I have come across an xbox that has had no modding done to it and the HDD is fried in it. I want to mod the xbox but I don't really know where to begin(never modded anything!). I have another xbox(unmodded). From what I have read on this site and others the HDD is linked to the the xbox that it came out of. I don't want to invest anything in repairing it if I don't have to. Do I need to have it operating before I can mod it? Can I somehow use my other xbox to help mod the broken one? My working xbox is v1.0 and the broken one is unknown(don't physically have it yet). PLEASE HELP!

You are going to have to mod that Xbox in order to get it working again. Every Xbox motherboard is married to the HD and has a special lock key. So if you put in a different HD the Xbox would generate an error 5 or 6 on the t.v. screen everytime you booted it up.

Now, if you throw in a mod chip, you will be abe to add in a new HD w/out having a problem.

I would suggest getting an Xecuter 3 chip, mainly because it is the best chip out there and it has great support behind it.

There are three main steps you must do when installing a chip,

1) Install the mod chip
2) Flash the chip
3) Load on a dashboard

thanks for the reply, but just so that I am clear on this, once I install the modchip, I can use my HD from my other xbox as if it were the original HD and procede to upgrade to a new(and larger) HD?
