecked. Is reading the DVD+R on this type of drive still possible? Thanks.

looks like your drive is a matshita ujda710; looks there's only one newer version of firmware for this drive, version 1.51 (can't find where to download it though), but it's 3yrs old and it's probably unlikely that applying 1.51 would cater for reading +R discs. So you might well be unable to read any +R format discs i'm afraid..

That sucks cause I've been copying DVDs using DVD+R for a while (or at least 50 of them). I was planning on watching those DVDs on my notebook in college, or whatever. I'll probably be buying DVD-R from now on and stick to that. Thanks for the effort. I appreciate it.

menaced,
I need to know the make and model of the dvdrw drive (as stated by creaky, not all dvdrw's are capable of bitsetting/booktyping) you are useing to burn the dvd+r's(eg. lite-on 1633, benq 1620) not the brand of media.

yup, what we need to establish is if your DVD burner can do 'bitsetting' ie if it can 'book type' the +R disc to dvd-rom format, thus makeing the disc appear to be a standard dvd-rom, hence it would work in in dvd-rom drive, whereas +R discs won't

I'll be checking out those links you posted soon. If not, then I'll just have to live with it or switch to DVD-R from now on. Thanks for the effort though. Your help is much appreciated.
