hi all. newbie just downloaded dvdd and need help with basic functions. for now, i want to copy some dvds to hard drive for direct playback, not to burn to dvdr. what is the procedure to do so? ie what selections need to be made for mode, etc. i tried a couple ways, but either got unrecognized files(iso), multiple vob files(file), or just one file (ifo). How can i create a duplicate copy with similar playback function? ie open file see dvd menu, select chapter, play, etc. Thanks so much for any help, I know this is a simple basic question, but no true understanding of file types and no help available any longer from lightning.

Garry,

Just rip the dvd to your hdd w/ dvdd in file mode. Then you can play it back like a normal dvd from your hdd w/ a media player such as windvd6 or powerdvd6 (must be vs 6 or higher, lower vs won't play back complete video folder, only individual folders). I recommend windvd7 http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/WinDVD_Profile.jsp It has a free 21 day trial period.

thanks. i have powerdvd 5.0 on my computer now, is there an easy (free?) way to upgrade, or just purchase the 6.0 version?

No free upgrade to 6.0 that I know of. I have 5.0 too and couldn't find a free upgrade so opted for windvd6 (now widvd7) instead. Intervideo windvd is a better media player than powerdvd IMHO.

thanks again. my windows player seems to give me a functional menu screen. now, is there any way to have the file saved as a wmp type file instead of a powerdvd file? in other words, can i make it so that i can simply click on the file and have wmp open it instead of powerdvd?

Not that I know of.

You can instruct wmp to be the default player for that file type with my computer/(selct drive)/properties/autoplay tab/select content type/click;select action to perform/choose player/apply

thanks sky, but the procedure doesn't work for the hard drive. However, your response sparked an idea. I just had to go to my control panels and add the VOB file type and select wmp to open all VOB type files. Works like a charm. Now I just have to double click the VOB file with the dvd menu and it all functions from there like a regular dvd player straight from my hard drive. Perfect. Thanks to both of you for your help. Afterdawn rocks. Computing is now far less frustrating knowing that this community exists.

hi

or rip in iso mode with DVD Decrypter then load to a virtual drive like Nero or deamon tools or alochol has one i think? it makes it think its dvd in a drive, but its an iso really...also handy keeping the iso as you may want to burn it some day? albeit compressed to fit a dvdr that is...

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

If I put it on the hard drive using file mode, can I still use dvdd to prep it for burning to dvdr later? Probably a stupid question, but I'm clueless. Thanks.
To clarify- It is on the hard drive now, decrypted in file mode, that works fine for playback, but will I be able to go straight from hard drive copy to burning dvdr without the original dvd is the question...

hi

yes you can burn it but not in files mode from DVD Decrypter it only uses iso to burn!

but you can use Nero to burn files!!!

also just ripping it isnt enough to burn it, it may need compressing to fit a dvdr5 size first then burn it!!!

dvd shrink will compress it and can output in files! or iso!

folder2iso can make the files an iso for you! but files must be in a VIDEO_TS folder and have a second folder called AUDIO_TS and both of those placed in a another folder called anything you wish! then it will iso the video/audio/files in one hit! but dont forget the compression to fit dvdr5 size!

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I have downloaded shrink, so from what you're saying, it sounds like I can keep the files on my hard drive, and when I'm ready, use shrink to compress them and output them in iso, ready to burn to dvdr, is that correct?
