about the only thing I can think of is media issues. Could be resolved by firmware updates. I ran into this issue with CD-Rs (mainly the black ones) where some CD players would read it and some wouldn't.

Thanks for your tip.
Can you indicate some site or step by step for a firmware
update? I am new on this subject.
I am confused by all this.

firmware is what tells your burner what media it can and can't burn and at what speeds. If new media comes out and your firmware doesn't include it, you may not be able to use it.

You said it no longer plays your burned DVDs... That means to me that at one time it could play them. Can you still play the DVDs that you were able to play before?

Sorry for the mistake, my laptop plays DVD but whenever I make a
back up DVD from any original DVD it doesnot recognizes the media.
The back up is done in my desktop, and the backup DVD plays
well in my desktop PC as well as in my stand alone DVD.
My laptop has a combo DVD CD and it doen not record, but I thought
I could watch movies. What is wrong? Or What should I do to watch
movies on my laptop?
Thanks for the fast reply and help.

That can't be good. Unless your copies are deteriorating rapidly I would say something is not quite right with your drive. You may want to get it checked or serviced. What this means is is that you get another one. They are getting so cheap that it is just not worth fixing.
Have you been putting labels on your copies? That can cause problems as well.

I think at this point you should replace your +R only burner. New quality burners can be found for less than $50.00 now.

A spindle of these Taiyo Yuden discs would work very well in this new burner.

Getting burners to read the same discs they burn has always been hit or miss. These things are made to burn. That is what the manufacturers concentrate on. I don't have a problem with it because I read with my ROMs and vary rarely to I need to copy a copy.
Do you have room in your PC for a DVD ROM? You really should be using one if at all possible. It saves wear and tear on your burner.
Is your burner a Toshiba?

I dont know if this has any connection but about a month ago my dvd drive disapeared, I did a system restore to a point the day before and it reappeared. I am pretty sure that this is the first time that I have tied to play a copied dvd since the restore

In order to really be able to tell if your drive "disappearing" had anything to do with this issue, we'd have to find out exactly why your drive disappeared.
I think fasfrank is right about the burners being manufactured for burning more than reading. Poor quality media can be burned to but not read later on for instance. TYs shouldn't give you any problems at all and I would also recommend getting a reader drive.

if you have the money to spend I'd recommend getting a dvd reader and using that to read the discs. I got mine for like $30.
Right-click on My Computer and select Properties. Then hit the hardware tab and select Device Manager. Hit the + symbol next to CD/DVD drives and find your burner. Is there a ? or a ! next to it? Right click on the burner drive and choose Uninstall or Delete. Let it uninstall it and restart your computer. Windows should see the drive and install it properly again.

i too recommend a 2nd optical drive. I myself have a CD burner/DVD reader combo drive which does ALL my CD burning and movie ripping. saves me wearing out my dvd burner and is just more flexible having 2 drives

plus i only buy a drive if there is region-free firmware for it, just one less hassle to worry about then.
